Melbourne car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users
Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Melbourne
For the amount of money we paid for 4 days the car was very poor with shock absorbers banging and the rear dent was unable to be seen as backed up against the barrier so unaware the back door was also broken. Also no toll way beeper to be aware how many you have to pay for on return. Make sure you check car thoroughly before driving off.

Airport pickup may cost a bit more but is definitely convenient

Don’t get sucked in like I did. It says Melbourne Airport but isn’t. It’s actually off site which was very annoying and time consuming. State it’s off site on your web page and because of this I won’t use them again.

other than being on the opposite side of the road, it was easy driving and the traffic isn't bad. Public transport is really easy and often faster than driving. We rented because we had to go far out of town where public transport wasn't possible.

Generally easy and do keep to speed limits :)

Opening an account with Linkt is important otherwise the admin charges on the tollways just add up too much.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Melbourne
For travelers with flights to Melbourne, you may find yourself landing at Melbourne Airport, Essendon Airport, or Avalon Airport. Luckily for would-be car renters, all three airports feature on-site rental counters. For Melbourne Airport, the rental car center is found on the ground floor of the airport in Terminal T123’s parking garage. In Essendon Airport and Avalon Airport, visitors can find the rental counters in the respective main terminal buildings.
No trip to Australia is complete without a few road trips. Fortunately for travelers renting a car in Melbourne, many of Australia’s wonders are within a short drive of the city. Some of the top spots to visit include Yarra Valley and its wonderful wineries, and Phillip Island, where you will find some of Australia’s most famous animals such as koalas, wallabies, and even penguins.
Drivers new to Melbourne should be aware of the city’s rush hour traffic jams, which run from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. However, even though congestion can be quite severe in Melbourne during those times, some smart navigation and route planning can help to mitigate the situation. For instance, it pays to avoid Punt Road and Princes Street in the central downtown area during rush hour.
Besides driving on the left side of the road, drivers in Melbourne should keep their eyes open for trams and, in particular, Melbourne’s famed hook turns. Hook turns are right turns that are made in the left lane because a tram is also crossing the intersection. Signage will be posted to indicate to drivers when hook turns are present and where to turn.

FAQs about renting a car in Melbourne
What type of car is recommended for driving in Melbourne?
While Melbourne may not have as narrow of streets as you would see in many European cities, the roads can still be a bit compact compared to roads in the U.S. Thus, travelers renting cars would be best off sticking to a compact or smaller vehicle, especially when taking streetside parallel parking into consideration.
What’s the speed limit in Melbourne?
Speed limits in Melbourne, and in the state of Victoria in general, run between 40 km/h (25 mph) and 50 km/h (31 mph) on city roads, 100 km/h (62 mph) on rural roads and 110 km/h (68 mph) on highways and motorways.
Where are the best places to park in Melbourne?
Streetside parking in greater Melbourne is fairly available but, once you get into the central business district, parking can become fairly scarce. Because of this, it is highly recommended that drivers park in one of the many parking garages dispersed across Melbourne CBD. Drivers should note that if you plan on doing a bit of shopping while you are downtown, you can often validate your parking ticket in a nearby store to earn a parking ticket refund.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Melbourne?
On average a rental car in Melbourne costs C$ 53 per day.
Can I rent an automatic car in Melbourne?
Yes, automatic cars are available in most car renting companies in Melbourne. As cars with manual transmission are more common in many countries, you might have to pay an additional charge for renting an automatic car.

Great all round Only thing to improve would be the car at the airport itself 😁
i came about 10 minutes before the pick up time but they said they cancell it because they don’t have my (phone number). i was really disappointed what in the world a person making a booking without giving any detail. location is atThrifty, footscray, Victoria. the cuctomer service was very unproffesional, and it looks like they have done it very frquently to their customers even if you we have a booking confirmation code. it was on the 23/12/2024.

pickup people were great. Location was a bit out of the way but easily reachable on public transport. My huge problem is that we returned the car about 90 minutes over a 24 hour period so they charged us an extra day of rental (at half price) which I was ok with. What I was NOT ok with is that they also charged (full price) and additional day of ALL the fees--insurance, tax, one way drop off, administration recovery, Vehicle rego recovery, credit card surcharge and prepaid tolls. All these additional fees were over $100 extra. I was not told at either pickup or return that these fees were charged daily. When I contacted them they would not refund ANY of these fees, not even a 50% reduction. I had a rental from Hertz during the same vacation and picked up the car a day early and was only charged ONE day of all those fees (for a 4 day rental) I will NEVER EVER rent from Thrifty again--it was highway robbery how much they charged and now I have to get the credit card company involved and it's wasting a lot of my time. For approximately $100 they would have been able to have a reasonably satisfied customer, but they sure don't now!
I booked this company specifically because it was listed as “Terminal” pick up. I showed up at the counter, and they told me there would be a ~600AUD additional charge to pick up at the Terminal. Otherwise I had to get a shuttle bus to the off-Terminal site. I was travelling with my wife, large bike box, 3 suitcases and we booked the Terminal pick up so we didn’t have to worry about anything fitting or not fitting in the shuttle van. Had to waste at least 2 hours waiting for the shuttle and driving to the pick up for the pickup and return. The price we paid reflected Terminal pick up/drop off. Customer service lady clearly skipped customer service onboarding and had the attitude of “not my problem” even when I showed the Kayak confirmation email said Terminal. Because her system said a different location, of course she was right and the customer was wrong. Would not book again. I still don’t understand how in 2025 the car rental industry is still a mess and usually a terrible experience.

Supplier choice
False and misleading advertising ! Marketed and sold as “in terminal” pickup but then involved shuttle bus and walk from drop off point to collect the car. Extremely dissatisfied. Result was late for high level meeting.☹️

There is a small price difference between what kayak quoted and actually paid. Looks like a "value added tax" of 10%

Terrible, why say pick up at the airport then send you off-site to collect the car. I specifically booked airport pickup because I travelled with an 11 week, 2 big suitcases and a baby capsule set.

Europcar has many locations, one at the terminal buildings and one off site accessed by a shuttle service. The 2 do not match up. Firstly Kayak website clearly advertised the car as ‘terminal buildings’ when in actual fact after booking and paying and luckily checking my email says south centre road - the offsite location. Europcar (terminals) were terrible to deal with they just wanted me to hire a car twice as expensive. He also told me to call the shuttle ( which they are supposed to do I was told) so I called Europcar at Sth centre Rd. They were better to deal with overall and the shuttle was prompt and the sky park driver was lovely. Be aware before booking! If you were looking for a quick pickup at the terminal because it is NOT the case with Kayak.
Avis were great. Unfortunately the Kayak booking app gave us an incorrect pick up address. It took several trams and plenty of walking to finally find the correct place.

Not told about an $800 bond that had to be paid before you could collect car. Person who delivered car was friendly but overworked as no else assisting during long weekend and office premises were not welcoming….
