Pros:The resort is beautiful and in a beautiful location.
Cons:After finally being fully vaccinated and finding a few days off work to get away, my boyfriend and I chose Viva Wyndham because it looked beautiful and we felt confidence in seeing the Wyndham name attached. It turns out, while the resort does look like the beautiful pictures and is along a gorgeous beach, that is the only positive thing I have to say about it. I have never wanted to come home from a vacation so badly in my life. I tried so hard to find the silver lining, but ultimately, I feel like every penny I spent on this trip was completely wasted. This will be a long review for such a short stay, but unfortunately there was just so much wrong that it will take time to list everything. I’m not sure why there was so much wrong at this resort. At times, I wondered if they had a problem with gay couples which is why we were ignored or denied service at times, but I also read other reviews from around the same time with some of the similar experiences we had as well. My best guess is that it is a combination of discrimination, incompetency, poor management, and lack of concern. Bullet Points for those who don’t want to read it all: -Spent the entire weekend waiting in lines -The staff was rude and unhelpful beyond belief -Rooms will not be as described and something will be wrong. You will also wait in line to get that fixed Check-in: Check-in was a chaotic, inefficient disaster. It took us over an hour to get to the desk. We were not offered water, drinks, snacks, or even the reassurance that we would be helped. One person stopped after we had waited about 40 minutes, I believe she was from guest services, but I’m not sure. She asked the last name on the reservation and had us write it on a napkin in her hand. I’m still not sure what was done with that or what the purpose was, although I honestly wonder if it was to flag us or to let other members of her team know they had a gay couple so they wouldn’t worry about offering us any type of services. There were at times 4 people working at the desk, and sometimes they would all disappear at the same time. While we were waiting to check-in there were also guests forming another line at the same counter, I’m guessing for things like room lockouts and recreation equipment. Once we finally made it to the desk, very little was said. The woman helping us was also helping the other people getting sports equipment. She put a few papers down and pens, which we assumed meant we should fill out the forms as she walked away to help the other people. After a few other forms and giving our passports, she handed us an envelope with keys and towel cards and put a photocopied map in front of us. She turned it over and highlighted when dinner times were and also highlighted the snack bar times and said they were open now. We were starving by this point after 13 hours of travel and only having time for a muffin and coffee in the morning. She called a bellhop to take us to our room (which we really didn’t need since there was only 1 suitcase). I’m not sure what the point was in showing us to our room if you aren’t going to check the room and ensure everything is good, other than to collect a tip (which I don’t mind giving, I just wish service came with it). The Room: When making our reservation, the options were a King bed or 2 queen beds. We chose the King bed, but I did see where there is a disclaimer that bed choice is not guaranteed. When we walked in the room, we were surprised to find neither. There was a queen bed in the front corner against the window (which makes it awkward for 2 people to get in and out of as one person has to crawl to the bottom of the bed anytime they need to get up) and a twin bed next to it. I was confused, because this was never an option. It just felt like we already weren’t getting what we paid for. The first thing we noticed was that the air did not work. It wasn’t that it wasn’t cold enough, there was literally no air coming out of the vent. There are also no fans in the room and the windows are bolted shut so the room is just stuffy and hot. There was a half drank bottle of water on the nightstand which concerned me about whether the room was cleaned or sanitized. When traveling internationally, I always put my passport in the safe first thing. That’s when I discovered the safe didn’t work. It would say it was locked, but it wasn’t. I decided to quickly call the front desk before we went to find some food. There are no indications of how to reach anyone at guest services, the front desk, or anything else on the phone or in the room. I tried dialing 0 and someone answered. I explained the issues as clearly as I could. Nothing was said and the phone started ringing again, so I assumed I was being transferred. It continued to ring until I gave up. At this point, we’re hot and extremely hungry and not ready to wait in another hour long line at the front desk, so we decide to find the snack bar and then head back to

Pros:The location, the beach and views were beautiful.
Cons:Overall experience: overrated with hints of tackiness and unpleasant surprises. In other words, for the price, don't expect quality. You truly get what you pay for but with a twist in DR all-inclusive. The only way to make this better is to pay for a place that offers what I'm paying for. Had I known what all inclusive meant ahead of time at Viva Wyndham, I would've gone elsewhere. The ride from the airport to the resort alone -- about 1 hr 20 min -- is heart breaking: glaring poverty, with non stop shanty towns with an inordinate amount of abandoned contructions, dilapidated buildings and folks running through the highway. The Dominican Travel Industry shields the tourists from blatant poverty with gated resorts. The theme is the same: the food sucks, it's prepared ahead time and sits there, it gets dry, one can taste it isn't fresh, the constant loud parties and music, the infrastructure doesn't account for humid heat causing structural problems to facilities the locals cannot afford to control; bringing appliances voltage to funtion at below optimal levels making foodstuffs rotten, rooms to overheat or freeze, causing food poisoning, mold/mildew allergies, backed up sewage, unpleasant smells, insect infestations and excess algae ashore. The poverty and overdependecy on tourism makes the poor come out of the pueblos and become vendors, inundating the beaches with incessant offers for stuff one wouldn't buy. The timeshare hounds who wat you to commit one week a year to the Viva Wyndham Chain, are they crazy? To note, the resort is visited by folks from western and eastern Europe and tons of south Americans from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, etc. South Americans are accustomed to the DR standards and given their currencies are stonger than the Dominican peso, I can see how vacationing in DR can be a bargain for them. The excursions are torture and uncomfortable with the lack of infrastructure. Last but not least, Food Poisoning! My spouse fell very ill from their food and drinks. I was more selective, bought my own drinks, stuck with wine, avoided foods from excursions.
