FAQs - booking South Africa flights

  • Are there any events in Cape Town that I should know about booking a flight to the city?

This city has a couple of very large events that are quite popular with visitors to South Africa. In March, the AFI Cape Town fashion week occurs, as does the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Since both of these large events occur in the same month, it is best to book your tickets as far in advance to the city as possible when travelling here during this month.

  • If I would like to travel along the very famous Garden Route on the southeastern coast of South Africa, which airport should I fly to?

Since this route travels the southeastern coast of the country along the Indian Ocean from Mossel Bay to Storms River, a great place to start your journey at the eastern end of this course is at the Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ). There are a number of two-stop flights to this airport from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), with layovers at airports like Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) and Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB).

  • Which flights to South Africa are the most convenient?

Flights to South Africa always include at least one layover at an international airport. However, the national carriers Air Canada and South African Airlines jointly offer flights from major Canadian hubs such as Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Edmonton International Airport (YEG), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Johannesburg with just one layover at a major European airport such as London Heathrow (LHR) or Frankfurt International Airport (FRA). Travellers should note that Delta Airlines offers a direct flight from Miami to Johannesburg. This could be a convenient option, as there are many connections between Miami International Airport (MIA) and cities across Canada.

  • Do I need a visa to travel to South Africa?

Canadian citizens do not need a visa to visit South Africa for stays of up to 90 days. However, your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your expected date of departure from South Africa and it must have at least two blank pages as you will get a 'temporary resident visa' upon arrival. If your passport does not contain at least two empty pages for the temporary resident visa, you will be refused entry into the country.

  • Where should I fly to within South Africa?

O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is South Africa's most important airport, servicing Johannesburg and Pretoria, and is the perfect starting point for your journey due to its many domestic and international connections. If you are travelling to the southwestern region of the country, then Cape Town International Airport (CPT) might be the best option as it handles international flights from Europe and Asia.

  • I want to visit Kruger National Park. Where should I fly into?

To visit Kruger National Park, fly into The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP). This airport is located near the city of Nelspruit and is a common gateway into Kruger National Park. Carriers such as AirLink and SA Express offer flights to domestic destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Once at the airport, you can rent a car and get to the national park in approximately 30min.

  • How long is the flight to South Africa?

An average direct flight from Canada to South Africa takes 34h 40m, covering a distance of 22636 km. The most popular route is Montreal - Johannesburg with an average flight time of 20h 35m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to South Africa?

The cheapest ticket to South Africa from Canada found in the last 72 hours was C$ 1,055. The most popular route is Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl to Johannesburg OR Tambo and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was C$ 1,064.

  • What are the most popular destinations in South Africa?

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is Johannesburg (60% of total searches to South Africa). The next most popular destinations are Cape Town (31%) and Durban (4%). Searches for flights to Port Elizabeth (1%), to Hoedspruit (0.6%) and to Richards Bay (0.6%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

It was a Red-Eye flight so was not comfortable enough to sleep, but seat was as expected. Crew was great and in-flight entertainment was excellent. Flight was smooth

Great, on time departure, friendly and accommodating crew, great leg room, Smith flight

I received the two differed meals: chicken and pasta. I asked and I received. I am anti-wasting food!

Fast boarding and exit. Different snacks other than almonds and sun chips.

Boarding started almost 20 minutes late with no explanation. Then the take off was delayed by 15 minutes with no update or explanation from the captain which was very stressful because I had a connecting flight with a very short layover. The The flight tracker on the screen at my seat was for a different flight and the QR code for the menu did not work. I asked for Sun Chips which were shown as harvest cheddar flavor on the website but the ones they gave me were salsa and I'm allergic to tomatoes and I couldn't eat them. The flight to Tulsa was okay but there was no Wi-Fi or entertainment on board which would have been nice to know

Why, on an 11+ hour flight, is the food being served at a speed resembling a 90-minute flight? Flight crew practically threw our food at us, then cleaned it up before everyone was done. All, presumably, so that they could retreat away for the next 7 hours to be completely unavailable. No additional beverages were served for hours. Delta is supposed to be the premium American carrier, but on this flight, it made me wish I was flying someone else. Also, the “upgrade” to comfort+ is a joke. It was worse than Japan Airline’s lowest level economy class. Literally no comparison between these two airlines. I wouldn’t fly Delta from Tokyo again unless I absolutely had to. Very disappointing amenities and service!

I recently had foot surgery and traveled my first time needing assistance. The flight attendants on this flight went above and beyond accommodating my partner and I. I had a panic attack from the medication I was on, and the flight attendants made me feel safe and comfortable when they saw me in distress. They relocated me to an area of the aircraft that made me feel more comfortable and we had our own row which helped reduce my anxiety tremendously.

I have to say that Delta has improved their service radically since I flew with them last. I purposely have avoided flying with them for years owing to absolutely terrible service. This is no longer the case, I am glad to say.

W were seated in the middle of 4-seat row so we had to bother other passengers to get out. Seats were packed together too tightly. It was a very uncomfortable place to sit for 8 hours.

Ran out of my choice of main course in BClass. Kind of weird combo for substitute.

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

no issues at all... Kudos to the food. This time was really really good

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

One of the vstewardeses wanted to bump me of the plane for absolutely nothing. There is CCTV in the plane ans everything can be verified. Very disappointing , you all will see, o other 5 years and the passangers who does not smile to flight attendent will be bumped off...

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

Mostly fine. Minor delays departing and arriving. Quite a cramped plane, not so much as regards legroom but very narrow seats. Quiet nice food. Non-working USB charger. Flight attendants were helpful but not particularly proactive — one had to work to get their attention (but all was fine once they notice you), very Dutch style:)

I travel frequently. The flight was late again... KLM should really try and be on time

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

The crew was doing their best on an old plane needing updating. Chairs that creaked and wouldn’t stay in position. My tray table was unusable as was on-board entertainment due the audio needing usb earphones (that were not provided). Prior to boarding in Toronto and despite being scheduled for a wheelchair and assistance, we were dropped off by clubcar without a wheelchair which I found myself by a gate. Due to no boarding gate assigned at that time we waited and when it was, it subsequently was moved from 64 to 95. No help could be found so I pushed my husband’s chair to that furthest gate in the airport at the highest speed possible for a 73 year old. And by that I mean I ran. It was a very stressful experience.

Wifi wasn't working on one of the UA flights after boarding.

Leg room was lacking. Legs crammed into seat in front.

T hey did a great job. Flight was on time .

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Crew was not very helpful. They forgot to serve me coffee and had to wait for a long time.It looked as if they were not very happy with what they were doing.

The flight I was connecting with waited for me even though my 1st flight was late. I really appreciated that.

The seat is too hard and my back and bottom are having servers pain

There was no lounge for passengers waiting before boarding the aircraft at F65, so passengers are just sitting on the floor or just spread everywhere the premises before boarding.

Great crew, friendly. Found the trip long just sitting with no onboard entertainment

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

Don't often sit in 1st class. Our experience was great.

lounge was the highlight - seats weren't that comfortable - it was a full flight but no complaints

On time flight , great service from crew , comfortable and enjoyable

heat was on full blast. It was like the Tropics inside the plan.

The pilot was hilarious and spoke to the passengers for 10 minutes before take off. First class food was spot on and they got us in early after a late take off. DFW to PHL

less delays; there was an hour+ delay on both flights. self serve check in kiosks weren't available for British Airways flights

The flight was delayed multiple times. I had to buy a new tickets (4 tickets) for my family for a total of $5200 cnd And missed thanks giving with our family. Very very poor and disappointing service.

At 11 pm, we were notified that our 6 am departure would be postponed until 7:28 am. Upon arrival at the terminal, this became 8:30 am. Additional deicing and atc delays, while beyond the control of the crew, had us running like maniacs through the DFW terminal where we made our international connection with literally minutes to spare. The utter incompetence and carelessness of Mesa Airlines almost ruined the beginning of our trip we had planned and booked many months in advance. We will absolutely avoid using them in the future at all cost.

The crew on board were all very pleasant and happy to help. The flight had the old business class seats. The departure board in the business lounge did not update and kept on saying ' gate open' but never said boarding. When I got nervous about the departure time and walked to the gate I was told off rudely for being late.

Entertainment catalog certainly needs an upgrade to include better and latest content. Food was not good at all - they need to cook something edible. Five starts to the crew and on tim performance of British airways though!!

It took over an hour to check in my bag a there was just one person at the counter. Security lines for business class also took a while. Although I reported 3 hours before my flight I made it to the gate 20 mins before boarding. To add to that jewelry was removed from my checked in baggage. I am submitting a separate complaint to Mumbai airport for that.

I travelled on biz class and f there is no water in the toilette to wash my hands I would expect to have this indicated somehow and not just finding out when I'm there expecting to be able to wash my hands and teeth. Also this is in general that it is always so rushy at the end of these kind of long flights. It is like we are sitting there for 9 hours and the last 1.5 hours just feels like I have time for nothing. Because food comes and at the same time we are close to destination everyone tries to pack their stuff and go to toilette and eat and everything :))) not that like I would know a good solution here I just wanted to raise this :)

Better communication to those connecting flights and have a customer care desk at the airports

No entertainment available on flight. Seating too cramped fir an average adult.

Boarding could be smoother. But the flight crew was excellence. Very professional, friendly and helpful.

It was good… always SO many people… I realize that’s how they make money but wow!

The crew were great. The comfort and food was terrible, worst I have experienced in recent times and I fly a lot. It was like a refrigerator in the back and even with 4 blankets could not get comfortable. Seats are very tight and with the electronic box under the aisle seats, there was no legroom. BA did a bait and switch on the price, lowballing the price and then requiring add ons, like paying for a checked bag. While common on domestic flights, I have never had to pay for the first bag flying intercontinentally. Also, no “choice “ of seating at check in. There was not a single other free option. I could pay to choose a seat in the same row. I have never had this happen either.usually, at check in, you have a choice (I.e. free) on other airlines of what is not occupied in your section. I will never never fly BA again. Too bad, since the crew were some of the best with the best attitudes I have experienced.

Chaotic boarding at JNB, last minute gate change with no announcements.
