Punta Marenco Lodge - Agujitas de Drake - Balcony

8.0 Excellent (161 reviews)
C$ 138+
Overview Reviews
Punta Marenco Lodge is located in a National Wildlife Refuge. It is surrounded by tropical vegetation and boasts private beach access. Punta Marenco's Lodge offers guests a private deck, with views of the Pacific and surrounding jungle. Each room has a private bathroom. Family style meals are served in the open air restaurant. The beautiful Caño Island Nature Reserve is 1 hour away by boat, while Playa Danta beach is just 60 metres away.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing ocean views, plenty of birds and other wildlife around, quiet, good food.
Cons: Monkeys had a way of getting inside the room to steal food. One morning we had to scare one off. Perfect alarm clock!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The location and surrounding terrain were awesome. Best location in all of Costa Rica
Cons: It was difficult to get to and Location instructions were not the best
7.5 Good
Pros: The rooms and property were very clean and beautiful.
Cons: The food portions were often times smaller based on if there were busier nights.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a wonderful place to stay and get away from it all! We were able to relax, enjoy nature and the many secluded beaches around the natural reserve. Bahia Drake is an hour walk along the gorgeous coast; we loved walking this trail. Jenny, the manager, was fantastic! She was attentive, informative and very helpful. I would definitely come back to Punta Marenco.
Cons: Unfortunately, our trip to Caño Island was not the best experience. The guide was almost an hour late and did not seem very knowledgeable or passionate about his job. It didn't help that the sea was very turbulent and so many of the corals were dead, hence so little sea life...a bit sad.
7.5 Good
Pros: The rooms and the community area have an amazing view and the location is great. It’s truely one of the best places to stay when visiting Drake Bay. You are staying in the middle of the jungle.
Cons: We stayed there for 4 nights and they didn’t clean the room or offered us fresh towels. The food is okay but we expected a little bit more for what they charge $15 (dinner).
8.5 Excellent
Pros: Great communal feel, great meeting people from all over the world, exchanging stories and photos.
Cons: Water was not always available in the bathroom.
7.0 Good
Pros: The remoteness is refreshing. The lunch and dinner (at extra cost) is of great quality. Helpful staff.
Cons: The 'road' to and from the property was barely passable even at the start of the dry season and with our 4 x 4. No bedside tables or lights and no sockets. No balcony light. There is no hot water which in itself is not bad but it should be mentioned on the website!. No food allowed in the cabin as the monkeys break in through the netting ceiling (could easily be remedied with a wooden ceiling!).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The end of the road - we were in paradise, there was just us and the birds and jungle creatures.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location overlooking ocean with easy access to beach. Boat access to Corcovado NP and Isla de Cano. Terrific staff and good food.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful remote location. Very conscientious and professional staff. Good access to Corcovado National Park. Simple, rustic open air cabins. Easy walk to beaches. Lots of wildlife. Great birding location.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The location is beautiful and quiet. We have seen a lot of birds and animals around.
Cons: They are not reliable on booking tours at all. They have cancelled us once and didn’t even tell us. Also, when you pay a tour by card it doesn’t work as they only take a picture of your card, and by surprise at the end of the tour you have to go to Drake Bay and pay at the tour’s office terminal. They didn’t mention that booking with cash is cheaper until we got there. Their in-house night tour was pathetic. They tell you to be ready for tours or meals at certain time and everything starts late without notice. Also, It’s highly expensive considering the lack of infrastructure and personnel. Drinkable water, power sockets, and wifi, all available only at reception, so you need to pack all your bottles, mobile devices and chargers when going to reception. Sometimes there’s no free socket. Wifi signal is super low even there. Other times there’s no drinkable water, so you have to wait until they refill a 20 litre bucket (only one for all), but as regularly there’s only one person attending everybody you need to wait. Food portions are very small at lunch, right when people come starving from tours and activities.

2.9 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing
Cons: - unfriendly staff - unfriendly management - dirty rooms - exaggerated prices for poor facilities
6.3 Good
Pros: Situation on the beach
Cons: Manager - not sympathetic at all, not to say worse. Always having impression of bothering him when asking for something. Very different from all the very noce and helpful costarican hosts... Made the stay way less enjoyable in my opinion
1.0 Poor
Pros: Nothing
Cons: I am not usually a picky traveller but the pictures portrayed online are completely deceiving. Tiny rooms, dusty, unclean, bathroom nothing like photos. Dirty uneven stairs to get to rooms. Stained bedsheets. By far the worst hotel for 130 USD I have seen in all of Costa Rica

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Unbelievably beautiful! Sustainable and delicious!
Cons: Nada
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I was so impressed. WOW! The staff was so lovely, knowledgeable and available. The chef and staff were very accommodating with my diet and I ate so well (and healthy). The grounds and room were gorgeous, clean and relaxing. You could chill or be active - there were loads of things to do whether you book a tour or go for a stroll on your own. I was originally hesitant about the cost, but now that I'm back I am so grateful I stayed here. It was a trip I'll never forget and I got incredible value. I've already starting encouraging my friends and family to go.
Cons: The internet connection could've been stronger in the room, but it was actually good to disconnect for a few days so all good!

6.0 Good
Pros: Across is super market. Nice outside sitting area but I was only staying overnight. Appreciate the beach pickup.
Cons: The fans weren't enough to keep room cool. I was overcharged even when I pointed out the website price. Room needs a fridge
6.0 Good
Pros: Good location, friendly staff and comfy bed. Very basic room, but met our requirements for our 1 night stay. The little restaurant attached was nice too and had great coffee.
Cons: Issues with the power cutting out, but this was resolved. The fan in out room didn't work, but was replaced by the owner. Very noisy ceiling fan. Power sockets were all quite high on the wall, not ideal for charging cameras/phones etc. Coffee maker in the room would have been a nice touch as this seems pretty standard in Costa Rica.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nearby restaurant was nice and a short walk to the beach. The town has a great relaxed vibe and everyone was reaslly friendly. great for nearby wildlife.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Clean basic accommodations. I didn’t have ac. There are rooms that have them but weren’t available for my booking although I had two good quality fans that were adequate to cool off for a good nights sleep. . Staff and management/ owners are friendly and answer questions needed for tours etc. They do partner with a tour group that are only a few mins away and will walk down with you the first booking so you know where to go. Restaurant on site that offers the local cuisine. Good value and quality. A store right across the street and laundry facilities within a two min walk. About three mins walk to a very quiet Beach to swim and relax. Town is up the hill, about a 4 min walk for more restaurants, shops, tour operators etc.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Spacious and very clean (cleaning every day, whats not the standard here). nice little terrace with hammock, supermarket and restaurant close.
Cons: no breakfast, besides that highly to recommend
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great service

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location, access to trails, baby sloth living in the tree, ocean view tent , beach accessibility, food, and of course the people.
Cons: I liked everything
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast and dinner were excellent. Staff was very nice
Cons: We thougt we could pay the reservation with creditcard, but that was not possible. And paypal refused. But the owner was very helpfull so we solved the problem
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice living in tents while still enjoying all the comforts. Super friendly and helpful staff.
7.9 Good
Pros: The place is just a small paradise! Right at the beach, waking up with the howler monkeys. Hearing Tucans and Scarlet Macaws. The tours were properly organized. We enjoyed our get away very much.
Cons: For us the volutunteers could have been more of service. Serving dinner when they don't know what food they are serving and when we arrived it was all a bit fast and we didn't receive all the information. One familymember wanted to go diving, the manager said that it wasn't possible to arrange a tour just for one. So she went on a snorkling trip with three other familymembers. They were on the boat with another group, a group that went diving... So she was very disappointed she couldn't go when it would have been possible.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful and friendly site is under new management. The mother-daughter team is working hard to upgrade the site. The beds were comfortable, the food excellent and the staff that is willing to help you whenever they can. The beach site is along the Drake trail so getting into town or out into the jungle is a matter of turning left or right from your tent site or staying put for a swim. All boat taxis make a regular stop here for tours or getting in or out to Sierpe so transportation is not an issue.
Cons: The showers were temperamental so the temperature was not always what you wanted. Electrical outlets were limited so you had to plan out what needed to be charged and what could wait.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Verry helpfull people, nice food, exalent location
7.5 Good
Pros: Beachfront property, pretty friendly staff. Isolated, trails easy to spot, beaches are gorgeous. wildlife everywhere..woke to howler monkeys every morning, whales seen from beach.
Cons: Great to have food included due to being over an hour away from a village. but the times changed on a daily basis and if your out hiking you have to be close enough to get back for meals as its everyone eats at same time. Breakfast is always the same, lunches and dinner are very good but small portions and everyone got some type of stomach issue while staying. Took 3 days to clear mine and one lady was really bad off and slept her 3 days there. The Corcovado tour was long which was great 4 hours at the park, but I feel a better guide would have helped us see more. I would go again. bring in snacks and book tours through Drake.

Pros: View from cabana was spectacular. Great on site restaurant. Staff were really helpful. Bottled water easily available.
Cons: It was a long walk up many steps to cabana.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were clean, good sized and comfortable. The staff was very nice and helpful. The location was fantastic with a great view of the bay and sun rise.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Taking the boat from Sierpe was the beginning of our adventure to Jinites de Osa. The boat dropped us off on the beach right in front of the hotel, very convenient! We were met by staff that assisted other guests with their luggage (we had backpacks so we managed ourselves). The check in was simple and informative. There is a bar and restaurant at this hotel. We had lunch, dinner and breakfast the next day, every meal was great! Friendly bar staff. The restaurant overlooks the beach, very relaxing. We had the superior rooms where, yes, you have to walk 180 steps but it was worth it for us, and people that complain about the walk, don't! You are made well aware that there are 180 steps to walk up. Yes, it may be hard, but that did not disturb us at all. The room was spacious, very clean. Beds need to be improved a bit, average comfort. The bathroom and shower were great. The terrace in front of the room allowed us to sit and watch the birds fly by and we caught the (ending) sunset. There are mosquitos but you're in the jungle so you should expect to wear bug spray. We took the trail from the hotel to the beach, a 20 minute walk, crossed some cool animals, a foot bridge, and was pleasantly surprised by cocolito beach. Very nice, clean, small and the picture image of what we expected.
Cons: Not much to say about things we didn't like, we were very happy with this hotel!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Surrounded by nature, nice views, the rooms were spacious, nice staff.
Cons: many steps to walk to reach the rooms on the hill. Only these rooms have AIrcon, the rooms at sealevel are without A/C.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view is amazing. It's attached to a Restaurant that is Italian and Seafood specialty and is highly rated. The room and bathroom are on the larger side. The deck outside has a beautiful view of the bay. You can walk to many beaches for swimming and sunsets. Birdsong and wildlife all around you. Restaurants and markets are a short walk away. Throughly enjoyed my stay at Jinetes de Osa
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast included with our rooms was excellent. The hotel's restaurant was a highlight, open air, right on the water with an awesome view.
Cons: would consider asking for a room with a/c...very hot and humid. We should have got better info from the hotel about what to bring for the tours they organized. So there are no docks, and the beach at Corcovado is rocky so take water shoes. Consider a dry bag for the boat tours.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was ideal; on the beach, out of town, but easy walking distance by path and beach to the little village.
Cons: Would have liked a small refrigerator in our room.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location in Drake Bay. Good that the ferry from Sierpe drops you on the beach in front of the hotel. Room was large and comfortable. Lovely balcony and spectacular views. We really enjoyed all the tours we booked through the hotel (Corcovado, Isla Cano snorkelling and the night tour). Easy to walk into town and also a nice walk the other direction to a couple of beautiful beaches.
Cons: No toiletries provided.
