The city is renowned for its well-preserved medieval walls and 13th-century Sé Cathedral de Faro, a living testament to Faro’s rich past. Among its many attractions, the Cidade Velha (Old Town) offers a glimpse into Faro's storied architecture. Meanwhile, the serene Ria Formosa Natural Park provides a beautiful contrast to the city with its wildlife and picturesque landscapes. I always love exploring these memorable sites and sampling the varied local cuisine during my visits to Faro. Accommodation options in Faro have adapted to the city's growing appeal, offering a diverse range of options. For those seeking outstanding stays, the best hotels in Faro provide the perfect blend of comfort and convenience. Here’s my pick of the top hotels in Faro.

Minutes from the Old Town and waterfront, the 5-star 3HB Faro is one of the best luxury hotels in Faro. I was spellbound by its chic design from the moment I arrived. Rooms are individually decorated in greens and blues, offering a luxurious yet minimalist feel, with ample windows and terraces that maximize the sea views.

The rooftop is a highlight with its infinity pool and panoramic vistas, while the spa provides a tranquil escape thanks to its natural wood and marble-encased indoor pool and pampering treatments. The on-site restaurants serve Portuguese and Italian menus, the former emphasizing locally sourced items.

What stood out most was the fact the city centre was close enough for easy exploration, yet entering the hotel felt like being on a remote retreat. Take a boat tour of nearby Ria Formosa Natural Park for a glimpse of the region's unique wildlife.

Situated in the city's heart, Hotel Faro & Beach Club is contemporary in design with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The 90 rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with decor that emphasizes comfort and prioritizes fantastic views of either the marina or the Old Town.

The Cosmopolitan Rooftop Bar has a stunning pool for early or late day lounging with a cocktail in hand, while the Ria Formosa Restaurant serves regional bites. I loved having breakfast there with the panoramic views stretching out over Faro's harbour.

As one of the best hotels in Faro, the property’s central location makes it an ideal base for discovering the city. During the summer, I suggest taking the complimentary shuttle to the private beach club, Sal'mare (which is a beachside steakhouse by night), complete with sunbeds, seaside cocktails, and striking sunsets.

The recently renovated interiors of the AP Eva Senses Hotel make this a great choice for design-loving travellers. The 134 rooms are sizable, many with balconies that overlook the marina or the city.

Aside from leisurely swims on the rooftop terrace, I spent much of my time at the wellness centre, which featured a spa and gym that made it easy to unwind after a day wandering the town. The buffet breakfast at the Harune Restaurant is always a treat, with a wide range of options, from local pastries to fresh fruit.

The property is a short walk from landmarks like Sé Cathedral and the Arco da Vila. After thoroughly enjoying the facilities, I advise spending an evening at the nearby marina, where you'll find a variety of restaurants and bars with seafront views.

Located on a quiet residential street, Casa Amarela is a boutique gem and a real hidden treasure. Its 25 rooms effortlessly combine vintage charm with modern touches, making this one of the best hotels in Faro for those looking for something a little different.

The hotel is set in a beautifully restored 19th-century townhouse, which retains some original features alongside chic updates. The 25 rooms are styled with carefully selected antique furnishings, local artwork, and calming neutral tones. I basked in the intimate feel of the place, especially the sun-drenched courtyard, where breakfast is served daily.

For me, it felt like a home-away-from-home with all the creature comforts of a deluxe accommodation. I recommend wandering the nearby markets and lively squares or, for longer promenades, taking a trip to the neighbouring ecological park Jardim da Alameda João de Deus.

Set inside a meticulously restored townhouse, the Opus One Luxury Guesthouse & Wine looks and feels more like a private retreat than a hotel. It’s easily one of the best hotels in Faro for a more intimate stay.

The elegant property has only four rooms, each with modern amenities like rainfall showers and high-quality bedding. The communal spaces include an inviting lounge and outdoor pool area. I appreciate the curated wine selection available and really enjoyed having a glass in the garden or by the pool at the end of the day.

In the evening, I recommend a stroll to the artisan stores nearby for an authentic taste of Faro's lively culture. Afterwards, the cozy wine bar becomes a nice spot to unwind, making this luxe guesthouse an excellent choice for a relaxing, boutique stay in Faro.

Tucked away on a quiet street conveniently close to the train station, Hotel Made Inn Faro is a great budget option. The 20 rooms are compact but modern with clean, wood-heavy decor and bursts of muted colour that brighten the space.

The continental breakfast is a nice touch, with pastries, cereals, fruit, and strong coffee to kickstart your day. I found the dining room itself particularly appealing: terracotta walls, wooden tables and a faux vertical garden make it both practical and inviting.

Discover the city's top landmarks just a short walk away, including the Igreja do Carmo, with its stunning baroque architecture and famous Bone Chapel. The hotel is also close to Faro's Old Town, where you can stroll along the cobbled streets and admire the Arco da Porta Nova.

Casa Apollo Guesthouse may only have a few rooms, but the tasteful, whitewashed decor and cozy details make it a standout among the top-rated hotels in Faro. Known for its personal touch, the public spaces, including the garden and small pool, provide a lovely place to restore your senses after a long day of sightseeing.

I recommend taking advantage of the guesthouse’s prime location, just a short stroll from top landmarks like the cobblestoned Old Town, where guests can explore the historic streets at leisure.

For history lovers, the Museu Municipal de Faro is a must-see, featuring artifacts from the prehistoric, Roman, and Medieval periods. At the end of the day, return to the peaceful sanctuary of this hotel, with its laid-back yet stylish ambiance.

The Best Western Dom Bernardo offers an outstanding balance between comfort and affordability. There are 43 spacious rooms to choose from, each equipped with simple yet comfortable decor, and a generous buffet breakfast of local pastries, cheese, and fruit.

The friendly staff added value to my experience by always being prepared with helpful tips and suggestions about the city. And, as one of the best hotels in Faro for budget-conscious travellers, the location near landmarks like the Arco da Porta Nova is hard to beat.

For evening adventures, the marina is just a skip and a jump away, with plenty of cafés and restaurants offering Portuguese cuisine. I would say the overall feel of this hotel is pleasingly relaxed, making it a great base for exploring Faro without breaking the bank.

Among the best hotels in Faro, Hospedaria Frangaria boasts an inviting atmosphere with a touch of old-world elegance. Its blend of traditional hospitality and modern comfort makes this hotel a firm favourite during my travels in Faro.

The hotel has 52 rooms, each with thoughtful amenities, including a well-stocked minibar. I particularly enjoyed the continental breakfast served in a cozy breakfast room livened up with handcrafted wall decorations.

Its location is ideal for discovering Faro, with key attractions like the ancient city walls just a short drive away. If you have the time, I recommend going inside the Faro Cathedral (also known as the Igreja de Santa Maria), which contains some of the Algarve's most treasured antiquities from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Nestled in a picturesque village a 20-minute drive from Faro, this enchanting property provides a tranquil escape from busy city life. Casa de Estoi combines rustic elegance with a serene environment, easily making it one of the best hotels in Faro and its surrounding area.

The property's design reflects its historical roots, featuring traditional Portuguese decor with a touch of contemporary style. Each of the eight rooms boasts bespoke touches like exposed wooden beams and whimsically furnished spaces. Amenities include an outdoor pool, a lush garden, and a peaceful lounge area.

When you've had your fill of the landmarks and attractions available in nearby Faro, I suggest exploring the Estoi Palace Gardens, a beautiful spot for a stroll among exotic plants and ancient architecture.
