This was a beautiful hotel that had great amenities and an incredibly kind and helpful staff. The breakfast that is included is amazing! And the dinner there is also spectacular. The indoor / outdoor geothermal pools are incredible, as well.
I was disappointed that i wasn't able to get a spa service day-of. Apparently, you have to book those way in advance. I ended up going to a different hotel in town, but it would have been great to do it at my hotel. Perhaps keep a couple of spots open for day-of bookings for hotel guests? Also, and I think this might be a Portugal thing, but the beds are kinda hard.
Fantastic hotel nestled in the small village of Furnas. The hotel staff was amazing, quickly answering any questions we had about the hotel and surrounding area. We were even greeted by the Hotel General Manger. Make sure to eat at A Terra. You can tell they put a lot of love into what they do. Delicious food that will be missed upon return to the US. A true gem.
THE HOTEL On one of the last untouched paradises in Europe (Portugal’s Azores), Furnas Boutique Hotel, Thermal & Spa celebrates the archipelago’s rich natural and cultural heritage. With soothing and, at times, whimsical interiors by celebrated Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva, the hotel echoes the omnipresent natural world that surrounds it. Here, funky wallpapers, glass walls providing stunning vistas, and a thermal spa with the healing properties of the area’s springs put guests at ease amid inspiring design. The restaurant and grocery store in the lobby market also feature regional highlights and produce. MADE BY ORIGINALS As the son of a gourmand and the grandson of a Lisbon hotelier, Miguel Guedes de Sousa has hospitality in his DNA. The CEO of Discover Hotel Management built upon his pedigree by attending the César Ritz hotel school in Switzerland, The Culinary Institute of America, and Cornell University where he completed a management and Food & Beverage program. With a first-class culinary and hospitality education under his belt, Guedes de Sousa worked at hotels in Thailand, The Philippines, England, and Spain, among others, as well as traveling the world hunting white truffles, tasting fine wines, and running ultra-marathons in Morocco. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Saraiva + Associados is one of the world’s biggest architectural practices, and jumped at the opportunity of restoring the Furnas municipality’s old thermal center. Although challenging, the firm added a neutral metal structure in anthracite gray to the existing building, and added glass panels to accentuate the beauty of the natural surroundings. Reflecting the natural heritage of São Miguel, basalt stones were chosen for the hotel’s exterior walls and interior flooring, while the thermal energy and spring water of the area is harvested through the building’s pools, Turkish bath, sauna, and showers.
