Just perfect on everything
The service in the restaurant is not up to the standard, the lady is not that nice and push us to leave the restaurant not in a good manner. Food is not that tasty! The hotel is quite old, the toilet in the room is smelly. I will never go back.....overall experience is not enjoyable!
The room was spacious and provided a good tea making set. We also had a private shower and soaking bath. The communal bathing facilities and outside onsen were picturesque and it was good to soak in a genuine artesian water. Communal nude showering to get clean and onsen soaking for relaxation is normal in this setting. The lobby lounge was comfortable with pretty views of the garden and surrounding mountains. The evening breeze from the mountains smelt piney and delicious.
This property seemed to be geared to asian travellers and did not give the usual warm welcome or helpful support we had experienced elsewhere from our hosts in Japan. The Yukata provided were worn and frayed and I did not feel comfortable to wear them around the hotel. Our room faced a car park (not all rooms have good views). As a westerner, be prepared to be regarded (very subtly of course) as "dirty" no matter how much you scrub yourself in the communal shower room.
I didn’t like anything about this Onsen hotel at all!
For the price I paid, this Onsen looks like a scene in horror movie. My expectation was the hotel is aged but well maintained, but this is not the case. Staff are not friendly. Food is way below average. The Hida beef dinner was only 4 pieces of thin layer half the size of my thumb. Bathroom is dark and smelly. The tatami room smells like rotten veggies. My son got bug bites all over his arms and lower legs after sitting on the tatami. The public Onsen bath is not clean, it runs 24/7. Mold along the window inside my room. This hotel might have been a fancy hotel 60 years ago when Gero was one of the best in Japan hot spring. But neither the building nor services are well maintained. I paid the same price for a much nicer Onsen hotel in Fukui. Not only a nicer place, but the food and staff are also higher quality. Considering both Gero and Fukui are 2.5 hrs driving from Nagoya, Fukui is a much wiser choice.
With a stay at Gero Onsen Bosenkan in Gero, you'll be on a river, within a 5-minute drive of Gero Onsen and Onsen Museum. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk and a safe deposit box at the front desk. Free self parking is available onsite.
