OK for a budget hotel
Good stuff - check in person was friendly and personable. Room was clean and cleaning staff did an adequate job. We were very happy to find a refrigerator in our room - a nice perk for our extended stay. We had plenty of pillows and the beds were reasonably comfortable. Hotel was very quiet - a pleasant surprise given they were fully booked for the weekend. The windows opened a few inches and we appreciated the fresh air. Good central location.
Room for improvement - the evening front desk person was much less on the ball (away from the desk for 10-15 minutes, seemed unsure how to answer our question or solve our minor questions/issues). Our plastic cups were never replaced (we were told they “ran out” and we had to take some from the breakfast counter). The room was very plain, decorated in unattractive colors and with only one, somewhat odd, piece of artwork on the wall). They allow smoking just outside the back door (closet to our room) and there were quite a few butts scattered around the doorway. There was no HBO booklet, which is common in most hotels, and no binder telling us anything about the hotel or the area. My companion wanted to use the pool but her key wouldn’t work and the staff had to unlock the door for ker with a regular key. The breakfast selection was limited, as were the toiletries. When we checked out the front desk person took our keys but never really spoke to us and never asked us how we enjoyed our stay.
Terrible internet (too slow to even watch YouTube's videos), bad was not really comfortable, and too manies layers on the bad. Rest good
Best value in the area
40-50 dollars less than anything else in the area. Has everything you could expect from a budget hotel and then some. Bed was surprising comfortable and the place was pretty clean. Continental breakfast was decent. Good size fridge in the room. AC/heat control worked fine and was easy to adjust, which is rare in my experience.
Location is pretty much in the middle of a parking lot. Guy working at the front desk was dressed kind of sloppy with the top few buttons of his shirt undone. But it was a pretty hot day, so I get it.
If you're spending time in both Northampton and Amherst, the Econo Lodge is about equidistant between both, although its location is nothing special -- in front of a Wal Mart, grocery store and others. It's clean, not noisy, has a small pool and the staff is friendly and efficient.
Completely charmless, and it needs some updating. My wife and I joked about a "round-screen" TV in the room, which seems about 15 years old. There was paint peeling on the bathroom ceiling. There's nothing that can be done about being located in front of strip shopping center and a storage facility, but keeping the place up to date would help.
Stay away on Homecoming weekend
The staff was friendly
Poor management of rowdy guests. The third floor was like a frat house. When I called at 2:am to complain the desk clerk just chalked it up to homecoming weekend at UMass. Also the sheets didn't fit the bed which didn't fit the box spring mattress.
One night stand
The room was clean comfortable and served its purpose. We just had an overnight stay between zip line and white water rafting at Zoar.
I didn't like people smoking outside the building
