Pros: Wow, what a treat. We had only a quick stay in Nozawa Onsen planned on a long ramble around Japan and this hotel was great. Our only regret was not staying longer. We visited during an un-busy time so had the hotel basically to ourselves. The room was huge and the most comfortable futons ever. We were welcomed with an easy check-in and tips for local area including the 13 free hot springs in the area. One is less than a 1 minute walk away. The hotel was in the heart of the village area (or one of the hearts) so lots of shops and restaurants around - many were closed for season but regardless, plenty to amuse you on a walk. The proprietor also provided an extra snack and coffee in the morning as we woke too late for normal meal and also let us leave car for a while so we could stroll around. All together, a great comfortable, unpretentious, welcoming Utopia. PS we even had a great view from our room window.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: A choice of Japanese or Western. Had both. Plentiful and nice.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Top location and very friendly hosts
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the locations were excellent only a few minutes walk by the bus terminal and super close to the village, therefore easy access to all restaurant and supermarket. a small public onsen also just outside so super convenience. close to the Nagasaka Gondola (maybe around 7 mins walk uphill) and lots of stairs to get to the gondola. if you are renting equipments there are places where you can store your ski gear so you don't have to take it down with you. PS: please have the breakfast, they are excellent
Cons: I was a little disappointing with no pyjamas provided. usually the Japanese accomodations always provide Pyjamas for all guests.

Pros: What a welcome we got and what wonderful hosts! We spent two weeks in Japan and the stay in this traditional house was the highlight of our trip. Never before have we been so well treated and kindly welcomed as by these hosts. Our daughters were thrilled and are still talking about the lovely lady running the hotel. If we were to come back we would definitely stay with them again - such a friendly family!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very clean guesthouse Friendly and helpful owner Japanese style breakfast
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had an amazing experience here thanks to our hosts--we didn't spend any time near the house because most of the sights near it (the snow monkey park, Shibu-Onsen, etc) are a drive away. However, our hosts were so helpful in driving us to the town, and as long as made our way back to the train station at the end of the day he came and picked us up! Gave us maps of the area, suggestions, anything we needed. Rooms were clean with a great view of the mtns, nice bathroom facilities.
Cons: There isn't an en suite bathroom--however, we knew this going in as it is a guesthouse and another family was staying there at the same time.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean room, owner very good n friendly
Cons: Nippon car rental unable access guesthouse GPS, maybe only Nippon old GPS, but able access by Google map
10.0 Excellent

Cons: The rules of the guesthouse where abit stringent only giving 2 hours to shower and set times for breakfast made it abit hard to relax. But we only stayed one night so was manageable

10.0 Excellent
Pros: An amazing host with the best little dog Axel to come home to after a day on the slopes! A lovely fireplace and common area with views of the ski fields and an easy walk across the road to start skiing. The home cooked food was excellent. This place is highly recommended!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a gorgeous small and very quiet and relaxing lodge. The service and cleanliness was exceptional. Lovely to have Axel the dog for hugs and he’s excellent with small children.
Cons: Don’t stay here if you need to be in a busy, noisy lodge in the heart of things.
7.1 Good
Pros: Close to the slopes . 20 metre walk , then clip in .
Cons: Bit of a walk to the main restaurant area .
9.2 Excellent
Pros: If you're looking for a QUIET, relaxing Chalet, Alp Bach is the place for you. It has a touch of old alpine European feel that makes the chalet cozy. The huge fireplace in the main living space is absolutely divine as is the breakfast - every day something new! The host is pleasant, welcoming and accommodating. She is happy to assist with any need you may have. My friend enjoyed how close the chalet is to the slopes, and took advantage of the ski-to-room usage.
Cons: The rooms are quite small, but cozy. The bathroom was tiny, but sufficient - my friend and I both enjoyed the Japanese soaking tub (although small). However, we were a little disappointed our toilets were not the warming kind (that was just a small detail we were expecting). The beds were a tad hard, but that was just our preference. *If you are looking for a QUIET chalet Alp Bach is the place for you. IF you are looking for a more social atmosphere you might want to look elsewhere. My friend and our were two different travelers - she is more social and enjoyed a night at the local watering holes. I was more inclined to return to the chalet for a quiet night in. Alcohol is NOT served at Alp Bach, and there is an 11pm "curfew". We just spoke to the host and she was happy to keep the key out for us. We also found we needed to "lock up" if we were out past 11pm.*
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Naoke is the most amazing host and nothing is too much trouble - trips to the bus station, help with ski hire, cups of tea, delicious meals, absolutely spotless lodge. Stunning lounge room, beautiful music - everything was perfect! Spacious warm drying room, spotless bathrooms, great ski-in ski out location. We loved staying here.
Cons: We couldn't fault anything here - this is a wonderful place to stay, and Naoke is an amazing host. If you are looking for great value accomm in a good location this is it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was sensational and extremely good value Our host Naoko was superb providing everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible The facility itself is first class and the attention to detail is amazing
Cons: A little bit out of the main hub but Naoko was always there for pick up and dropoff

Pros: Naoko is such a wonderful host. She and little Axel really make it feel like home!
Cons: Nothing - everything was great!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very happy with Matsuya. We stayed in two different rooms due to a late booking by us. The Japanese room was fabulous and roomy, the Western room smaller. Staff very helpful and breakfast great. When I get back to Nozawa again I'll be stayed here.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was made with care and was simply delicious. The location was perfect - less than a minute's walk to the main street and a very short walk to the moving walkway. The room was also very spacious and comfortable. I would certainly stay here again. Tremendous value for money.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is perfect.
7.9 Good
Pros: Fantastic location just off the main restaurant/shop street in Nozawa on the road that heads up to the Gondola. Spacious sunny tatami room with nice view towards old church. Very comfortable futon beds. Clean brand new (but shared) toilet facilities. Ski waxing/tuning room and large drying room.
Cons: Small and fairly basic bathroom/onsen (but there are plenty of other great public onsen close by). Gondola is close but its a steep uphill climb. Cold draft at night caused by full length windows and heater positioning meant half the room was very hot, the other half was cold.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing, the room was cozy, the onsen was great, breakfast and dinner were delicious and the lodge was in the centre of town right next to all of the shops and restaurants.
Cons: The only thing to note is that because the hotel is located in the centre of town, to get to the ski lift, you need to walk up a hill. But that's not really something to dislike.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is Great
Cons: Nothing
Japanese Style Pension Miyazawa - Nozawa Onsen - Building

9.0 Excellent (80 reviews)

Overview Reviews
When you stay at Wafu Pension MIYAZAWA in Nozawaonsen, you'll be near ski lifts, and a 4-minute walk from Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort and 6 minutes by foot from Kenmei-ji Temple.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice and small guest house at Nozawa onsen Staff is very very nice. He provides me for the medicine when i got pain from ski There is ski equipment rental onsite. Lovely stay as couple and family. Recommend for Ski lover it nears nagasaki gondola and they have shuttle slade to kid zone
Cons: i found no english sign of hotel name only japanese therfore we lost when the first time arrived. The way to hotel and floor in front of hotel is slippy. Please be careful while walking. You need to climb the way to ski area it is not easy for my first ski with ski shoe and all equipments to carry along
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and well managed Japanese style pension. Excellent and friendly service. Good for kids. Good rental of skis and snowboard.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was fantastic only 250 meters walk to the ski lift. The owners were super helpful and friendly.. We will definitely stay here again... Great little Onsen in the building...
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Its a Ryokan; which is what I wanted. The room I chose used shared facilities which were fine. The staff speak sufficient English for a stay by non Japanese speakers. Situated halfway between the ski slope and the town is convenient. Note the building colour is actually light grey!
Cons: I weigh 66kg but even for me the toilet cubicles (note they are western style) were chotto chisana
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had a fantastic stay at Pension Miyazawa! The staff were lovely, very accommodating and helpful with our early arrival, even getting our room ready for us at 1pm when we arrived at 11am. The location is fantastic, 5 minutes walk from the main Nagasaka Gondola (and a short skate/skin/walk up to the Hikage lift area and if the queue is long). Also 5 mins from the main street of town and fantastic (VERY HOT) public onsens. The lodge was cleaned daily, had a very warm and effective drying room for all our gear, and the brekky was fab - a choice of styles (japanese, western, pancakes, bread based etc). We had the Japanese choice and it was hearty, healthy and fresh. Near wonderful restaurants - if you stay here make sure you try Banpuku for great ramen and udon, which is just 50 metres downhill from the lodge on the right, marked with a little lantern and sign. It's super local, tiny and not even on Google Maps yet but was incredibly delicious and cheap. If you are thinking of staying in Nozawa Onsen pick this great locally run pension - the hospitality, food and service was wonderful!
Cons: The only SLIGHT inconvenience for some people could be accidentally walking past it - but then again, that's part of the charm! It was a tiny bit hard to find from the street, it's up a driveway around the corner from Pure Nagasaka. However, once found it was a perfect location between the lifts and main street of town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We've stayed in a number of places around nozawa onsen and the greater Nagano area for ski trips. The wafu Pension was by far our best stay. The location is ideal, the rooms and large clean and comfortable and the staff is wonderful. The ski Centric focus and facilities (dry room, ski locker) were a huge bonus. We look forward to visiting again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is the kind of family-run place where you are taken care of. Our daughter was sick and the staff made her some broth and delivered it to us. Breakfast is delicious. The room with the loft was perfect for us. Thank you for the wonderful stay!
Cons: We couldn't find anything wrong with the place. It is a bit of a walk up the hill, but then you are closer to the slopes.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Loved the traditional Japanese breakfasts. The dinner we ordered was delicious and excellent value. The staff were really nice. I want to stay at Wafu Miyazawa again. Pro-tip: rent a yukata to chill in, and don't forget to use the on-site hot bath.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service was excellent and helpful

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Incredibly friendly staff, amazing hospitality. Traditional style beds were more comfortable than I expected--we slept great. The breakfast was a real treat.
Cons: Ensuite bathroom was small, but I've come to expect that everywhere in Japan. Sitting on the floor in the dining room was a bit uncomfortable for a westerner like me. They brought us the low seats with backrest when we asked, so that was great.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: very helpful staff. quite close to the main street so lots of food options!
Cons: a little far from the ski lift/gondola, walking up a slight hill with snowboarding gears everyday may not be for everyone
7.9 Good
Pros: Yukiko was a charming and very helpful hostess. The onsen was a unique feature for a hotel
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is located within 5 minutes walk from the main street in Nozawa, and 10 minutes to the walkway to the Hikage ski area. Very convenient location and a decent onsen right opposite the Ryokan. The hotel staff was very helpful. She gave us all necessary information through email before our arrival and when we checked-in to our room. She picked us up and dropped us off at the main bus stop so that we didn't have to drag our three big luggage around. The room itself was spacious and well-lit.
Cons: Not a major problem and it was clear on the site when we booked that there was no shower room inside the guest room, but it would be more convenient if there was. Compared to some other hotels in the area, this ryokan is slightly tucked away so might be a concern for people who need to carry their own ski equipment to the ski area.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owners and staff. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Great natural Onsen .
Cons: It took me a few nights to get use to the traditional Japanese bedding but after that, quite comfortable.
7.5 Good
Pros: Staff
Cons: No Private shower
7.5 Good
Pros: Breakfast was large Japanese style.
Cons: No en-suite bathroom. Open space shower Restricted breakfast times No flexibility in checkout
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, genuinely traditional style Japanese Ryokan, with own Onsen and close to several of Nozawa's famous public Onsens. Breakfast good.
Cons: No real complaints. Is a bit of a walk to ski lifts, but that is balanced by being a quieter part of town, which suited us.

7.9 Good
Pros: This inn is VERY close to the lift making it very convenient for skiing! Its about a 10 min walk from the main stretch of shops and restaurants. The owner was very welcoming and gave us a map of the city and a 10% discount to rent gear at a shop nearby. When we returned from a day out, the owner's wife brought us a small plate of sliced apples - and also sent apples with us when we checked out. Be aware: the bathrooms and showers are shared and the rooms are comfortable, but basic. The room we booked had tatami mats throughout and we slept on futons. (there are some western bed rooms available) This is a great small place to rest your head while you enjoy skiing and onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Could walk to the main gondola in under a minute. The staff were so helpful and nice. Was very clean
Cons: Small pillows
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and high standard of cleanliness
Cons: The property was excellent
7.1 Good
Pros: The location is absolutely brilliant. 2 mins walk from the main gondola.
Cons: Overpriced breakfast. All a bit disorganised, in terms of check in and out as well at the bathing and breakfast times.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hosts are great! The room was comfortable and everything was really nice. It's a budget option but I think it's one of the best. Beds on the tatami mat were super comfy.
Cons: You can only use the shower between 3:30pm and 9:30pm. As someone who has a morning shower I found this really frustrating!!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner picked us up from the bus station and helped to get to the hotel - they were very helpful and kind! Highly recommended! Room was heated very well compared to other hotels in Japan on winter.
Cons: Warmer onsen room (floor), but that is just how Japanese do onsen.. :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great, only 2-3 minute walk to the gondola. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The wash facilities are nice and clean. The owners gave us a lift to the bus station with all our bags which was much appreciated !
Cons: The showers are located downstairs. No problem for us.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese inn (guest house). Manager and his wife were very helpful and accommodating.
Cons: It's location was a little far from the centre of the village.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owner and staff are all super helpful and nothing is ever a problem! Rooms are are in a traditional style and comfy. Thoroughly enjoyable stay and will be back!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Traditional style. Good breakfast
7.9 Good
Pros: The location The service, staff and owner very polite and obliging. The onsen Rooms were comfortable in the traditional Japanse way. Close to restaurants and bars. Close to transport Close to town centre. Close to ski slopes.
Cons: Would have preferred a private bathroom and toilet. They had a 11pm curfew - which was not compatible with younger generation. No cereal option for breakfast or lactose free option. Toilets had a bad smell of urine - might have been a plumbing problem.
7.5 Good
Pros: Very good position, close to one end of the slopes. Large rooms, with a sitting area close to the window, and nice views. Did not try the breakfast, but as others have said there is a close by bakery which is awesome. We also used the owner’s service of pre-buying the tickets for skiing which was very convenient and a little cheaper
Cons: A bit run down, looks a bit old and you can’t say it is charming at all. It is very clean but still in the toilet there is a persistent smell of urine, I am sure they are doing all they can.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner went above and beyond for any request and was extremely accommodating and welcoming. The drying room for snow gear was efficient and there is plenty of storage downstairs for your skis/boards. The room was a lovely traditional design with strong heating and comfortable beds. We were more than happy with the hotel and the proximity to the nearest chairlift made access convenient. Breakfast was delicious and was a great way to start the day.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had two traditional rooms on the third floor with stunning views and a little alcove seating area in each. Mattresses, pillows and heating were great. The onsen is small but the water was lovely and hot. It was a 2 min walk to free ski shuttle bus, 12 minute walk into the centre of town and 4 minute walk to the chairlift. The staff were lovely and the owner uses a translation app which is very useful and often entertaining.
Cons: We were hoping for a traditional Japanese breakfast when we paid for the breakfast option. The breakfast was OK with a fried egg and croissant but also some random things like jelly, a cube of plastic cheese and cabbage. There's a wonderful Swiss bakery about 3 minutes walk away if you want a western breakfast.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, away from main road and traffic yet very close to main street and gondolas. The sweetest, kindest and most helpful owners! Our flight was delayed by 1.5h so we weren't able to make it to hotel as arranged, Qantas didn't apologise but hotel owner understood and didn't charge us for the 1st night that we had to stay in Tokyo instead. When I asked for help with bus and train stops to our next destination (as they were in Japanese writing)6 nights later ( Yudanaka, Shibu Onsen), the lady owner kindly translated the stops to English and than felt that it was all to difficult and offered us a ride - unbelievable! We were so very grateful!!! Instead of traveling for hours we had hours to enjoy walking around Shibu Onsen until our check in time, really can't thank you enough, it was raining all day! The breakfast is outstanding, so many different ever changing dishes, a joy and a real treat to wake up to! Our room was so beautiful and so warm, very stylish Japanese which we very much wanted, generous room size, recommend this hotel warmly to all! You will not regret it!We can't wait to return! Thank You Kindly For Everything! It was such an amazing experience!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely host who was extremely helpful. Less than 10 min walk to lifts and only a few minutes walk to one of the public onsens. A nice japenese breakfast each morning (along with toast, cereal, coffee and juice). Also a beautifully presented property.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic food and super friendly and helpful owner. Second time staying here and just as good as I remembered! Food was even better than the first time! Make sure you try out the dinner. Owner is an amazing cook.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place to stay! Our room was very spacious, bed super comfortable to sleep in, best & tastiest breakfast ever. The entire place was spotless, very clean. Our host Satski was very friendly and helpful and speaks well English.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Satsuki san was a wonderful hostess for our visit, and the meals we enjoyed at the Inn were exceptional. Very clean and well laid out... a wonderful experience for the whole family.
7.5 Good
Pros: The bath and shared shower was very traditional
Cons: One day had a stink beetle in the room and had to remove it without killing it, which was alarming especially because it was on my sleeping 9 month old face!!! Otherwise, wonderful, just slightly long walk to Hikage area (where I had childcare booked) Her English level was just okay, enough to get by, but still very minimal/basic.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My hosts, Mitsureiro and Satsuki, were so generous and kind and pleasant to be with. I injured my knee whilst I was there and they did everything possible to assist me with getting to the doctors and ensuring I had everything I needed and kept me so comfortable - I feel indebted to them. Food was first class Japanese cuisine

Pros: Very good staff. Nice breakfast. Clean room.
Cons: Bar closed earlier than scheduled but there was a bar across the road.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Close to ski chair lifts. Nice deco. Clean environment. Friendly staff.
Cons: Full curtain coverage would be better. Trash bin in the toilet was not available.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: breakfast is good and bed is good too, can enjoy a good sleep!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were super friendly and really went out of there way to accommodate us. One of the experienced staff members, Hamish, was particularly helpful and took all our gear up to the bus stop and look us out boarding one afternoon. The coffee was from a proper barista and always good. Special praise to Sam for the best coffee award . We had a very functional bath and shower along with toilet in our room. The bed was so comfortable. Cooked breakfast every day if you wanted it, and bar open at night with table football and pool available. There was a bar restuarant and beer on tap. 7 min walk to ski slopes and about the same to all the major restaurants. Large boot room for storage and heaters on overnight so you always had dry gear by the next day. Even had your own area for your ski stuff.
Cons: I think we booked pretty late so we had room 312 which is at the top of the stairs so it was pretty noisy in the morning and early evening with noise coming up from the common areas at the foot of the stairs. I am sure if we had booked a bit earlier and asked for a quieter room down the end of the corridor they would of sorted it. We have ear plugs so no great drama to us, and my wife would like to get up when she heard the coffee machine, so no big deal really.

7.5 Good
Cons: Several times over a 1-week stay, other guests returned to the hotel late at night through to early in the morning (11:00pm through 3:00am), making no attempt to be quite, in spite of being requested to do so. Hotel management was reluctant to manage the issue.
7.9 Good
Pros: Old and dated but clean. The rooms are very large and the staff very friendly and helpful. Its a fair walk uphill to restaurants and bars but a short walk then board to the lifts.
Cons: The bedspreads and towels very very worn and old
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location .great staff went out of way to help
Cons: Busy on weekends
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Spacious rooms with couches/lounge area. Short walk to ski lift. Nice small onsen area. Kind staff picked us up from bus stop.
Cons: Breafast wasn't the greatest. 15-20 minute walk for any other eating options. Would have been nice if they had a laundry facility. Property is rather dated, bed and bedding was not so comfortable, but sill well worth it for the price.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: No.
Cons: Room is dirty, breakfast is bad. I stay in this hotel for 5 night, but the housekeeping just tidy up my room only for 1 time.
2.9 Mediocre
Pros: The Onsen
Cons: This hotel is predominantly for Asian tourists and not a place with much atmosphere. Staff were helpful and nice but I couldn’t use the restaurant and the room was freezing. They did have an Onsen though
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic staff Couldn’t have been more helpful Generous sized room
Cons: Wifi poor in some areas of the hotel
7.9 Good
Pros: Helpful staff (but would help if you know more Japanese of course)... close enough to “town” and the ski field without being in the crowded area. A 15 min gentle uphill walk to the “main” ski entrance/town area, lovely at night with towering snow walls on each side of the road! Small onsen, room serviced daily, vending machines and convenience store (no fresh food/fruit/veg). Fresh robes for onsen daily. Green tea and boiling water in room. Part-mountain view, depending on which building/room you may have a full view. General location/outlook good, 2 min walk to “ski-in/out”. Excellent heating, windows open for fresh air. I unfortunately forgot to book for breakfast or dinner over my 5 days so don’t know about these. Large board/ski drying room downstairs.
Cons: Could do with a freshen-up... new carpets and couches would make for great rooms. Very small bathroom but all keeping in with budget pricing. Caters to a few tour buses so understandable that all is not “brand new”.
7.5 Good
Pros: beautiful views from the room. Almost all guests were Japanese.
