Horrible experience at pick-up. Had to wait for over an hour to get a car, sitting on the pavement. Alamo did not have the cars to cover the reservations. Manager gave me, and others, a free tank of gas (by telling us to return the cars without filling up the gas tank) as an apology for the mess at pick-up. That was considerate, but, when i dropped the car off i was given no receipt from Alamo. When i checked my credit card statement, I saw that Alamo had charged me nearly $70 more than the rental agreement. Clearly, that was for filling up the gas tank that I was told to return empty as a courtesy. I sent Alamo an email two days ago about this. NO response so far.

They were VERY uncooperative with working with airline cancellations--to the point of cancelling our reservation when we could not pick the car up in Kona Hawaii due to being stuck in LA because our flight was cancelled,m

Pros:

Staff was friendly, very clear about the pickup and dropoff process, even though I didn't pick up my car from Enterprise (per instructions from the rental agency)

Cons:

I wish they'd had the car I'd reserved ready. Originally they tried pushing a crossover on me and even the car I got was not the one I reserved. Given how expensive gas is in Hawaii, I reserved a compact on purpose, and was disappointed to not receive one.

Pros:

Helpful staff and a spotless interior of the car. The line moved quickly once we got moving, and the car worked great with great gas mileage.

Cons:

It was booked for enterprise which was actually closed and all joined the same office at budget. None of the airport shuttles show that logo, but a few had the noted of enterprise on the doors.

My wife had 2 tires going flat. She took the car in to switch the car and was told budget didn’t have the same car and up graded her with $10 extra a day. We were renting for 60 days. Not impressed

pickup overall was pretty bad. very long lines with very slow checkout process. stood in line for a good hour before being helped. then because of a short staff, the person helping me had to leave to help other people who were dropping off cars or had other issues after checking out. staff was super friendly just stretched really thin and process to check out (even though I completed all information ahead of time by scanning QR code on bus) was really slow

Only problem was that the pick up process was between 90 and 120 minutes. The wait line was about 30 minutes. The person behind the counter was stressed out (new employee) and it took about 90 minutes to get my vehicle. Drop off was easy (5 minutes). And they billed me exactly what they quoted me.

At first it seemed it was going to be a long wait at counter , but KOA Budget was well staffed with experienced employees; which moved the line. We received our Jeep and headed out. Shortly after leaving we noticed the AC not working as it should and returned the vehicle. Again service was quick and easy to change vehicles. Thank you

Airport fees and local taxes should be included in the pricing for all car rentals, hotel bookings and flights. The Hertz at KOA hit me up for a $204 airport fee when I picked up the car.

In general our rental experience in Hawaii was fine. Pick up was crazy due to the amount of customers and not enough rental agents. However, the agents themselves were very pleasant & professional, despite several disgruntled customers. Our rental was a brand new model, was clean and waiting for us after 90 minutes in line. Would rent via Kayak/Hertz again.

I always thought Hertz had higher standards than other rental car agencies…. Rented a car in Kona Hawaii. I was given a 2019 car with over 33,000 miles. Disappointing. And what was even worst? The safety inspection for this car had expired 11/21. I rented the car in December… so, I was driving illegally until I was able to go back to the airport and switch cars. The agents response? “Oh. That must have been an oversight. You didn’t get stopped, did you?” I was lucky and had not been stopped by the police, but I can say one thing…. No more Hertz rentals.

Didn’t even get the car. Ended up running over to enterprise to get a different rental. First, shuttle bus didn’t come, then super long line. The worst! Will never book with them again

Pros:

They were friendly as they could be. I tried to keep clean but Hawaii has alot of sand!!

Cons:

I had to wait for almost 2 hours to get the vehichle, it was not a 4x4, they did offer to change but after waiting I wasn't in the mood. Gas was only 1/4 tank full had to fill up the next morning and last to days change oil light came on.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. I had to modify the contract in the middle, and they gave me the same rate and was very flexible.

I reserved an ECONOMY car and was given a Dodge Charger, a high performance car. I had to spend almost $100 just on gasoline for those two days.

I stood in line for 1 1/2 hours to get the car. And when I got in the car, I found out they had rented the same car to someone else. They upgraded me but when I drove away I noticed the tank was only 3/4 full.

Staff was friendly and helpful. We were having to wait a long time while they cleaned a recent return that was supposed to be ours so they just gave us a larger SUV that was already cleaned and ready to go at no additional cost.

Cons:

The key fob to our Jeep ran out of batteries on the 2nd day. As a result, had to get the car towed and exchange the car. While that process was fairly smooth, it effectively blew the entire morning. At the counter, the agent told me that the Jeep's key batteries commonly run out after 4 months. He also told us the trick on how to get the Jeep started again. Had we known, it would have saved the hassle of the tow.

We were downgraded to a car we didn’t want. We reserved a Kia Soul but were given a Kia forte. The batteries in the key fob were drained and the key fob didn’t work. I had to manually lock and unlock doors. When we asked for a receipt when we returned the rental the representative at Avis was rude and unhelpful. I still don’t have a receipt for the rental.

I paid for insurance when booking through KAYAK and was then told there was no insurance on the car. This was an unpleasant surprise after a flight. Travelling with a baby (after a flight) I didn’t have the luxury of time to go through emails and booking details to find out where the confusion (or dishonesty) was. Turned out I bought separate insurance not linked to Avis and the car through KAYAK. So I ended up paying twice and the overall deal was a lot more expensive than it should have been. The Avis attendant also wouldn’t stop chatting unnecessarily so I couldn’t concentrate on the business of getting the car asap and my family to our accommodation. The car was OK but not clean enough but I guess acceptable for a rental.
