10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our experience at Kashiwaya Ryokan was absolutely perfect. The place was impeccable, rooms were super comfy, staff was genuinely welcoming and the facilities were fantastic. It is a very romantic retreat for couples.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: They have 3 beautiful private onsen rooms for customer. Its nice and convenient.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect! The food was amazing and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The three outdoor baths were so relaxing. Beautiful atmosphere! Can't wait to come back soon!
Cons: Nothing, everything was perfect!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I love it that the ryokan is located at a place of natural beauty in the countryside, and is also accessible by shuttle bus service which plies by at regular intervals. The cool forest air, hotsprings, peace and tranquillity, and idyllic natural beauty make for a rejuvanating retreat at the ryokan. The outdoor hotspring baths for private use are lovely. The kaiseki dinner meals are beautifully prepared and presented, and are sumptuous treats. The dinner and breakfast meals are wholesome and filling. My stay at Shima Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan has been a delightful and rejuvenating experience. I am grateful to have been able to enjoy the accommodation, meals, and amenities.
Cons: I admire the staff for their attentive and dedicated service ethic. My suggestion regarding an area for improvement at the ryokan to consider making the walls sound-proof. As the walls are not sound-proof, movements (i.e. from the shifting of furniture during housekeeping services, quick footsteps along the corridor) could be easily heard during the activities of the day. It would be easier for guests to enjoy a nap during daytime if the noise is minimized.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional. Perfect place to relax and have a change of pace. Food and service were both excellent
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 1) The staff is very friendly. 2) The outdoor private onsens are great. 3) Great view from the balcony and the hotel is tastefully decorated. 4) Both breakfast and dinner are good and beautifully presented.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: great food, the dinner is always a delicious adventure, the japanese breakfast always the best u can get in japan...presumed u like it...but then, why going to japan anyway? the private outdoor onsen are all worth using them...beautiful simplified japanese style. shima onsen itself is pleasently not very touristic...which is definitely a plus in my book

Pros: The staff were amazing and so kind. The room was fantastic, and the food was really luxurious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place was really amazing....almost stepping back into time in some areas. Rooms were amazingly comfortable and beautiful to stay in. Food and service were excellent. The older parts added to the atmosphere of the place. Am a fan of the film spirited away and that was the reason I chose this ryokan...it did not disappoint!
Cons: Nothing...loved everything about the place
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I am an American and really, really enjoyed the traditional Japanese experience and plan on doing it again.
Cons: Nothing, I enjoyed everything.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent atmosphere, very traditional Japanese style, waiter was attentive and helpful, excellent outdoor hot springs. Studio Ghibli animated movie spirited away bathhouse exteriors were inspired by this hotel including red bridge.
Cons: I would have liked to known about the extra tax I was charged. I was expensive for me (but it was still a good experience.)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Onsen facilities are very impresed. Meal and services are great.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful, historical hot springs. Amazing food, the best we had in Japan. Great service.
Cons: Hotel was a bit worn. Indoor hot springs not as nice as outdoors.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese Onsen (bath) that will blow you away. If you are a fan of Miyazaki's Chiro (Spirited Away) this place was an inspiration for that film and has the red bridge that features in the film as well as some of the buildings. If you are not prudish about sharing baths with complete strangers and want to enjoy a real Japanese experience this is for you. It is not cheap though but well worth it for 2-3 nights. It is a bit away from the normal tourist areas in Nakanajo (Shinkansen Bullet train to Takasaki then local train to Nakanojo).Great rooms and breakfast and dinner included. The dinner is a multiple course delight in Japanese food - not to be missed.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful experience, and a helpful staff

9.0 Excellent
Pros: it was a little off the beaten track so we experienced more of an authentic Japanese holiday, all the other guests were Japanese. it means times for meals were less negotiable but the authenticity and outdoor onsen more than made up for that! it's in a little village so it's great to avoid tourists, so also not many shops or public transport nearby as a result.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The surrounding views are superb. The meals were great.
Cons: Nothing.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Hot and clean inside and outside public baths. Excellent evening and morning meals. Very friendly and helpful staff and great service! We had two young kids and I would recommend the place for families.
Cons: We were very satisfied with our stay. I note that the place is old and worn so there were marks on the walls.

Pros: It was wonderful
Cons: Everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was an quiet, relaxing spot in the mountains. The room had a nice view towards the mountains, and it was nice to sit and read and relaxe there. There was two private onsens (one outside that could be reserved, and one inside which could be used if it was available), it was also outside onsen (one for men and one for women). The onsen was warm everything looked clean. The rooms were clean, and the breakfast and dinners were plentyful. You will not go hungry staying here. So many dishes per meal, and it was served in a private room with a view (and they cleaned the room when we were eating)
Cons: We have nothing negative so say about this ryokan. It was very good value for the money. But it can be noted that there is not much around the property. We didnt have a car, and the bus service is very limited. But this was reflected in the price, as the prices in the nearby onsen resorts in Shima was triple the price from what we payed here

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have visited several different ryokan throughout my trips to Japan. Toshimaya impressed me very much. The building itself is beautiful and well attended. The house only offers a couple of rooms which makes for quite an intimate atmosphere. In Japan staff is usually very polite and offers an exceptional service. However the wonderful people at Toshimaya took “great service” to a whole new level”: They cared about the smallest things and offered a very personal experience. I can honestly say that I never felt more welcome one taken care of then in this ryokan. The two outdoor Onsen offered stunning views over the river right behind the building which made them especially memorable.

Pros: My mother got sick during our stay at Toshimaya and the staff was extremely caring and helpful throughout! Dinner was exquisite. The onsen were really nice as well, and the area was great for going on hikes!
Cons: Breakfast was at 8 or 8.30 in the morning, which is way too early for me to eat (I did it anyway, because it was so lavish, but what should have been a great experience ended up being a bit of a struggle
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice staffs and onsen facilities. I felt comfortable with the service provided
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The service was awesome. I like how the breakfast and dinner was prepare. The dinner has many dishes and the staff introduce each dish. The local ingredients was fresh and tasty. The private hot spring with open air bath was very comfortable and the scene of the mountains really help with relaxing. It was a great get away from the city and it has a traditional Japanese feel. We really enjoy the whole stay. Sleeping on the floor was a first and the open air onsen was an amazing experience.
Cons: Staff English could be a bit better but usually they are able to make simple sentence and get the main point through which is what matter the most.
