Pros: Having stayed in a high-end ryokan the previous night, we wanted to be a little more budget conscious. This place had caught my eye as it had a picture of Golden Retrievers on their marketing photos, and looked to be very family friendly. These turn out to be the owners' dogs, and they were a HUGE hit with my children, as were the Christmas decorations, which were already in place. This is a western style purpose-built Pension, with large family rooms and ensuite toilets. Possibly about 8 rooms in total. We had 4 single beds in our room, and still lots of extra space for a small sofa and a tv. The beds were very comfortable, with heavy duvets to keep out the cold. There was a heater in the room, but we turned it off at night and had a slight breeze coming in. Everyone slept very well. There was a shared indoor onsen, and an outdoor onsen (rotenburo), a few metres walk into the garden. This was available for private use only, and on a first come, first served basis. Max 30/45 mins per family. It was lovely, with landscaping and a view of the autumn foliage. Heaven. The day we arrived heralded the first snowfall, so it was much colder than we had expected, and totally thrilling for us all to see the autumn leaves AND snow at the same time. The owners, a young couple with their first baby, had this establishment running like clockwork. The wife and her mother are the chefs, and we had the most incredible dinner, with soup, bread, rice, roast chicken, grilled fish with cream sauce, salad, dessert, and a lovely bottle of white wine (additional charge). Most residents were families with small children, and the children all got together to play games after the meal. It was an incredibly friendly and inviting place. Breakfast the next morning was also huge and delicious, so all in all, an unexpectedly wonderful find. We noted that the ski slopes were very close by, and plan to make a return visit there later in the winter.

Pros: this hotel owns by a family and all of the members are very friendly. I appreciated the excellent food and warm welcome in this hotel. staffs are friendly for checking information as this is the 1st time of us to ski in this area. very thoguhtful to pick us up from station. I highly recommend the super hydrogen spa as its a private spa with views.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had been told that the Minakami area was definitely worth a visit, and since we like to stay in more rural, authentic Japanese places, this ticked all the boxes. With just a handful of rooms, this feels very intimate. The owner, who also is an accomplished Shakuhachi player, told me that the hotel had been renovated recently, and it showed. The room we had was a suite, with Tempur mattresses on a raised platform, and the children had futons in the living area which were laid out during the evening. The decor was traditional, but VERY stylish, with quirky elements we loved. Dinner (kaiseki banquet style) and breakfast (fish, rice, pickles, salad) were traditional, and the dinner was particularly exquisite, with an autumn theme to the presentation. Our 7 year old was offered a slightly more child-friendly option. This type of food is not for the picky eater, so don't choose to eat at this establishment unless you are prepared to try everything. There are no alternatives. After dinner the owner performs on his shakuhachi, and then guests have a chance to try the instruments themselves - this is a unique experience. The hotel also offer an in-room massage, which we booked. The masseur was very good, and used the shiatsu technique for 45 mins for myself and my husband. Very relaxing! The hydrogen bath was very unique, and is only available for private bookings (which we did both evening and morning of our departure). There is also a shared onsen facility, with male and female separation. In a tiny hamlet up in the mountains, near to several other open air onsen baths, and not far from the ski areas, the ropeway, and the wonderful craft and farming village of Takumi no Sato - this is a MUST, especially if you have kids. Another wonderful Japanese experience !
Cons: My husband's Tempur mattress was TOO firm, so he did not sleep especially well.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fine food, clean rooms, quiet, private, wonderful spa.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about the place - the wonderful and generous hosts, the onsen facilities with the amazing view of Mt. Tanigawa, and the exquisite meals (the kaiseki dinner was one of the best meals we've had in Japan). To top it all, the father of the family, a Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) master builder and player, performed before the guest after dinner. Moreover, the Ryokan surroundings in the lovely Tanigawa onsen village is perfectly located if you plan on hiking in the Minakami area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All the family are very friendly. The ryokan is nice, room is big, we enjoyed very much the private hydrogen onsen. Above all we very much appreciated the meals, they were just perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The six of us stayed at the room on the top floor, and we couldn't have asked for a more comfortable and spacious arrangement. We were greeted with a sumptuous and nutritious breakfast every day, before we'd make use of their special "super-hydrogen" onsen (followed by a nice nap). Yado Kanzan has the most generous hosts that made us feel at home throughout our 3-day stay. Regrettably, as we had nightly engagements outside of the hotel, we missed their traditional Japanese dinners and flute performances, but we cannot wait to return and enjoy the full experience soon.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A lot of thought has obviously gone into this amazing property, from the private hydrogen bath to the Michelin standard food to the beautiful decor. The owner loves his job and it shows. We've stayed in ryokan that cost much more and weren't half as comfortable or stylish
Cons: Absolutely nothing

The personal outdoor bath is fantastic, view on nature. One of the rare Ryokan who accepts to do vegetarian and vegan menu! You will definitely have a great time there, it's just like a dream for one night.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything about our experience - from the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the extremely friendly staff and whisked off to our room to get settled. Everything about Bettei Senjuan is impeccable, from the beautiful grounds, to the rooms, and stunning onsen (both the public ones and the in-room onsen). However, the food was by far the highlight of our stay - everything was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. This is hands down the best hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The only negative was having to leave!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful staff, food, room and view. We stayed two nights and had wonderful snacks provided in between meals on our full day. Food is beautifully presented, the dinning rooms have stunning views, our staff member Narumi was very happy, helpful and lots of fun. We really hope to stay here again!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It’s all that you expect from a ryokan experience. Staff is very friendly.the breakfast, lunch and dinner were excellent. Very welcoming and excellent service
Cons: Some of the property old equipment is not fully removed/fixed. For example old shower handle that no longer finctional. Hole on the wall from door handle.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is located in a secluded quiet area but still is only 10 minutes drive from JR Minakami station, You felt the hotel is different from arrival. It is well desigined to have a luxurious feel; supplemented by the very friendly and helpful staff. The room is spacious, tiday and clean; with a private open air onsen which The qualify of food in both dinner and breakfast are very nice.
Cons: Can't really complain. If I have to pick one, the public bath is nice but rather ordinary. But this is not really so important as most rooms in the hotel have its own private bath.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were very roomy and comfortable and the onsens were amazing. Also the option of private onsen is always a plus. Lots of snacks and beverages available.
Cons: The dinner provided could have been a little better, however it was only around 1200yen so this could have been due to miscommunication and translation issues.
5.4 Okay
Pros: It was a decent ryokan for the price, but not much more.
Cons: The staff clearly treated guests differently, which didn't bother us too much, but was still a bit weird.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a wonderful start to our 12 day easter vacation in Japan, with an onsen mountain experience of peace and relaxation. Arriving in the morning ,with 7 hour jetlag, we made our way by taking trains from Narita airport to Tokyo and further north to Gunma area. The hotel came to pick us at the local train station in a small shuttlebus. Then we were shown into their large lounge and served te and enjoyed the mountain view. It was a wonderful introduction to traditional Japanese life style. We had 3 rooms all with japanese furniture. 1 room had a private onsen hot bath in the room, the other 2 rooms had private toilets and then shared the use of the large onsen bath, which had a choice of 2 hot baths inside and 2 outsides. ( seperat bathes for women and men ) All our our rooms had large windows with a wonderful view af the river, forest and the snow-covered Tanigawa-dake / Mount Tanigawa. The food and service was an special experience. By staying 2 nights, we enjoyed 2 different Japanese dinners, with numerous courses, served in our own dining room, with many esquiste details, everything arranged and served with respect for tradition, beauty and taste. We enjoyed one Japanese breakfast and one western breakfast. We were the only european guests, but the hotel was busy with Japanese guests. All the personel went out of there way to communicate and make us happy. They were very helpful and kind towards our 1 year old. Some of us took a visit to the top of mountain Tanigawa, and the rest visited a neighbor town to participate in the Nurmata Sakura festival with blooming cherry trees.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about our stay at Minakamisansou was great. The staff, environment and private Onsen were great, but the authentic food was the highlight.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Room was very spacious, clean and came with a lot of furnishings that made our stay very comfortable, our favourite was the in-ground kotatsu that was great for lounging around. - The view that looked out into the hills and forest from the room was awesome and made our mornings very serene. - Breakfast and dinner were both Japanese Kaiseki and were delicious and very filling. - Staff were very hospitable, attentive and did whatever they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. - Both the in-room open-air onsen and the public onsen were amazing (However, it was hotter compared to others places). - They provided complimentary self-service coffee which was V60 drip coffee where you'd grind your beans fresh and pour hot water over it, it was actually pretty tasty. - A good place to stay if you're planning on exploring the area via car (we went snowboarding at a few nearby snow resorts), there's a lot of outdoors activities to be done in Minakami.
Cons: - The room we stayed in had a faint smell of cigarette smoke, which I'm guessing they allowed smoking in our room previously. - It would be hard to get around the area if you don't have a car.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved my one-night stay here. The driver picked me and a few other guests up from the train promptly at 3pm and we arrived at the propert by 3:15. From there is was magical. As I was the only non-Japanese traveler, one of the English speaking hosts gave me a specialized tour and English directions on how to use the spa and the other facilities. He was incredibly patient and was able to answer the 2-3 questions I had. Loved the free massage chairs, the space was incredibly quiet the entire time (I rarely ran into other guests), the food was amazing, and the Onsen (I only used the half outside one) was great. I would love to go back again.
Cons: Nothing!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: 1. The dinner and breakfast was simply awesome. Best we had in our 5 days Japan trip this time round. 2. Staff were really friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was snowing quite heavily when we arrived and steps leading to hotel entrance was covered in snow and ice. The staff were amazingly strong and carried all our luggages into the property. 3. The room was spacious and very clean. Futons were comfortable. 4. The property was beautifully designed and very cozy as well. 5. Parking on property is free. As it was snowing overnight, they even cleared all the snow from our car the next morning so we could just jump in and drive off after check out.
Cons: 1. The public baths were very small. Good thing we had our own private bath in our room.
6.3 Good
Pros: The hotel onsen, the outdoor bathroom, the hotel is lovely

Pros: The beautiful setting in nature. I especially love mountains and forests so the setting was ideal. The hot springs were especially good and most enjoyable.
Cons: It was all great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The most wonderful experience we had on our trip to Japan. We only wished we had booked to stay another day. The evening meal was intimate and special as was the breakfast. It was my partners birthday and the staff made her a card and made her day
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was a beautiful traditional stay. The room itself had everything I needed and I personally had a view on the river! I was prepared to check in and ask about everything in Japaness, but the lady welcoming me to the Onsen and explaining everything had AMAZING english and was super helpful. Don't hesitate to ask questions - it can be confusing the first time but it's worth it! There was a mix of a buffet abd very traditional food for dinner. I wasn't used to all the tastes but even so I apreciated being able to try and taste everything and be able to experience new tastes! And even if you have a sensitive palate like me, there were still some simple things like fried noodles and dumplings that you can fill yourself up on. There are also drink (including alcohol) and ice-cream vending machines, in true Japanese fashion, if you need a pick-me up at night! The baths themselves were spectacular. I was able to bathe and relax in hot water under the dark sky, while looking over onto a lively river below. It was such a beautiful, and spiritual even, experience! I'd recommend it to anyone and would love to go back :)
Cons: There's not much more I would've personally wanted! I have crossed paths with a mouse during the stay. I find them cute so it didn't bother me, but I know it can be upsetting for some. I will say, I did stay in the oldest building and the Onsen is pretty much by a forest in a rural area, so things like that, including moths etc are unavoidable. But I will say there weren't any cockroaches or any bugs thag would be super upsetting, and none in my room. If it makes it up for anyone, I was able to meet a lovely frog on the way back from the open air baths! A sweet lovely baby!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The service is superb
Cons: The bathroom taps are affected by the hot water.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Onsen I great
Cons: Food is terrible. Came5 years ago was good. Now mass catering and dirty and bsd quality. Worst food in.japan. v unusual as japan prides itself on cleanliness and good quality even in simple places. This is way overpriced for experience. They need to update facilities as the location is brilliant.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Food was yummy (especially the shrimp, fresh fruit, and roast beef) The shuttle bus was super convenient and I love that the hotel gave me specific directions to get through the train station, including photos. Very reassuring. The onsen is just gorgeous. Stunning landscape. Loved having it to myself at 6 in the morning though it was never overly crowded throughout the day. Great style room with wonderful view.
Cons: I was disappointed that all of the baths no longer permit traditional nude bathing. I wish it was optional. I think the communal shoes (both indoor and outdoor) could use some disinfecting/cleaning. They smelled a bit musty and were dusty and old looking. A later check out would be ideal.

Pros: Everything is nice and beautiful. There’s also a trail that leads to a lookout.

Pros: Just for the beginning - Wow! This hotel or rather Ryokan was one of my greatest experiences ever. First this is an incredible area. so quiet and relaxing to be in this place and especially the variety of the Onsens was so good in this stunning nature area. I wasted a lot of time there for purifying and healing my wounds and my skin. Really an authentic experience to discover the old Japanese culture accordingly the onsens, the structure's style of the building that is very clean and polished. the meals were so delicious, off course the dishes were from the Japanese cuisine. And above all - the staff. Yes, the staff cared to every thing. from the beginning of my stay when the nice receptionist showed me every kinds of facilities and amenities of the Ryokan and during the meals they made for me specific instruction for the dishes that I can eat because I have some allergies. Defiantly they were the most welcoming staff that I have ever seen.
Cons: Nothing. I recommend you to arrive to this Ryokan without any fears.

5.4 Okay
Pros: The food was pretty good.
Cons: There isn't much to do if you don't know how to ski. The onsen baths were fine, and the first day I used it, it was nice. But on the second day, lots of tours groups entered the hotel, and because there was a huge crowd at the onsen, the experience of a leisurely, relaxing bath was practically impossible. There were lots of children in the hotel, so maybe it's good for families with young children, but I wouldn't recommend for families without young children.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect. From the staff to the food to the view. All is more than what we imagine we could get. I regret staying for only one night.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really friendly staff, excellent facilities, great view from the room, shuttle bus to and from the JR train stations, stunning outdoor (and indoor) onsen, breakfast and dinner included in accommodation fee (and the buffet food is delicious and made on local ingredients), ski/snowboard rental and school attached to the hotel. Amazing snow!!!! And they really are on the slopes, we would clip into our snowboards outside the hotel and snowboard to the bottom, we'd snowboard all day then unclip and walk back inside the hotel. There are so many beautiful things to say about this hotel. And thank you Ichi-Sensei for teaching us to snowboard, love Geoffrey-san (and Natalie-san). If we get the chance to return, we will definitely book here again.
Cons: During peak times, lifts inside the hotel can be slow.

Pros: This hotel has free bikes to borrow to ride into the cute town. The mountains around it are beautiful. The onsen is nice though didn't provide conditioner. The massage chairs are great!
Cons: It was a little pricey for a family room, particularly considering we did not get meals. The room was very large though and had it's own little kitchen.

Pros: Room was larger than average, clean and we'll maintained.
Cons: Breakfast was lacking variety and not worth the money.

Pros: Service,food
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yumotokan is by far the best place I have stayed in Japan on this trip. While it may not appear like a traditional 5 star hotel, this is a very old style guest house, the service is 5 star, and I felt I was getting the true Japanese experience. The staff were exceptionally kind, and I forgot to order a meal at the time of booking. I did so on the day, and it was not problem. I am a vegan and again it was not a problem at all. The meal was the absolute best I have had in Japan, home cooked with wild vegetables from the area. It was amazing. Breakfast was again incredibly delicious. Very traditional Japanese food.
Cons: It was absolutely perfect, no complaints! I wish I could have stayed longer. I will definitely go again to this beautiful guesthouse. The onsen was fantastic. The food was absolutely delicious. Nothing was a problem at all for the staff and the owner for us, they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, and very welcome!
