Jolyon's Boutique Hotel - Cardiff - Bedroom
3
9.3 Excellent (648 reviews)
C$ 144+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Jolyon's Boutique Hotel in Cardiff (Butetown), you'll be steps from Cardiff Bay and 4 minutes by foot from Wales Millennium Centre. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The service and the food.
Cons: The street level noise from the carnival and the pub/restaurant crowd.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful little hotel, spotlessly clean, staff extremely helpful, plus we managed to get an onsite parking space.
Cons: There was nothing I disliked
4.0 Okay
Pros: The bathroom was updated.
Cons: SPIDERS. Big spiders. And other insects. All over the ceiling. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well. Also because there are bars right outside the back windows. Definitely not what is advertised. It's also "self-service" so there isn't staff there 24/7. The area also isn't as great as advertised.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is cooked to order and uses very good ingredients - room is tidy and clean and bathroom was spotless and everything worked - nice touch that they had included a desk fan given the warm nature of the weather. Also it is next door to a really good Curry House - the Duchess of Delhi ... not the cheapest, but one of the best I have visited ... also next door to that is a Craft Ale pub
Cons: Nothing really - all was good - parking can be a bit hit and miss (if you arrive after 6pm it is free but getting a place is tricky).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was in an amazing location. It was sumptuously appointed and although I feared noise, nothing was heard. Staff were great and friendly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is the cutest hotel I’ve ever been in with such cute little details, including a bowl of sweets and welsh hot chocolate! Beautiful decorations and bathroom and ideally located on Cardiff Bay! It’s incredible! Staff were really nice and chatty and I just loved it. All of it. Diolch!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was comfortable and clean and i liked the fact that they provide bottles of drinking water instead of just tea and coffee as some people do not drink hot beverages
Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location. Spotlessly clean and comfortable. Jolyon the owner is a very friendly and accommodating host. The two ladies in the kitchen were friendly and helpful.
Cons: Whilst our room was almost perfect, it was very hot as we found it difficult to open the window. Also, the bed whilst being very comfortable creaked rather a lot.
6.3 Good
Pros: Nice touches like water in rooms replenished daily and sweets and biscuits as well as tea and coffee. Breakfast was good too. Hosts was helpful with info and advice on local facilities. Very clean bedroom and bathroom
Cons: There was no privacy in the rooms without shutting all the blinds/curtains and having lights on. Sheer blinds would have done the trick and not expensive. The hotel looked as if it had seen better days and people had given up a bit with it...e.g. broken caps on screws in bath sides, old fitting for blind left on window frame, plants outside hotel on steps dead and wilting, downstairs breakfast room looking a bit tatty, car park had some weeds and rubbish in it. Not their fault but very noisy when we were thereat night and early morning Good double glazing and some decent air conditioning or fans (small ones in room were not up to the job) would have improved this. Bath had pitted surface and had obviously been damaged
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The location was excellent in regard to entertainment, sightseeing and restaurants in the area.
Cons: We weren't warned that Sainsbury's would be offloading(with their engine running for over 3/4hour at 6am in the morning right outside our window(which becasue the room was so warm had to be kept open all night). Also the dray men were offloading barrels for the pub located next door, again at 6am in the morning(our stay was a Sunday evening). A suggestion would be to bring ear plugs.

Little things missing e.g. tissues, and providing the same liquid soap for body and hair and no conditioner. 8.8 Excellent
Pros: The room was lovely
Cons: The air con/ heating would not go up, we froze most the night as the air con was on. Also fire alarm going off in the morning as a drill which caused a lot of stress
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I liked our view of the bay and the hotel was lovely.
Cons: It's the kind of hotel that takes itself too seriously. It was billed as a five star resort, but the only difference I could see between it and any other hotel in the states was the bidet in the bathroom.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: View from room and wife really enjoyed the spa.
Cons: Nothing.

Cons: Didn't find anything I didn't like!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The bed was extra comfy. I was given an upgrade. Thank you so much!
Cons: There was nothing I didn’t like
7.9 Good
Pros: The location over the Bay was lovely. Good selection of bars and restaurants just 5 minutes walk along the bay from the hotel.
Cons: We arrived to a junior suite, which was located just feet above someone's wedding. Making it very awkward to go out on to our small balcony. It was a small room and nothing like the photos. It looked more of a standard room not a Junior suite. One quick call to reception and thankfully we were upgraded to a much nicest room. The original room was not worth £276 and we were very disheartened when we walked in. The car park was a nightmare. We got locked in along with another driver as it wasn't clearly stated as full and you could not get out without a code! We rang and waited by the barrier for over 10 minutes before someone came out and let us out. No clear instruction that you have to check in first and pay before entering the car park. Plus a Full sign is located at the very bottom of the entrance which you have no chance of seeing at all as its lower than your car bumper. Also doesn't help when people have left their cars on the round about infront of the entrance to check in. After this very stressful experience we parked in the public carpark opposite and had to pay £24 for 24 hours. Not cheap. But after 1.5 hours driving, we were just relived to get out the car.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The bed were so comfortable
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All the staff were helpful
Cons: Dressing gowns need to be bigger

8.3 Excellent
Pros: I liked that it is very big, spacious and the staff are welcoming. The bathroom was clean, well lit and the pressure from the shower head was also very good. The service was prompt and polite. I would recommend someone to stay here.
Cons: I believe the decor could be updated because the hotel looks dated.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It's tired and needs a refresh. Doors bashed and carpets a bit worn. Looks like it hasn't had any decoration for a while upstairs and is dated
Cons: Room was dark
7.5 Good
Pros: Pleasant and helpful staff and comfy bed.
Cons: Not able to eat in the hotel that evening because it was fully booked and because of the hotels location, which is isolated, we had to travel a few miles to get something to eat.

Pros: Lovely friendly staff and very nice breakfast at reasonable price. Beautiful location, on a golf course and nice balcony in the room
Cons: The decor a little tired n could do with freshen up
7.1 Good
Pros: We were really happy with our room and facilities in there.
Cons: We thought the reception staff could have definitely been better. We felt check in and check out were harder than needed. Our keys stopped working before the second night and had to get them re done. They tried to charge us for two breakfasts we only had one. I’m still waiting for an invoice. Just a bit poor. For a lovely hotel with great facilities, they need to invest a bit more in their reception staff!

Holm House Hotel - Penarth - Building

8.9 Excellent (611 reviews)
C$ 208+
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Holm House Hotel in Penarth, you'll be a 3-minute drive from Cardiff Bay and 8 minutes from Principality Stadium. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage. Event facilities at this hotel consist of conference space and a meeting room. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Hotel was very clean, the staff were very friendly and the facilities were great!
Cons: Amazing bath in the room however no bath products, e.g. bubble bath / bath bombs at all...
6.7 Good
Pros: Great breakfast Good location Nice eating and resting area Nice garden
Cons: Our room was satisfactory but was fairly tired looking decoration wise. The bath panel was water damaged and in poor condition. Bathroom tiles in bath area had black mould in some of the grout. Bath silicone also black in places and shower screen leaked water through onto the bathroom floor. The living area ceiling was yellow stained in places through a leaking ceiling at some stage. Carpet stained in some areas. Skirting boards again in places need repainting. Outside the apartment there was a machine type generator or air duct thingy-bob that was noisy until late in the evening which hindered our peace and quiet. On the whole to be fair we did enjoy our stay however, having had these issues our expectations were not met given we had read high praise of this hotel. It may be that our room on the ground floor may not reflect the condition of the other of the remaining rooms which may be of a better decorative standard making this hotel worth the cost it charges per night/week. The breakfast however was outstanding so that was a bonus for us. One morning though we sat half dressed in the living area and all of a sudden the window cleaner began cleaning our windows which felt somewhat imposing and insensitive. On our arrival, hoping to use the pool we were informed that the pool ceiling had almost fallen in to the pool which had to be repaired urgently and as a result prevented us from using the pool on that day. However this problem was resolved extremely quickly and as a result we could use the pool the following day. Penarth is a lovely location to stay at but given some disappointments at Holm House we wouldn’t look to return to that particular hotel again regrettably
9.6 Excellent

Pros: The food was lovely, the service was extremely friendly and the overall experience was great.
6.7 Good
Pros: The room was comfortable, and clean, the hospitality was good. The location was very scenic.
Cons: The meal was bland. I was offered a free desert or drink but I declined. The location was out in the sticks so I had no phone use. Only emergency. The room only had one tea bag. The next day no tea bags or milk. I did bring a couple of my own and had to ask for milk.
6.3 Good
Pros: Most things
Cons: We had the 1 st night we 4 people drinking very noisy till 1.30 so we did not sleep well when I told manager she seemed put out as if I was making it up but it spoiled our 1 st day with not enough sleep The is I’m sure a cut off point at 12 pm for noise . She did say she spoke with couple 2 couples off there head
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I was made to feel welcome from the minute that i arrived there. Staff were very friendly and very approachable. Thank you for the lovely beef sandwich that was left for me to take away due to me leaving early before breakfast, it was delicious
Cons: Nothing. Everything was very good and very friendly staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The friendly and helpful staff
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Rooms were quite small, but very clean and cosy. Place is quiet and minutes away in a car from Barry island if you fancy a walk in the evening. We were there mid week so no usual noise :) Breakfast was very well cooked to order, a shame there were no alternatives to cows milk for my morning coffee.
Cons: Dinner was very nice, but very very salty. All three dishes that we have ordered were too salty, to the point that I could not finish a really lovely pie.
8.8 Excellent
Cons: Booked on line only a double room available, requested a twin room if one became available. On the second night we were given another room as one had become available. Feel the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Big thank you to the staff.
7.5 Good
Pros: Lovely breakfast. Very quiet location. Friendly staff.
Cons: The evening meal I chose was not very good. However my husband had a good meal.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything at the Fox and Hounds is dog friendly ( not just dog accommodating). The staff are cheerful and helpful with a great local knowledge. They made the stay a pleasure. The food was wonderful and I only wish I could have tried more. I had something different at each meal without any issues. The value for money was also a great change from a large chain hotel. I will be recommending this establishment to many of my travelling friends.
Cons: The Fox and Hounds cannot be faulted but the ability to release the dogs in a green open area that is safe for the local farming community is difficult. I have two mastiffs and this was our only issue. We could not fault the Staff or Fox and Hounds.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was great...quiet and historic spot with a lovely old church next door. A must see if in the area.

Gowns came late late Saturday nite I mean our stay is almost over then !!! Found a total rip off for that package especially after booking two rooms and explaining it was a birthday surprise. There is also one very creepy security guard who kept following us to our rooms and insisting people were complaining insisting that our next door neighbour has called many times to complain but the room he kept telling us that was complying was our room he didn’t know we had two rooms and there was nobody in there and my two rooms were the only rooms down that corridor he kept threatening us telling us to get in our rooms because of the neighbours (our empty room) complained again he followed us everywhere he was very intimidating he didn’t need to follow ya to our floor and make up lies and threats towards us no one was bad behaved no reason to follow us and make up lies he followed ya soon as we came back to our room why follow us to the 4th floor for no reason and just hang about outside our room he was outside our door hanging around for a long time very very intimidating for a group of girls for that reason we would not stay again !!!!

Cons: Breakfast location in rather chilly conservatory. Check-in/check-out times was initially a bit of a challenge but owner was easy to adjust timing.
6.7 Good
Pros: They were very helpful in our arriving later than their check-in times and communicated promptly. The location in the St Fagan's district is superb
Cons: 1. They could have reminded us that they did not have card facilities on arrival 2. The host was not aware that the pub next door stopped serving food at 8:30pm and thus when we went there on their recommendation we could not get dinner. 3. It was strange that we had to vacate the premises after breakfast until late afternoon. 4. Although not unfriendly, we struggled with a general cool reception (this could easily be improved with hugely positive results).

Pros: Great welcome and general friendly approach of owner. Water provided as well as hot drink stuff in room. Good breakfast especially the bargain supplementary cooked. Nice to have chairs in the room. Easy walks into different areas of the city through Bute park including accessing the water taxi to the bay. Free on street parking. Shaver adapter plug quickly provided when needed.
Cons: The ensuite door opened into the room. Hanging space and case stand under it awkwardly in a corner. Ensuite door and ceiling grubby. Curtains didn't close properly and the blinds didn't seem to work. Half the bulbs in the main light didn't light up. No shaver socket or hairdryer in the room.

Cons: Wifi did not work needed to pay cash as cash machine was not working

Pros: The location and the toast but just not enough of it!!!
Cons: Breakfast!!! I don't eat cereal or anything on the buffet. Asked for toast and was given one piece!!! After a long wait no more was offered so I asked and again got one piece!!! Was told there were three more sets of people due. As I was about to leave having given up on asking for more toast as it wasn't offered a bowl of fresh fruit was bought out!!! Seemed as if it had been held back for certain guests as it was ten to nine by then.

Pros: Superb hosts and location. Unfortunately the bathroom and room to some extent were DIY mishaps. The water provided had the lid of when we entered the room. Ensuite was poorly finished considering we paid over £300 for 3 nights
Cons: English breakfast was good, continental poor. Cereal in big pots with all the old crumbs half way up the container, clearly not been emptied for some time.
