This boutique hotel is inside a Victorian home with uniquely decorated rooms. Guests can access Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park less than three blocks away.

Guests can enjoy coffee and a free newspaper in the morning along with a continental breakfast in the morning nook. Each guestroom is unique with amenities like built-in Jacuzzi tubs, floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms, flat-screen televisions, and king- or queen-size beds. The windows offer views of the Sacramento skyline and homes in Mansion Flats. Bathrooms are filled with fine toiletries, powerful hairdryers, and tubs and showers. All junior and master suites also include comfortable bathrobes, mini-refrigerators, and double-size Jacuzzi tubs.

There are numerous dining options near the hotel including Asian food at Bangkok at 12 Thai Restaurant, American comfort food at Jim-Denny’s Lunch, Japanese cuisine at Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, and Mexican dishes at Chando’s Cantina. Guests on the run can stop at Naked Coffee for morning beverages while those looking for fine dining later in the day can visit Aioli Bodega Espanola.

Pros:The exterior of the hotel was very attractive. The room and bathroom were spacious and the bed was very comfortable.
Cons:The staff at the front desk was polite and helpful, although it was hard to hear him. We slept well in the large, comfortable bed, and enjoyed the spacious bathroom. The hotel was very quiet, even though there were two weddings in the ballroom while we were there. The decor from start to finish was unfortunate. The carpet and walls are midnight blue, and the carpet is spotted with 5" diameter cream-colored dots. In our room, one chair was a deep-acid green, as were the couch pillows, but the couch was brown and tan, while the curtains were a purple-grey. Topping it off were matching camel-colored armchairs. The bathroom is tiled in foot-square mauve marble-look-alike tiles. The room had a powerful "floral" scent. Although we opened all the windows and ran the fan, it seemed every time we entered the room the smell was as strong as ever. I looked around for a plug-in room freshener but could not find one. The sink faucet leaked and the sink did not drain properly. (I reported it so likely it will be fixed.) There was no information about use of the television or where to find stations.

9.7 Wonderful
Pros:I have always loved this building, and nice hotel rooms for less than $150/night are in short supply in downtown Sacramento. The Sterling gave us outstanding value for a spacious room with enormous Jacuzzi bathtub and beautiful four-poster bed in a gorgeous historic Victorian era home. Check in and check out experience efficient and pleasant, with flexibility on a little extra time for check out. I would definitely stay again and recommend to friends with caveats below.
Cons:There is on the street parking but it is metered with a two-hour limit after 8am or before 6pm Mon-Sat, so you will get a parking ticket if you sleep in. The street gutter was filled with leaves, making it a little messy for shoes and luggage. There is a $16 city lot just a block away... But it is a block away. A valet service would be ideal. As other guests have commented, some room elements such as sinks are beginning to show signs of age, but they did not detract from the outstanding value of our room.

Pros:Rooms were lovely, staff friendly (but a tad forgetful at times), location not near nightlife, but if you're looking for a place to stay with character, this is it.
Cons:Continental breakfast was the worst I have had in any hotel. I mean ever.
