Pros: Room ,location,food
Cons: Nothing
9.7 Excellent
Pros: This is a luxury hotel with a wonderful location right next to Unzen's most famous attraction, its hot water jigoku (hells). It is also a very convenient, short walk from the bus center and tourist info center. The rooms are surprisingly large, especially by Japanese standards, with excellent views and all the amenities. The staff speaks English and is very helpful. The onsen baths are delightful and the food is excellent. What more could you ask for?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Hotel filled with tradition yet newly renovated.
Cons: The fish in both dinners was mediocre
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Big room,good service
Cons: Too small toilet ,dressing room
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The service was spectacular
Cons: The location was a bit remote
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hotel management was very understanding of our situation which happened on the day of check in. Thank you. Both dinners exceeded expectations - highlights included abalone one night and lobster the other night. Fantastic, Japanese painting-like scenery from the room. Terrific room setup and very clean. Hotel was fully booked but you don't feel it - enjoyed the privacy. Great lounge areas. They also provide postcards for you to send to family and friends.
Cons: Breakfast on the second day was not as good as the first.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel with outstanding facilities. Like the Volcanic water bath available in the room and the top floor club with free drinks and massage chairs. Beautiful view at 360 degrees. Rooms are spacious and of high quality design and materials.
Cons: Food is good but outpriced.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Feel so luxury n exclusive once step in the ryokan. Right next to Unzen hell national park with great view from our room n from the rooftop bar. Self service free flow alcohol drinks n juices from the rooftop bar which is enjoyable.
Cons: The duvet a bit too thick for not a winter season, the pyjamas provided can be more comfortable n more fashionable
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good food Some of the staff members were very polite and friendly (but not all sadly) and the hotel has a pretty special location right on top of Unzen's hell
Cons: At this price point, service could have been a touch better/more flexible. It was already known I had my child with me yet the room did not include a yukata for him - I had to ask for it and turns out they had it. Also, we had just purchased some fine Japanese peaches and the staff weren't willing to have the kitchen cut it for us during the breakfast/dinner (which were both meals included already in our rate). In both above examples, I have been to enough higher-end ryokans which would have gladly taken care of these properly. There are no public onsens at all, good ryokans often have very nice ones. The private onsen in our own room didn't have what I consider good enough privacy standards as there is a public path nearby that people can look into the room from

9.0 Excellent
Pros: It's a big Ryokan with beautiful views from the balconies and a lovely garden. The food is excellent (expensive but worth it) and the staff superb. The rooms are comfortable and equipped with everything you need. They were helpful and made my stay special. I loved the view of the mountain from my balcony. The outdoor onsen is lovely. The ryokan is literally two steps away from Unzen Hell
Cons: It's a very big cement unattractive building, so although it meets all luxury ryokan standards inside, it's a tall cement block with lots of rooms. The people next to my room smoked a lot and the smell unfortunately was very strong.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 2 dinner and 2 breakfast meals were included in our 2 day reservation. Meals were excellent, the same staff person was assigned to care for us for all 4 meals plus 1 lunch meal that was not included. She was a very helpful person and conversed with our party quite a bit. 3 of the 4 of us were Japanese and spoke to her constantly.
Cons: My only complaint is the same one I have with every onsen my wife and I have ever visited. The slippers and the sleep wear is not sized to fit me. I am 280 lbs which is not nearly as much as a sumo wrestler. But they did have any larger sizes, so I guess no sumo wrestlers ever visit this famous onsen. I carry my own jinbei to wear to meals and to the onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staffs were extraordinarily welcoming and helpful. Welcome drinks and large Japanese garden with some small hot springs were quite impressive (photos attached).
Cons: All the written information (menu, instruction, etc.) is in Japanese. Especially, in the public bath, it will be really helpful if there’s any information written in English (at least!).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location of the hotel is good. Breakfast is tasty. Onsen is nice.
Cons: Nil
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location to enjoy the thermal springs and little township where there were shops. Thoughtful staff who were very eager to please. Short driving distance to ropeway.
Cons: Breakfast and formal dinners were rushed. The courses were presented with insufficient explanation of ingredients. We were overwhelmed and lost as to which items we were to eat first. Maybe staff was eager to get his job over and done with. Maybe it was winter. . There werent much fruits on the menu.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is very quiet with the scenic spot just next to the hotel. My room got upgraded to the upper floor. It is fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The service was really good. The private onsen could be booked without charge. It is really nice.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Typical Japanese
Cons: No English Unknown 300yen surcharge?
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The bath was marvellous! The stuff was very helpful and kind. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully served.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very good location and nice onsen! Good view.
Cons: Nothing much!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: After checked in to the hotel, we were surprise by knowing that the hotel had been established more than 300 years, even the previous Japanese Emperor been visiting the hotel. We reserved the private on-sen (open air) with fees and enjoyed the night view while soaping inside the hot water. Unzen is one of the famous on-sen city in Japan. Some people might not like the smell of the on-sen due to rich of sulfor mineral.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is convenient. Close to shops and bus-stop Staff helpful and friendly
Cons: The meal not what I expect.... portion is just enough
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely traditional ryokan just a minute away from Unzen Jigoku. The room was incredibly spacious and it was really nice to find local snacks and teas every day after the morning cleaning and the evening bed setup. Nice Japanese breakfast in the morning, that was included in our booking. Loved the private family bath! Worth the 1500 yen. The staff was super nice and helpful as well :)
Cons: The area is quite isolated, and whilst it’s great to explore the Jigoku and pond nearby, no much is left to do. Fortunately we had a car to explore the Shimabara peninsula! The main problem though was that the majority of the restaurants were closed (maybe because it’s January?).
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We enjoy the onsen and is big and well facilitated.
Cons: The room is a bit old.
7.9 Good
Pros: We slept incredibly well.
Cons: The man at the front desk told us the wrong time for the bus and caused a 3 hour delay. Obviously not intentional but a little annoying.

5.0 Okay
Pros: spa view
Cons: Room wallpaper
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel has a lake view and onsen. The onsen was luxurious and the lake view was amazing. The staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so accommodating. I arrived two hours before check-in, but they gave me tea while they quickly prepared my room. I spoke to them mostly in Japanese since I knew a little, but they were kind when I didn't understand, and translated words for me. They even translated a bus schedule into English so I would be able to read it. The meals I ate there were amazing delicious experiences. (Make sure you pre-arrange meals ahead of time.) They even offered a loaner umbrella when it was raining, and told me to just leave it at the bus stop and they would come pick it up. The staff went above and beyond my expectations, and it made my stay very enjoyable.
Cons: My only suggestion to travelers is: some of the cheaper rooms don't have a lake view, so if that's important to you, double check that before you book.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We traveled to Shimabara and Unzen Onsen for the hot springs and was not disappointed! Azumaen is a short walk from Unzen Jigoku, which surpassed the photos we had seen. The staff was fantastic, very helpful and friendly. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room that was very comfortable, spacious but cozy and perfectly fit the location. The view from our room was amazing.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was ok.
Cons: Extremely difficult to communicate with the team. Spent a lot of time trying to get information and getting help from team. We were very upset when we could not get effective help when we told them we lost our money. The hotel really lacked security. 1. There was no security for the lady's onsen and anyone could access the onsen from the elevator. 2. The glass door leading to the garden and beach was kept open throughout and anyone can access this door. 3. Luke warm water in vacuum flask provided in room so we could not make tea. Thus, requested for change of hot water. The staff accessed our room to replace a new pot of hot water into room when we were not in the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room, although not spacious, was clean and comfortable with everything we needed which included a small fridge, hot water for tea and a large bathroom. The onsen too was very large with lovely views over the lake and beyond.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice hotel. The room is regular. Nothing too special- two beds, bathroom which is quite spacious relative to japanese hotels.
Cons: No tea bags and coffee in the room. Only macha. Smell of the kitchen next to the room.
7.0 Good
Pros: Indoors onsen is good. The hotel is by the lake, nice view.
Cons: The western style rooms (both 315 & 316) are a bit weird. Outdoors onsen is not attractive and the water temperature is not high enough, perhaps due to the rainy day.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really enjoyed staying here. It feels like 90% resort hotel and 10% youth hostel. We aren't Japanese but it felt like everyone else was. Spacious comfortable room. Good buffet breakfast. Very helpful staff despite language difficulties and when we left they kindly gave us a lift to the bus stop in town. The outdoor baths are nice with a view of the trees. There's a small shop by reception where you can buy snacks and even pot noodles.
Cons: It's true the room had a mountain view but you have to ignore the car park in the foreground. The hotel is a bit out of town, so be aware of this if you arrive by bus. It's not really that far; we walked it with backpacks on in 10-15 mins. As well as walking along the little road there is a path through the woods which you can use.
5.0 Okay
Pros: clean n spacious room
Cons: far from town. open air bath is not connected with public bath. have to put on clothes again after taking public bath, then wash up , take off clothes again to use the open air bath.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Onsen with wonderful view. Also very good sunset view from the room.
Cons: Too high pillows . Noise in the corridor can be heard clearly, and our room is next to the kitchen elevator.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We were warmly received at the property, and as we were early, were directed to the free leg onsen along the sea front. There is minimum parking at the property. The room was adequate, and the attached toilet was a bonus. The highlight was the open air onsen which overlooks the sea, and faces west. Hint: Checkout the sunset time, book the onsen for that time, enjoy an experience that would otherwise cost you and your partner an arm and a leg. No other facilities are available at this onsen. Meals are very reasonable at an eatery about 100 meters away,
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything in this place was excellent, the staff extremely accommodating and friendly, the room adorable, the baths, indoor and outdoor that you can book privately, I didn't take the meals but in spite of that, I could borrow a toaster to fix my breakfast. I have come several times in Obama onsen but this is the place I prefered. Thanks to the wonderful staff.

Pros: I liked their kindness for serving non-seafood breakfast. They also have colourful & lovelier yukata(s) for ladies only. Otherwise, staffs are extremely kind and welcoming for quests.
Cons: Bathroom in the room is extremely old and small. I just couldn’t feel like taking a shower or bath in the room. Additionally, electrical plugs are not enough or visible in the room.

Cons: The wifi connection is weak.
6.7 Good
Pros: The staff were extremely kind and helpful. The place itself was quiet and a little run down. The town was very quiet ... a bit run down too. We enjoyed the privacy of the Onsen.
Cons: The fridge was very smelly and unable to be used ... but that was no problem as the 7/11 was across the road.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful onsen and friendly staff - comfortable rooms with sea views and balcony
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was really good, bus stop at the door step and supermarket and convenience store across the street. Hot spring was comforting!
Cons: Nothing in particular.

Pros: The private bath house was exceptional for me and my partner. The hotel is family run. I think they did much better than many established brands out there. Well done! I will definitely go again if I am in Kyushu.

4.2 Okay
Pros: Easy to find, the onsen was nice and views on the green area relaxing. Comfortable rooms.
Cons: The hotel has huge communal space but it seems that days of splendour are past and now seriously lack mainteinance. Rain drops from the ceiling on the way to the onsen.

Cons: The wet and stormy weather!
