Top tips for finding the perfect Vienna hotel

For the best romantic hotels in Vienna, check out the Innere Stadt (inner city), where you will find the high-end Hotel Sacher Wien, which has has a grand finish and is within walking distance of the Burggarten. If you’d prefer a modern-looking hotel, try the DO & CO Hotel Vienna, with its glossy finish and stunning views of the city.
If you are planning on visiting the Schönbrunn Palace, then you can opt to stay in the Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn, which overlooks the nearby Schönbrunner Schlosspark, or look into the Fünfhaus neighbourhood, which is just a few stops from the palace by underground.
The Innere Stadt, the first district of Vienna in the old town area, is divided into four sections, historically denoted by the city gates. To stay in this area, consider Pension Neuer Markt near the Roman Museum. You will also find a number of museums and historic churches nearby, including Stephansdom (St Stephen’s Cathedral).
Each year, Vienna hosts Design Week, which brings together designers from all over Austria and the world. It is hosted across a number of venues throughout the city at the end of September, with a different theme each year. Why not opt for a design-led hotel, such as the high-end House of Time in Leopoldstadt.
If you’d like to stay on the banks of the River Danube, which travels from Germany through 10 countries including Austria, along the Donaukanal off-shoot, you will find Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom, which offers stunning views over the river and the city centre. On the edge of the Danube itself, you will find the Meliá Vienna, with 5-star views over the river.

Pro " I will start by saying that I bear some responsibility for the overall negative rating that I am giving the hotel. Had I researched more and read their mission statement, I probably would have just moved on and selected another property. The hotel is totally updated and is located at the foot of the main shopping area and close to the West Bahnhoff. That being said the updates and atmosphere are definitely targeted for the millennial crowd so not necessarily fully appreciated by a middle aged couple. It really felt like an upscale option for those who would have been staying in hostels a few years ago. I would advise those over 40 to think twice before booking here. Check-in: There is no check-in in the traditional sense. There is a round workstation in the bar/lounge/reception area where you use a table to enter you info and a room key is printed out and delivered through a slot. If you want two room keys you need to get assistance from a staff person which we did without any problem so while different this was not a negative. There is also no check-out needed and your invoice is e-mailed to you after you have left the property so it makes for an easy departure and you don’t need to worry about being delayed at check-out. "
Con " Bar: Outdoor rooftop lounge area was nice but trying to get a drink at the bar proved to be an experience on our first night in town. There are a variety of seating options but apparently no table service. After sitting for several minutes without any service I went to the bar and found some drink menus (with a very good selection of cocktails by the way) which we then looked over and I went to the bar to order. The bartender who had been making drinks a few minutes earlier had changed into “load the dishwasher” mode and proceeded to spend five to ten minutes putting dirty glasses in the dishwasher while never acknowledging the presence of myself and another customer waiting for service. Finally another staff person came behind the bar, took the other customer’s order and made her drink. He then called me down the other end of the bar to take my order. I gave him our order and he said that will be 17 euros. I said to charge it to my room and he said that was not possible. Turns out due to the lack of check-in/check out the only thing on the room bill is the room. Everything else must be settled at the time of the transaction. While this led to more dissatisfaction on my part I said fine and paid in cash. Then he said thank you and that his colleague would get my drinks in 4 or 5 minutes. I suspect that since we ordered from their extensive menu, he was afraid to try and make the cocktails himself, but he did not go over to relieve the previous bartender of her dishwasher loading to allow her to make the drinks. After a minute or two a third person went behind the bar and asked if he could help me. I said that I had already ordered and was waiting for someone to make my drinks. He looked at the ticket put it back down and had a side conversation with the second person and finally one of them made the drinks and we took them to our room. I should say that two nights later I stopped back to order two drinks and that time it went much more smoothly. "

Pro " Hotel is nice and clean "
Con " The room was in the ground floor, so that it was very noisy and no matter if the window was opened or closed. Dirty windows. No water in the room. But in general I enjoyed staying in the hotel. 50 m from the hotel there is a Turkish small shop which is opened on late Saturday, and even on Sunday. "
