7.9 Good
Pros: The rooms were fine, including the one with private onsen. Room size was good. Dinner was good.
Cons: Nothing.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: A nice place to get away from it all. Very relaxing hot spring. The town is very cute and small and quiet (so don't expect any big city entertainment). The breakfast and dinners were excellent but make sure to book in advance if you want dinner on your first day. Very friendly staff and really gracious lovely owner. About 45 min public bus ride from Kummamoto city which has excellent tourist facilities and historical sites and scenic spots.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a lovely women's bath, with an outdoor bath attached. Also, it is located right on the river. The road from the hotel to the town was full of traditional buildings too.
Cons: I really enjoyed my stay here. The only thing to note is that there were a few small bits of damage to the shoji screens and tatami. But they weren't really noticeable and I expect they will repair them when needed. The breakfasts were fine, but not the highlight. (My stay did not include the dinners.)
7.0 Good

Cons: nil

5.4 Okay
Pros: In general, the hotel offers standard Japanese onsen, breakfast and dinner, you can choose stay without meal. Most of staff can only speak little English, but one of gentlemen can speak fluent English, he tried to explain all details to us and ensure we understand, thanks a lot. He also let us know there is BBQ of candyfloss offered upto 9:00pm.
Cons: When we booked the hotel, we know there is around 10-15 min from bus stop. When we walked between the hotel and city centre several time, we felt that it was a bit far away. For onsen (hot spring), there are indoor and outdoor, the water may not be hot enough for us but it is clean. Normally, in Japan, the male and female onsen will be changed in next day, then we can experience the difference, but there is NO change. For breakfast and dinner, the breakfast and dinner were just average, especially the dinner was under our expectation. It was not exquisite and special enough. Traditionally, after dinner, the staff will arrange Japanese bed (tatami), but there was no such arrangement. I hope it was communication issue, they misunderstand what we said so they do not make the bed for us. In Japan, especially in onsen hotel, they are proud of providing an excellent service to guest. Fortunately, I can try how to make the bed by ourselves. In general, it is clean, comfortable and good stay. Thanks a lot.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A modern version of a Japanese-style Ryokan (family inn). Located next to the Kikuchi river in a quiet part of town. The hot springs inside the hotel was very convenient. With cotton kimonos provided by the hotel, you could go from your room to the dining area or hot springs. The hot springs had both inside and outside soaking pools. They had a pool table and ping pong table and a small gift shop. Within a few minutes you could walk to the old town for a tour of the O-Sake factory, public foot spa, shrines and temples, lantern museum, etc. Very relaxing stay.
Cons: Yamaga city doesn't have the same level of public transportation as the big cities, but that is to be expected for a somewhat rural location.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff are great and nice. The room is big but you need to setup your own futton. The Onsen is good enough. A bit of a walk from the main attraction though.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Onsen(hot spring), the food, and the fact we could play ping pong & pool in the lobby as well as toast marshmallows. Also, the staffs were helpful in every way.
Cons: The view could've been better if it was on the river side. We had the city view.
