FAQs - booking Switzerland flights

  • Do I need a visa in order to fly from Toronto to Switzerland?

Passengers flying from Toronto to Switzerland do not need a visa if you plan to stay for 90 days or fewer and you are traveling for tourism or business. However, make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of your proposed departure from Switzerland.

  • Is it worth it to purchase a bargain ticket from Toronto to Switzerland that requires an airport change in a connection city?

Some of the cheapest airline tickets available from Toronto to Switzerland require an airport change in a connection city. For example, when you fly on Lufthansa, you need to change from Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Luton Airport (LTN) in London in order to catch the next leg of your flight aboard easyJet. Before purchasing such a ticket, make sure your itinerary leaves you enough time and that you know how you will make your way across the city from one airport to the other.

  • Does the airport in Toronto have an area where my kids can play as we wait for our flight to Switzerland?

At Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), you can find a Play Area in Terminal 1 near gate D24. At this indoor playground, your kids can entertain themselves as you watch them from nearby seating. And best of all, they can burn off some excess energy before you board your plane for your flight to Switzerland.

  • Can I rent a car from the Zurich Airport (ZHR)?

You can find a wide selection of car rental companies at Zurich Airport (ZRH). Once you deplane, follow signs to the Airport Shopping area on Level 1. Some car rental agencies you can find represented here include Enterprise, Avis, Hertz, Budget, SIXT, National, Dollar, Thrifty, and Europcar.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Toronto to Switzerland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Switzerland with an airline and back to Toronto with another airline.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Switzerland

  • Morning departure is around 13% cheaper than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Most flights from Toronto to Switzerland will depart from Toronto's primary international Airport, the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). However, it is possible to find a few bargain flights that depart from the lesser known Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ). YTZ is located on the Toronto Islands in Lake Ontario.
  • Both Air Canada and SWISS offer non-stop flights from the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Zurich. These flights land at Zurich Airport (ZRH) and allow economy passengers to bring one carry on board. On the Air Canada flights, you have the option of upgrading from Basic Economy to Standard or Flex.
  • You can find flights from Toronto to the Geneva Airport (GVA) that depart from the John C. Munro Hamilton Airport (YHM), an airport situated just outside the southwestern border of Toronto. For example, you can catch a SWISS flight that stops in Montreal (YUL) and Zurich (ZRH) and allows economy ticketed passengers one carry-on and one checked bag.
  • When you fly from Toronto (YYZ) to Basel, you will find yourself at the crux of three European countries: Switzerland, France, and Germany. You will be landing at the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL), a hub for easyJet, Swiss Air, and other airlines.
  • If you need to relax before your flight to Switzerland, you have a few options at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). You can meditate in one of the prayer rooms in either Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. If you prefer something more active to alleviate your nerves, you can pay a fee to work out at the Goodlife Fitness gym in Terminal 1.

Carry on luggage size for economy passengers significantly smaller than other airlines, so nearly all ecomy passengers had their bags taken and checked.

Had a short layover in Zurich, luggage marked expedite and short layover but still didn’t get luggage when arrived in Split until 3 days later even though husband got his.

On time flight, I requested wheelchair in Zurich , when I arrived they were no where to be found, I had one hour between flights I had to walk with great difficulty.

Far above average. The level of quality and service has really improved and passed most US carriers on this route. Go Edelweiss!

We had issues with upgrading our seats. The flight itself was fine.

Flight was late and crew were unwilling to help with information on connections. Call light had been on for 61 minutes without tesponse.

Kudos to Swiss!! My wife and I thought Swiss was like flying years back: good food service, refreshments, friendly and courteous crew! We look forward to another trip to Europe next year, and it will be a priority to hopefully fly Swiss, thank you! We strongly can say from experience - the treatment (food, drink, entertainment) in service for Economy Class is unmatched!!!

So terrible. They would not rebook me for a flight until 2 days. I had to spend so much money to get my own flight. They were rude and not helpful.

Super friendly crew. Leg space and entertainment system are below average

Flight was ok. Food on way there great a pork dish way back tuna and pasta was not good. Flight attendants were great. Wish they had more soda options like ginger ale seltzer water. Good experience overall. Worst part of trip was car rental Klass company car broke down we were on side of road late night 4 hours awful awful experience all they wanted was 500 euros for help to come absolutely horrible experience we were scared side of highway they offered zero help!

Coming from USA it was nice to be treated nice for a change. Even though our flight was pretty short we were served breakfast. On time flight with very caring staff. Please teach American carriers how to treat people.

More space between seats and in bathroom. I don’t think there was any entertainment offered. If there was, I wasn’t aware.

Every meal/snack included something with ham/pork - even the cookies had "swine fat" (which we only knew because we thoroughly checked the ingredients). There were no vegetarian options, and we had not been given the option of pre-selecting a meal when purchasing our tickets or checking in. That made for a VERY long flight. We were fortunate that we had brought our own snacks as back-up.

Waited in line for hours just to get a boarding pass which would not print at the kiosk or load on my iPhone. Waiting again for about 45 minutes to get through passport control. Poorly managed airport. The flight and crew were great and the flight was very comfortable.

I booked and paid for my original flight with E-Dreams. Also made seat selections. Got an email a few days later saying my return flight had be cancelled?? Called E-Dreams and they said it was the airline that cancelled (Sato)? Told to rebook the return flight myself? Cost was double the original flight and was booking me on the same flight as I originally booked?? Called back, the agent agreed to cancel my flight to the Azores and AGREED to a full REFUND. The agent advised me to re-book the flight on my own. Did so and ended up with the EXACT same flights as originally booked?? Have only received a PARTIAL REFUND. Still out approximately $300 dollars?? Is this a SCAM. How do I get the remaining REFUND?? Regards, Brett Parry

I wasn't able to log into the onboard wifi entertainment, but I fell asleep on the flight anyway.

Cons: "Paid for business and Seats did not recline, not was there any entertainment provided from a flight from Lisbon Portugal to Boston. This was not a business international flight although it was sold and advertised as one. Awful."
Cons: "I paid for business and there were no TVs or any entertainments from Portugal to Boston on Airbus 321. The seats barely reclined so basically I was charged for business and got a premium economy seat. They do not have a business section, never flying with them again."
Pros: "Cheap aitfare"
Cons: "On time takeoff Better food Television screens to watch movies Better selection of movies"

I was pleasantly surprised - it has been awhile since I traveled with them - other than being delayed leaving Malaga everything ran very smoothly- yes I would travel with aer Lingus again and yes I would recommended

I loved how they arrange boarding (starting with people seated in back and moving to the front). Flight crew was very polite and welcoming. Seating was ok, I felt like there was enough leg space however it is noticeable when the passenger in front of you sets their seat back.

Flight staff very friendly and helpful where possible. Late flight and travelling with young child, cabin lights remained on for the duration of the flight which was a little disappointing considering the time of the flight. Overall very happy to travel with Aer Lingus.

Short flight so not much to rate. Surprised I had to pay for a soda.

First the price I paid was excellent, my flight was full, but my seat was roomy. The one downside to the experience was they had games on the entertainment console. The guy behind me poked at my head about half the flight. I hope they get rid of this feature.

Flightl was good and on time. Only problem was the quality of the air in the cabin, didn’t appear to be clearing the air circulation.

They lost my baggage on my connecting flight and we’re an hour late so I nearly missed it

Always find Aer Lingus reliable and good value for money. Food on this flight was pretty basic and the headphone Jack at my seat only worked for one ear. Little disappointed in movie selection, limited on recent releases. Staff are okay - but I always buy a cheap ticket so not like I expect first class opulence anyway!!!

Boarding was so quick, flight was ahead of time which is great and the pilot spoke clearly and was letting people know everything, amazing, love travelling with you 😊

The vegan meal was pretty horrible tasting and the staff did not bring me breakfast and no coffee and asked. the connecting flight from dublin to bristol was much delayed.

Decent service - nice seats. Crew were not overly attentive but can’t complain overall for the money

One small complaint: people in economy frequently were coming through the curtain to use the saga lavatory.

The plane was flaming hot! Could not breathe. Everyone coughing from heat. Awful.

on plane service was excellent - we flew business class. And everything ran on schedule - always a good thing. However, the transfer is Reykyavik - both going and coming - was really crowded and confusing. It's tough enough when you're tired from a long flight - but then to push through heavy crowds to get on to a shuttle bus seems like they don't have the facilities to support the numbers.

On time and crew were good. Our seating arrangements in biz class were messed up, separated us as a couple and bulkhead seating not good for long legs.

Not much! This was my first flight with Iceland air and unfortunately it wasn’t what I have expected. My luggage is lost nothing as of yet where it was left. Not a good service at all!!

Cons: "Communication about international COVID requirements before the day of departure."
Cons: "Took far too long for drinks service into the flight. Almost 2 hours in before drinks came around to me"
Pros: "I’m a fan of Icelandair. We have only done the Saga Upgrade so I cannot speak to economy. Food is great, seats are comfy, and entertainment is great."
Cons: "I don’t really know what happened but it was over an hour for us to get our bags afterward at SFO which caused us to miss our connecting flight to LAX, so we had to wait until next day to fly. This was also the busiest travel day of the year and storms everywhere so likely out of their control. Not the hugest deal but was harder to get on connecting flight since Icelandair doesn’t have a ticket counter at SFO. Would never prevent me from flying with them again, I always have issues at SFO so avoid that airport altogether anyways- will try to go around going through there on our next iceland trip!"
Cons: "Warm bus for the transfer from one plane to the next!"

Seriously need to improve the time schedule and the plans

Great TV, easy boarding, wonderful ground crew and flight crew.

It was late leaving but made up time in the air.

Rude Customer Service at checkin, 90 minute limit in flight check in is too strict. I was in line for 30 minutes because of slow/insufficient workers. Somewhere I got to the the counter of course the employee warned me about the 90 minutes. People were cutting the lines. No one did anything.

Squeeze like sardines. ANA has much better leg room. The food on air canada was disgusting. Worse that left over microwave dinner. Like you heated up microwave dinner then saved it overnight, then microwaved it again and added nasty garnish to try to elevate but instead made it as edible as cat food.

Crew was terrific. In flight entertainment system is very slow and the touch screen can be not sensitive enough or too sensitive. It was such a pain to pause a movie in case when I unpaused it accidentally thought I presses stop. This happened 3 times. I gave up and went back to my phone for entertainment.

Everything was great. I really like how they had their safety film set up showing you the beauty of the country.

Inexperienced crew. Food was so so. They lost my luggage on a direct flight. Was flying business so my luggage was priority. Not impressed.

I liked the early check in. Flight was a bit bumpy due yo weather. Overall, everything went well.

It was awful. For a 37 minute flight time,we had 1:30 hours delay. If someone had a connection flight he or she couldn’t reach for sure. The only positive point was online check in.
