  • Opting for car hire in Stavanger rather than relying on public transport will free you from set schedules and routes and also prove invaluable when you want to get around the town outside of regular service hours. You can also reach more out of the way places in the wider area where the town is situated on the south-western Norwegian coast. The first place to head to by car is Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). The view from there over Lysefjord will remain in your memory for years. In the city centre itself, make sure you visit Stavanger Cathedral and Valberg Tower, to the north of the Market Square district. Then take yourself on a self-drive tour of the historic Gamle Stavanger old part of town.
  • The city is served by its own airport, so you can collect your car hire in Stavanger right there. You’ll be in the city centre after a short drive of 11km (just under 7 miles), as Stavanger Airport is technically in neighbouring Sola. Easy pick up although we just kind of got the keys and were wished good luck! :) took a little to find the car. But got a better vehicle than what I booked for no extra charge. Staff called to remind me to have the car back inside the drop off window or pay for an extra day, that was great. Note for Norway, if you rent for 7 days that means exactly 7 days to the minute or you pay for the next day. This remains my favorite car rental company and was happy to see that the Norway experience matched what I’ve had in the US.

Hertz claimed that we had damaged the car (scratch on rear fender). We had extensively photographed the car prior to and immediately following return of the vehicle, and could show that the alleged damage was not on the car at the time we returned it. We sent Hertz a photo to prove this and Hertz office then came back with two new claims of minor damage in different locations to the original claim, using our photo as a basis for this new claim! They are charging us over $500 for this damage as they claim the car was inoperable due to these scratches! Quite unbelievable.
