Driving in St. John's was relatively easy. Seems everything is within 15 - 20 minutes. Parking signs are a little confusing. Be careful to find out if street cleaning is happening on the street you park. There are no signs for that and no forgiveness. Ensure your car rental return coincides with your departure flight time.

The downtown roads can be a bit quirky. A lot of intersections at strange angles and roads that merge cross traffic. Need to take it slow.

Try not to rent directly at the airport (I’m not sure if there is an alternative in Newfoundland). They charge a “concession” fee.

Drive sensibly and follow the rules. The city is very nice.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in St. John's
A rental car is the perfect way to explore not only St. John's, but the whole of Newfoundland, as most of its best places can't be accessed without four wheels. There are so many scenic routes to drive along that it will be hard to choose, but driving to St. Anthony on the northern tip of the island is a popular option, as you can take your time and even stay overnight in the charming towns as you make your way there.
All the big car rental companies can be found at St. John's International Airport (YYT), which is located less than 10 km (6.2 miles) from downtown St. John's. Car rental services are situated in the Baggage Claim area of the airport's main terminal. If you're heading there during high tourism season (May-September), you should book your car in advance.
The Trans-Canada Highway connects St. John's to other cities and towns around Newfoundland and, although the highway is in great condition, you will likely encounter sharp curves while driving through these hills. Always stay alert when driving on the island, as moose roam around freely and sometimes cause accidents. Stop the car and wait for the animals to fully disappear if you bump into them.
Although traffic is quite tame when compared to other big Canadian cities, rush hour traffic (between 7 and 9 a.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m.) can affect certain areas of St. John's, particularly Parkway, which is made up of three roads funneling into a single route. Most heavy construction work takes place during summer, so take that into consideration in case you have to be somewhere by a specific time.
If you wish to drive cheap car rentals in St. John's, there are some major local roads you need to be aware of. The Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) is the most important roadway in the province, linking St. John's to other major towns and cities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador along its east-west route. The TCH traverses the city's central business district, St. John's Airport, and the Bell Island Causeway at its southern edge. The city is bound in the north by Portugal Cove Road, which runs east to west, and on the south by Kenmount Road, which runs north to south, both of which serve as major arterial roadways. Other major roads include Prince Philip Drive and Newfoundland Drive. These roads connect St. John's attractions and businesses, making it accessible.
If you’re planning to move around in St. John’s car rentals, you should know about the toll roads. The Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) are the main toll roads in St. John's. The Outer Ring Road is a key thoroughfare that circles the city on its outskirts, linking its eastern and western halves and giving access to the Transcontinental Highway. Starting at Pitts Memorial Drive, it travels west to Bay Bulls Road, then heads south to St. John's Airport. Through St. John's runs the Trans-Canada Highway, a significant north-south highway that links the city to the rest of Canada. Both toll highways provide easy access to downtown St. John's and the rest of the region.
In St. John's, the required age to access cheap car rentals is 21. Some car rental providers, however, have more stringent age limits of 25 or older. Additionally, some rental car providers have age limits on their customers, limiting the selection of vehicles available for rent. For instance, luxury cars and SUVs may be made available to customers 25 years old and older. Lastly, a major credit card, proof of insurance, and a driver's licence are all required. You'll need an international driving licence if your driver's licence is not in either English or French.

Initially when renting the car things were good. I got a pretty well new ride. The papers I received with damage etc gave no indication of any damage to said car. We were informed that because I declined insurance any damage was my problem. So a few days into my visit as I was walking towards car I noticed a dent in rear trunk area. Not noticed before or declared. I was upset someone struck the car and left. My heart sunk. I called my insurance company in BC and got the info I needed for claims. I took said car into Healys autorepair for an estimate. I returned car and admitted to the dent. Young fella took info but after discussion the lady attending went through her phone and admitted the ding was there already. I was relieved but afterwards thought you could do better. If not for her honesty would i have been charged??For Several days this weighed heavy on me. Debra Martens

I would have preferred to have the car brought to me at the terminal. I'm 65 years old and with heavy luggage it was an inconvenience to me. Likewise when I returned the car at 5:00 am.

The amount stated for booking was tripled at pickup, so Kayak never actually gave me a deal on my rental. I will NEVER recommend Kayak for deals, you guys don't make deals on price only book the vehicle.
It was fine. What they should in the St John’s location is ask where you are going to go with the vehicle. Newfoundland has bad roads outside of the Trans Canada Highway and specifically north towards St. Anthony. Putting run flats on a Mercedes on roads with potholes large enough to swallow a truck is a bad idea but renting that car is likewise a liability. We ended with a total wheel failure and needed to get a new car, an SUV, for the duration of the trip. So asking would have been a good idea.

The Alamo desk was closed so Enterprise helped with both pickup and drop off. These places are completely interchangeable.
