Driving is a bit more complicated here than in the US. Roundabouts are negotiable with other drivers and less strict about lanes and right of way. Speed limits are more complicated and roads are not straight. Light changes are shorter and there are different stages. Something to keep in mind.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Valencia
Renting a car is the best way to explore the city of Valencia, which is nestled in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The local weather is typically warm with little rainfall throughout the whole year, which provides optimal conditions for drivers. Most beautiful local beaches, such as Playa de Malvarossa and Playa de Patacona, are within easy reach, and a car is the perfect option for travelers looking to explore the coastal area outside the city. Other destinations, such as the beach town of Jávea on the Costa Blanca or Buñol (where the La Tomatina festival takes place), are only short rides away from Valencia.
All the car rental agencies, can be found at Valencia Airport (VLC). The airport, also known as Manises airport, is located 8 km (5 miles) away from the city. The rental car counters can be found on the ground floor of Terminal 1. Both terminals are located in the same main building and are well connected. If you're visiting Valencia during the summer months, make sure you book your rental car in advance as demand is fairly high.
The city of Valencia itself isn't hard to navigate, but make sure you have some sort of navigation system, as one-way streets are frequent and the medieval street planning can be confusing for tourists. Most autopistas (motorways) in Spain are toll roads, and travelers who don't hold a European Union driver's license must have an international driver's license. Automatic vehicles tend to be more expensive than manual, so if you're not used to driving stick, make sure you sort your rental car out in advance.
Because of the siesta period (a break when workers take between 2 p.m. and 4-5 p.m.), big cities like Valencia experience four rush hours: 8 to 9:30 a.m., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., 3:30 to 5 p.m., and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Driving around the coast in the summer months also means more traffic, so avoid the congestion by driving either early in the morning or late in the evening.
Valencia is a vibrant city boasting numerous beaches, such as Playa de la Patacona, located about 9km east of the city center via Av. del Puerto. To the northwest of the town, along Passeig de l’Albereda highway, you'll find La Ciutat de Les Arts I Les Ciències de València. Here, you’ll enjoy opera concerts, 3-D digital films, and cultural and scientific exhibitions. The best way to explore and appreciate all the city offers is to hire a set of wheels and create a memorable Spanish adventure. Finding reliable cheap car rentals in Valencia is crucial as it is the only way you can access the best car for an easy and exciting travel experience. Some of the cheap car rentals in Valencia include Avis, Ace, Budget, Hertz, Enterprise, and Europcar.
You might want to book your car in advance if you are planning to save more on your trip to Valencia. Luckily, you can do so and pick up your cheap rental car at Manises Airport from different Valencia car rentals situated on the first floor of the parking area just across the road from the main entrance. You can head to town via A-7 or V-30 main highway. Alternatively, use a traffic-free AP-7 toll route to get to the city center faster. If your pickup station is somewhere in the city, you can take a train from the Metro station, located about 0.2 miles from the airport.
Valencia is one of the travel destinations where your Valencia car rental size matters. Sure, you need a car large enough to accommodate all your belongings and passengers, especially when traveling in a group. However, you might want to consider the nature of the roads you are traversing, especially if you are planning to drive further away from the city’s outskirts. For example, going for a city safari, touring Albufera natural park, or exploring Calderona mountain ranges may require a 4X4 SUV with high ground clearance. For on-road tours, Valencia has well-maintained roads, and small or midsize cars with enough space for your passengers and luggage will help you navigate the A-3 motorway and other Valencia roads.

Worst ever customer service. Stupid processes. It all started w not being forewarned about needing an international drivers license! This cost us over €100 and we’ve not needed one anywhere in Europe in 5 years of travelling. Things did not get better after that. You get what you pay for.
