Pro " Bastian Homestay is situated in a sweet whitewashed alley full of beautiful flowers, including fragrant jasmine. It's about 10 minutes' walk from the Old Town where nice cafes/restaurants are located (NB: alcohol is only sold in hotel restaurants, so if you need a beer, head to the 18 Hotel). The alley is full of pretty homes, and the neighbours are very pleasant. There are a few small corner shops very close by selling snacks. Rooms and bathrooms are immaculate - the cleaners sweep under the bed, then wipe the tiled floor with a damp cloth. Even the bedroom and bathroom bins are perfect. The showers have endless hot water - just wait a couple of mins for it to run through. Breakfast is a choice of western (toast, eggs, bananas, watermelon/pineapple slices and tea/coffee) or Keralan dosas. It's wonderful value. Bastian and his family are incredibly kind - when I arrived I struggled to find an ATM that would issue me money. Bastian took me on his moped to find one that worked. Success ! And my stress levels dropped immediately. I then needed to see a doctor about a minor medical issue. Bastian took me to the local hospital and waited with me while I was attended to. I booked to stay for 3 nights and stayed for 2 weeks as I was so relaxed and in no rush to move on, particularly in the heat and humidity! The town is very safe, and I have walked home alone every night. The only annoyances are from the occasional tuk tuk driver/shop salesman in the old town, but they're not particularly persistent and finish work before you'll finish dinner ! NB: the main building is now painted white - it's much prettier than the pale brown in the main listing. April/May pre-monsoon season is very hot and humid. Some restaurants and cafes shut for a while (owners go to the mountains for some respite), but plenty are still open. "
Con " Though the rooms have ceiling fans, they do remain a little warm in the heat of the summer (it was 36 degrees outside during the day, and not much cooler at night). The windows conveniently have mesh panels that can be opened/locked shut. There are also security bars on the windows, so if you wish to keep the windows open, the room will still be secure but make sure you shut the mesh before dusk to stop any mosquitoes coming in for a feed ! Aircon is available in some rooms (at extra charge, I think, as it costs a lot more to run than a ceiling fan) so if you need something cooler, then please select one of these rooms. Please note that my comments aren't meant to be critical - just consider temperature comfort carefully if visiting during an excessively hot month like I did. As another guest wrote, I don't think that the rooftop terrace is accessible to guests. The upstairs breakfast room is partially an open area, but with a roof. There is plenty of space to sit outside of your room to read etc, but not really in the sunshine. For me, it's ok as I go exploring mid-afternoon, and it's too hot before then. "
