PROS: Beautiful place, very nice service, bedrooms and breakfast. Loved the Art Nouveau architecture of the place, ideally located close to hiking trails and ski resort. Free hotel parking lot. Weel chair accessible. Will recommend.
CONS: wellness is only accessible BEFORE your night, if you miss it and want to use it, it would cost 17€. The glass protection of the bathtudes are very short, hence making it easy to accidentally shower yourself and the floor at once.
I quite like historic hotels and this one didn't disappoint. The hotel and the furnishings in the common areas are indeed grand and reminiscent of a different era. The atmosphere truly does encourage you to just slow down and relax over a coffee or a drink at the bar. The hotel is in a great location and just a few steps away from many good restaurants and the Hrebienok funicular. It's also located between Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica and is only a short drive (or train ride) to either town, so it's very conveniently located for hiking. (The train station is just a few minutes walk from the hotel.) Parking at the hotel was easy and convenient. As expected, the breakfast buffet had a wide range of options and was quite good.
Our room was a bit smaller than I expected it would be, but it was still comfortable. Spa hours are quite limited, so if you plan to have a spa treatment, then be sure to make a reservation upon arrival. Unfortunately, I waited until our last day at the hotel to make an appointment and they were already fully booked for that day. (We didn't try to use the pool or other wellness facilities, so cannot comment on those.) No air-conditioning, so sometimes the room got a bit too hot (even with the window open) since we were there in the summer. Toiletries provided were a bit basic given the price level, but this is a minor quibble.
Location is perfect. Everything in Stary Smokovec is just a few meters away. Staff was friendly and helpful.
The bathroom desperately needs an update. It was clean but you could clearly see the age of it. The shower was very small. Small disadvantage is that you can not get to the breakfast room from the lobby with a baby stroller without taking some steps.
Atmosphere, views, location
The wellness And spa area was very clean and the staff extremely friendly and made us feel really welcome
There was a dress code for dinner (not sport clothes), which I found slightly OTT. At the end of the day this hotel is in High Tatras, where I went for hiking holidays, so I didn’t expect to need my ‘Sunday best’.
With a stay at Grandhotel Starý Smokovec, you'll be centrally located in Vysoke Tatry, within a 15-minute drive of AquaCity Poprad and Tricklandia. Featured amenities include a business center, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Free self parking is available onsite.
