A curious Mix
Close to beach, decent room, rooftop bar w spectacular views
Not so much "didn't like" but it was an odd mix... There were lots of older tourists and some families many of whom seemed to enjoy the ok buffet in the basement restaurant which gave the place the feel of a retirement home in Florida and then there's this very nice club on the roof that was more or less empty.
Hotel Helios - Costa Tropical has some amazing views of the ocean from many rooms and especially from the sun-tanning deck at the top of the hotel. The breakfast buffet is good, albeit simple - lots of fresh fruit and some nice hot dishes. The location is perfect - across from the beach and close to many restaurants.
Hotel Helios started charging for WiFi on October 1st 2010 and it's a big pain... 1 hour login is 1 Euro - but if you want to check email or Skype periodically throughout the day, you need to keep buying new logins - I only found out about the full day option on my last day (5 Euros). WiFi doesn't reach all rooms - so plan accordingly. Also, it was hard to get an iron - this isn't a business hotel, but can't be beat for vacations.
There should be dryers in the rooms
Rooms are spacious. Balcony small. Beds large and comfortable. Location excellent - beech-front with convenient, local sea-food & chinese restaurants. Pool small but adequate. Spanish and no English spoken.
Bar prices too expensive compared to average for locality.
The hotel is totally Spanish - there were no other foreign guests. Likewise the town of Almunecar was totally Spanish. The desk staff spoke English and were helpful, the bar staff were helpful and concocted iced coffees for us - it was VERY hot. In the evening a small band played in the air conditioned bar area - people were doing ballroom type dancing, with style, which was fun. The genuine experience.
The usual problem - could do with some more clothes storage and hooks on the backs of doors to hang clothes up.
Convenient for the beach and town plus secure parking
The room and its position
The smell of food[ fish] outside the restaurant area
Pleasant staff. Good service. Excellent location and views
Parking is a nuisance as key has to be collected. Roadworks outside - not their fault!
a functional and clean hotel - not one to spend lots of time in but did the job - air con was a godsend!
very hard to find free parking nearby - staff did not know where best to find it - and directed us to the 19 euros a day underground car park 10mins walk away. if you stay here, park for free further west up the hill inland
Swimming pool, view, breakfast
Lift, lack of parking availibility
Location was near the beach and town centre.
Was not informed about building work being carried out in hotel. The noise was unbearable, some guests had to move rooms. Not enough wardrobe cupboard space in room. Breakfast had poor choice and poorly cooked. Told by Manager not to use bath towels around pool but there was no notice to say that you couldn't and that pool towels could in fact be obtained from reception. Had to pay to use safe.
Featuring an outdoor pool and a rooftop terrace, Hotel Helios - Almunecar is located in Almunecar and is a short stroll from San Cristobal Beach and Caletilla Beach. It is ideally positioned for those wanting to discover the area's attractions.
A wide range of personalized services are available for guests of Hotel Helios - Almunecar, like a currency exchange, a car rental desk and a concierge. Children will enjoy their stay as there is an in-house games room and a kids club.
Rooms at the hotel are equipped with showers and telephones. Honeymoon suites are also available.
The hotel offers a convenient café, ideal for those who want a bite to eat without leaving the property. In the evening, those staying at the property can enjoy a beverage in the on-site bar. There is also the added convenience of an in-house restaurant.
There are a range of restaurants and cafés close to Hotel Helios - Almunecar, and Nerja is a brief drive away. It is 10 minutes' walk from Plaza de la Constitucion.
