On the banks of the river Yonne along the Quai de la Marine, the Hotel Le Maxime, BW Signature Collection, Auxerre, France, occupies a First Empire building that served for many years as a salt warehouse before it took the name of the man who made it a hotel, its rooms fully air-conditioned with a minibar, a flat-screen television, and free Wi-Fi. A private garage, a lift, and round-the-clock room service add to the comfort, a private room with a projector seats small gatherings, and a bar and cocktail lounge round out the stay. The riverside setting puts the old town just across the water. Auxerre rises in tiers above the Yonne, a fine old Burgundian town of steep lanes crowned by the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Etienne and the great abbey-church of Saint-Germain with its Carolingian crypts, with the riverboats of the Yonne and Nivernais canal and the celebrated white-wine vineyards of Chablis close by. Seen from the water at dusk, the towers and rooftops glow above the quays.
