The car that was provided was sub standard at best When I booked I requested a 4WD. At the time of renting I particularly asked if the vehicle was 4WD and the company said yes. But it was not a 4WD and I had trouble driving the hilly areas of Costa Rica and Manuel Antonio. In addition, the accelerator pedal of the car got occasionally stuck. So the car was accelerating even when I wasn’t pressing the accelerator pedal. It was a big safety hazard. I would not recommend NU Car Rentals
All of the NU representatives were cordial and helpful. During my stay I got a flat tire, they responded quickly and had the tire fixed in a matter of minutes and we were on our way. This is the second time I have rented from them and I will definitely do it again.
There was a minor scratch at the bottom of the front bumper which is not visible unless you are on your knees. As far as I am concerned we didn’t do anything to cause it. It may be already there and we didn’t notice when we took the care at midnight. At any rate my gripe is with how they handled this situation. We bought most expensive coverage possible with them which is twice the rental price itself. But during checkout they stalled us because of this issue even though we told them that we are cutting too close to our departure time and requested them to call the insurance and get it reimbursed because we already bought the coverage. But they insisted on us calling them and we couldn’t because we didn’t have local mobile plan. After lot of back and forth they checked other contracts on the vehicle and probably figured out that the damage was already there and the let us off the hook. It was a happy ending but the whole drama could have been avoided if they had customer service at the forefront of their minds.
We had prebooked and paid for 5 days. Upon pickup We were made to purchase an extra $350.00 Insurance policy to get the car with a $400.00 security hold aswell even though I had purchased insurance with my trip and paid for the rental. Even if you have insurance with credit card, they then do a $3,000 deposit hold and still charged 250.00 for 5 days. Please be careful with this company here. Would not use them again.
Initial cost admittedly low. What’s the catch? They propose a $429 insurance plan (for 5 days of rental) that I didn’t expect. Felt a bit trapped. Not the deal we had hoped for. I will look elsewhere next time in hopes of better transparency.
This was the worst customer service experience I’ve ever had. I paid $425 online for the rental, and we chose this company as it was the best price. It took us over 2 1/2 hours to rent a car, including waiting, over 30 minutes at an empty desk for someone to show up for the shuttle, another 30 minutes then waiting for the shuttle to actually arrive, and then an hour and a half in line to rent the car. We left our house at 4 AM, and had already been traveling for 8 hours that day with a 3 hour drive ahead of us, so this was a very unwelcome delay. And this wasn’t even the worst of it. There are other costs and insurances Nu requires you to buy that you cannot decline and they do not tell you about until you’ve already been waiting for over two hours to rent the car. Even if you already have insurance covered elsewhere, you are still required to pay an amount that ends up totaling more than the initial amount you paid. We had to end up paying $1100 total and having a $3000 hold put on our credit card. To be charged almost 3X the original booking amount was astonishing and quite honestly very dishonest and a disgusting business practice. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
