Cons:Transparency about the actual price when we arrived to the counterReviewed 12 Feb. 2021

Pros:Staff was very friendlyCons:It’s a scam. The price of the rental literally ended up costing 11x the reservation price due to the “mandatory insurance”. Everyone picking up a car felt they had been ripped off. This is probably the case with all Costa Rica car rental agencies but doesn’t make it right.Reviewed 15 Feb. 2021

Pros:quick pick-up drop offCons:The car I was given needs tons of work! Driver's side window did not work, car always had trouble starting, and the clutch was almost non-existentReviewed 22 Feb. 2021

Pros:ZeroCons:Do not rent from this location! I had insurance and a credit card to cover the “Costa Rica” insurance requirements and was still charged $1100 for a 7 day rental... their attitude was “so, go somewhere else” poor customer service and who do we complain too? How could we fix this? In a foreign country there is no recourse!Reviewed 4 Jan. 2021

Pros:The staff was fine and the process was efficient.Cons:The daily rate was very low but the insurance costs were extremely high. These costs were not advertised and so I ended up paying a lot more than I expected. I feel like I was tricked into this rental but what seemed like a good deal and in actuality was a bad deal. This is very disappointing.Reviewed 10 Jan. 2021

Pros:Not muchCons:We were forced to buy a THIRD insurance or we would not be given the keys, even after calling ahead and confirming that our TWO existing insurances provided enough coverage. The extra insurance was over $400 dollars, nearly doubling the cost of the total rental. We were also told we could drop off the rental at 5AM before our departing flight, but the location was closed and refused to allow us a return. They told us to leave it in the airport parking lot, even though corporate told us to absolutely not do that. This was a truly awful experience and I almost missed my international flight home.Reviewed 27 Jan. 2020

Pros:Nice staff at check-in and drop off.Cons:Charged me a full extra day for being 4 hours late (picked up car as almost noon - dropped up at 4). Told him, okay, I will just take the car and come back tomorrow - but the rate would be higher, even though they charged me $50 dollars for 'another day' for being 4 hours late. The car, USB nor AUX worked, guy just said 'sorry about that'. Also, I was shocked, when I waived the insurance, due my credit card covering, the deposit was $3,000. Never, have I had such a high deposit taken for a rental car. If I took their insurance, it would have only been $300. I went for the more 'economical' route, cheaper ends up being more expensive, always will be more expensive. First and last time I use Payless.... I will stick to Hertz/National/Enterprise, the big boys... Payless felt like the Sprint Airlines of Rental Cars.Reviewed 23 Dec. 2020

Pros:Friendly staff, easy pickup and drop off.Cons:Payed an astronomical amount for insurance per day that doesn't cover theft of license plates and an extra 15$ per day for being under 25 (24). They didn't have those prices online. Just said it would be extra for those things. Payed more in insurance and underage fees than I did for the car. Also the car was all wheel drive but could barely manage the mountain roads there in coasta rica, let alone the dirt roads.Reviewed 21 Dec. 2020

THIS PAYLESS WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND! EXCEPTIONAL!Pros:This Payless really went above and beyond. I had read some bad ratings on them, but, to this scrutinizing New Yorker, Payless pulled through with flying colors and I highly rate them! We rented a mid size 4 wheel drive SUV. I had read a few negative reviews about Payless in CR prior to our trip, so, I had called the Costa Rica San Jose Payless location in advance to firm up all prices and details, as I read actual costs can be quite different than on line quoted costs (as is typical for most rentals in CR). I had also heard a story where the car was unavailable upon arrival, which scared me, as we were traveling during Easter holiday, when all rental SUV's were sold out/rented. Payless spent time on the phone with me, explaining all extra costs (the necessary ones and optional ones) and assured me that my car would be there and ready. I had done my homework, and called my credit card to see if/what they would cover in Costa Rica, as it can be different by country. Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card ensures that their CDW would be acceptable and cover any CDW/damages to car. My credit card would cover up to 75K in CDW, (enough to cover the cost of the car (which, I had read could be twice the cost of the car in the USA)! As I had read by someone advising on renting a car in Costa Rica, I asked the Chase Sapphire Reserve Rep to send me the policy via Email, stating their coverage, to show to Payless. We found the shuttle outside the airport (after being directed by the airport workers, as it wasn't so obvious, but, it ended up being simple). The shuttle was quick and Payless took us right away (they were expecting us and no lines and more than one agent). The car was there, the costs were the same as discussed. They gave us a 2017 SUV SUZUKI (the newer model) and, even though they said it would not have a DVD player and might not have blue tooth, it They allowed me to use my credit card's CDW and purchase the SLI (Liability insurance). While I was interested in a navigation device, it was offered to me at $10 extra per day. Then, the agent suggested a 5G mobile device that would allow us to use my own phone for WAZE AND to use all our devices for internet during our trip - for the same $10/day price. This was worth its weight in GOLD! The best, was that, when we got into medical trouble (in Manuel Antonio) and had to take a helicopter to San Jose, Payless sent down a driver to relocate the car to the San Jose Hospital, where I had been flown with my son (for a small/reasonable charge). Otherwise, I would have had to bus it back to Manuel Antonio to get the car, after my son was released from the hospital. I also loved the quick and easy car return in Liberia (different location than the rental) AND the fact that, when they learned we were late for our flight, used our rental car (with all luggage still in it), to quickly get us to the airport and make our flight on time (instead of waiting for the shuttle). Unbelievable!Cons:I head read on line and was advised by phone that Payless office in San Jose could not accept a credit card without raised numbers on it (and most new credit cards are now making chip cards with flat numbers). My Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card had slightly raised numbers and Payless did not give me a hard time about it. I would imagine that if my card didn't have raised numbers (and it was my only card, that they would have had to take it)...but, I only called this credit card company to confirm Costa Rica card benefits, as my Amex Platinum card no longer has raised numbers AND the Chase Reserve Card supposedly has better trip cancellation/protection insurance. Not sure if that applies to cars (as I did not pay in advance), but, I used the card a lot for this trip and will see if it actually covers the hotels that we missed due to a medical interruption during our trip. When I asked for a GPS device, the rep offered it to me at $10 per day. However, after a longer discussion (and telling him that I had already payed $10/day to use my iphone in Costa Rica (as it has WAZE), he THEN suggested I purchase the 5G mobile device for the same $10/day price. This device enabled us to use everything (our own phones, ipads, laptop, etc...AND WAZE). I think I would have preferred him to bring this up first (before the GPS), as it covered everything we needed. Thankfully, Payless offered it and it worked beautifully! Also, the actual price is SO MUCH HIGHER than the quoted price on line (typical in CR), but, why not just be upfront? I guess because their competition does the same.Reviewed 6 Apr. 2018
