We had cut our trip shorter by four days and the price quoted changed very little. When I questioned this I was told because I HAD to purchase additional insurance on the car we were driving. Also, our flight left before the dealer opened so I was told I had to leave the car at the airport, but not where at the airport. There are no signs or public parking lots around the airport so I drove around asking people where to leave it at 4:00 am in the morning, but no one knew. I finally took it to Payless and parked it in the front and took an Uber back to the airport. It was a real hassle.Reviewed 12 Apr. 2024

Pros:The staff was friendlier than most car rentals I have experienced at SJO. However, the car was pretty beaten up, though it ran okay. And, they told me the car had 3/8 of a tank of gas when it was closer to 1/4, but the contract said it had 3/4. I brought it back with 5/8 and they honored what they had said about 3/8, but it still cost me extra in gas, just to be sure.Cons:This car was pretty beaten up and probably shouldn't be rented. Pros:Staff was very friendlyCons:It’s a scam. The price of the rental literally ended up costing 11x the reservation price due to the “mandatory insurance”. Everyone picking up a car felt they had been ripped off. This is probably the case with all Costa Rica car rental agencies but doesn’t make it right.Reviewed 15 Feb. 2021

Pros:Nice staff at check-in and drop off.Cons:Charged me a full extra day for being 4 hours late (picked up car as almost noon - dropped up at 4). Told him, okay, I will just take the car and come back tomorrow - but the rate would be higher, even though they charged me $50 dollars for 'another day' for being 4 hours late. The car, USB nor AUX worked, guy just said 'sorry about that'. Also, I was shocked, when I waived the insurance, due my credit card covering, the deposit was $3,000. Never, have I had such a high deposit taken for a rental car. If I took their insurance, it would have only been $300. I went for the more 'economical' route, cheaper ends up being more expensive, always will be more expensive. First and last time I use Payless.... I will stick to Hertz/National/Enterprise, the big boys... Payless felt like the Sprint Airlines of Rental Cars.Reviewed 23 Dec. 2020

Had a break failurePros:NothingCons:Paid $800+ for 5 days, but when I stated the riding, the ride was really bad. Still choose to use it for 5 days. During 5th day driving down from Irazu Volcano, the break failed suddenly.. Holding the hand break and pressing break pedal didn't stop the car. To avoid life threatening accident, I had to hit a post to stop the car. Still wife is suffering with pain. When I called Payless to report the incident, amazed to know that no question about if the passengers are ok.. After 2:45 hours got a replacement car, with dirty smell from the rear side. After reaching the payless rental place to return the call, when I explained these incidents, their reaction was the worst, it's almost like who cares if the break failed or the replacement call smelled.. Will find out the options to take action. Don't rent from Payless if you are going to Costa Rica.Reviewed 30 Dec. 2018

Bait and SwitchPros:Availability of vehicles on hand and excellent customer service.Cons:The cost that was presented during the online booking process did not remotely come close to the actual cost during the car rental pickup. I ended up paying close to $1,000 overall. Also, I paid for full coverage for car insurance online as part of the online booking process so it can be ready upon pickup. But Payless did not honor the online car insurance purchase and therefore in order to finalize the car rental transaction with Payless I had to purchase their car insurance. Although Payless provided great service and had excellent cars for rent I did not appreciate the blatant disparities in cost and having to purchase 2 full coverage car insurances.
