KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Cabo San Lucas
A rental car is by far the best option to explore not only Cabo San Lucas, but also its surrounding area, with its secluded beaches and nearby towns that are well worth a day trip. The whole Tourist Corridor connecting San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas features a vast array of gorgeous beaches, so drive along the 20-mile stretch and make scenic stops as you please with your rental car.
All the major car rental companies, including Avis and Alamo, can be found at San Jose Del Cabo International Airport (SJD), which is about a 40-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas. Most car rental desks can be found in the Arrivals Hall area after going through baggage claim and customs, but some will have off-site offices, in which case they’ll provide a shuttle. You’ll need an International Driver’s Permit, as well as Mexican car insurance for the length of your rental contract.
Navigating Cabo San Lucas is fairly easy, but remember most traffic signs will be in Spanish only. The city is very popular during spring break and school vacations, which means the roads will be more crowded during those seasons. There are also several speed bumps across town. Most highways in Mexico are tolled, including the one that goes to the airport, so make sure you always have Mexican pesos or American dollars in cash with you.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic does happen sometimes in the Los Cabos area, especially during the summer and spring break seasons. Traffic jams in the surrounding Cabo San Lucas roads are also common, so avoid driving into town during the morning rush hour (between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.) or out of town, particularly on weekends, after 5 p.m. If you’re heading to the airport during these times, plan your journey in advance.
Create great experiences by exploring Cabo San Lucas in your private rented car. From sightseeing to road trips and dining in fine restaurants to driving around downtown, this Mexican city has you covered. A cheap car rental in Cabo San Lucas is the best alternative to buses and other forms of public transport given that it is flexible and convenient. With your car rental, you can venture as far as Baja California to enjoy its beautiful beaches. You can also take a two-hour drive to Cabo Pulmo to showcase your diving skills, participate in sportfishing, or enjoy the common whale-shark sighting. Cabo del Este, La Paz, Todos, and Santos are some of the must-visit tourist spots with your rental car and they are approximately 54.4 (87.6km) from Cabo San Lucas.
Whether you are visiting Cabo San Lucas for business or leisure, choosing the best car rental should be your priority if you truly want to get the most of this Mexican city. Apart from picking up a car at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), you may consider renting a cheaper one from downtown Cabo San Lucas. For superior customer experience, comfort and convenience at unbeatable car hire rates, rely on top car hire agencies such as Hertz, Enterprise, Sixt, National, Avis, Alamo, and Budget, all found within the city center. Make an early car reservation especially if you are traveling to Cabo San Lucas during the high seasons for tourists.
Driving along Cabo San Lucas roads is fairly easy since motorists keep on the right side just like in the US, Canada, and most European countries. However, it is wise to acquaint yourself with some of the most unique driving laws in this city. You also need to choose from basic, medium or full coverage car insurance offered in Cabo San Lucas upon picking up your rented car. Most importantly, fill up your car tank before returning it, as you may be charged extra for bringing it back with an empty tank.

I purchased a rental with all insurance including third party liability included. At the office they insisted I could not get the car without purchasing supplemental third party liability insurance (SLI). Phone call from the agency that I booked through didn't make a difference. They wanted to charge about 40 USD/day in SLI, which clearly would have been excessive even if TLI wouldn't already have been included in the rate I paid for. Ended up not taking the car as just their SLI would have cost me 5x what I paid for in car rental fees. I would never rent with them again and encourage no one else to do so unless they're happy paying 40 USD/day for just SLI (if you need CDW it would have been up to double that).

This was not published anywhere when booking the car: at pickup they make you pay either $105 USD/day for supplemental liability insurance, or a $5000 deposit to cover the value of the car. Completely unreasonable hidden fees! The pickup also took almost an hour. I would not rent from them again!

The process was confusing The rental was for 3 days I purchased the reservation and car collison insurance. When I got to los cabos there was a van that drove us to the rental that was nice. When we got to the rental place they were asking us to purchase more insurance through them or else we couldn't get the car. It was between $3000-1000 USD for the deposit plus a fee of 200-90 USD Something like that. I may not understand rentals in mexico but I'm more accustomed to a couple hundred not thousands I didnt want to deposit that kind of money so I decided to not take the rental.

There was no one at the counter to get the car. I had to rent a vehicle from Avis instead. Very disappointed
The price was completely off.. I booked in Canadian dollars, ended up in USD. Price ended up more than double what was originally anticipated, no option to pre pay, forced to purchase insurance on vehicle when I have insurance coverage through my credit card provider. Also when trying to contact Avis at the designated area, no answer for 30mins, needed to get the hotel desk clerk to contact several locations to find the right person to bring the vehicle to the meeting spot. Zero mention of filling petrol, charged us extra on top after. Horrible experience on all fronts.
Awful. Forced to purchase Mexican insurance which pushed the cost to almost 4 times of what was confirmed when I booked. Complete false advertisement. Car battery died and left us stranded. No wiper fluid and no tools to change a tire. Left feeling ripped off. Avoid all car rentals during high season in your travels to MX if you can. This insurance scam stuff is a pervasive issue.

Renting a car in Mexico is a rip off. Once you think you have secured a rental fee you get hit with not only one type of insurance coverage BUT 3. So your rental ends up being very expensive. If you have a credit card that can cover your basic needs, IT IS NOT ENOUGH to satisfy the do call coverage. In addition, they send you a letter telling you that because of high demand your vehicle is not available, BUT they a wonderful upgrade for 3 or 4 times as expensive. We ended up renting from a different vendor, and ended up being less expensive and my credit card satisfied the basic coverage. However, we had to sign o declination on all other additional BS.
