Contrary to what you'd imagine, a 4WD vehicle isn't your only Ouarzazate car hire option. The city's street surfaces are good, as are those of the roads leading to the major tourist sites nearby. This is true even if you're taking a road trip through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass in the Atlas Mountains that leads to the fringes of the Sahara desert. For driving in the city, don't take more car than you need to fit everyone in. If you are experienced at driving in deep sand, you can hire a 4x4 and go driving in the desert dunes. Otherwise, don't attempt it and rather book a tour with professional drivers.

The speed limits in Ouarzazate are straightforward. You can drive at up to 60 km/h (about 37 mph) in the urban area, which includes the downtown district. Outside urban and residential areas, you can drive at up to 100 km/h (about 62 mph). This includes the motorways, known locally as expressways. On highways, the speed limit is 120 km/h (about 75 mph). However, always stay alert for vehicles like donkey carts travelling as slowly as 20 km/h (about 12.5 mph) on any of these types of roads.

Finding parking in Ouarzazate usually won't pose a problem, and won't cost much either. The Avenue Moulay Rachid Car Park is a guarded gravel parking area with an asking price of around 20 MAD for the day, which is only around 1.6 GBP. However, remember that haggling is virtually expected here, so you can talk the price down. If you're visiting the market area, you'll find free parking behind the Souk de Ouarzazate mall. Other parking is available at places like Immeuble El Ghifari on Av. Mohammed V and on Av. Moulay Ettahar Ben Abdulkarim.
