Athens car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Athens

The main car rental agencies rent at the airport. Discount agencies require use of a shuttle bus (different one for each agency). The shuttle buses are in a pick up parking area that is about 30 meters to the right (facing away from the terminal) of the terminal’s exit B5. You may wish to call up your car agency confirm, but shuttles tend to be frequent. Discount agencies can have small new cars at ridiculously low prices, such as below $20 per day for an economy (sub compact) manual drive car.

make sure you know about adblue if you rent a diesel
Verified travelerAug 2024
Choose car rental company (enterprise/alamo, sixt, etc) with pickup/dropoff lot at the airport terminal. Might cost few more euros up front but it’s worth the easier process, time savings, better customer service and reduced anxiety when trying to catch a flight.
KerimJul 2024
Shop around with other international agencies. Many have an easy service and good value and new cars.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Smaller is better. Easier to park. If you don’t have credit card coverage get insurance
Verified travelerJul 2024
Think small and tight parking spaces.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Parking in Athens is not easy, driving is ok.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Small cars are best. Don't drive during peak hours! 😉 Do drive defensively. Outside greater Athens driving is a breeze. Ensure compatibility with Android Auto (or Apple Carplay) for GPS and maps. Also ask for an English menu on the radio display if possible.
MicheleSep 2023
Picked up at the airport and headed out. Would not have attempted to drive inside Athens. Toll roads were in beautiful driving condition.
RyanNov 2023
Driving in Athens was pretty awful but having the car to explore the beautiful country was totally worth it
Verified travelerSep 2023
Make SURE the company is at our CLOSE to the airport and double check the shuttle process ahead of time if you have to take one.
Verified travelerSep 2023
The traffic is a little crazy, if you are not used to driving in over populated cities it could be hard on you.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Drive carefully and don't get too excited about the Greek drivers' impatience.
TedSep 2023
Obey highway left lane. Move over after passing
MainakSep 2023
Airport is a long way from city centre, metro can be infrequent. Bus is likely the most consistent and cheapest way to get there. Had to wait 25 minutes for a metro which was super crowded, bus frequency is typically 20 mins.

We did not drive in Athens - headed straight out of town. However we found the driving in Greece to be very easy - roads are in much better condition than they are in our home state of New York and the signage is great. I’m so glad we rented a car - it was very easy to get around and find our way.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Used GPS (waze). no poblems at all.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Parking in the city is challenging and you need to be able to parallel park in small spaces or have someone to help guide you (the cars don’t have backup cameras).
EdwardJul 2023
The ad STOP at the crossline and rand about means STOP, people here is very demanding about this rule
Verified travelerJul 2023
Understand parking is very, very tight, and be patient, other than that no big deal.
Verified travelerAug 2023
We did not drive much in Athens

Look at the reviews when renting cars and avoid local reviews because those can just be friends of the businesses! Don't save pennies to end up spending dollars. Avoid Green Motion and other scammy companies that treat their customers like trash.
