The staff is very friendly. The breakfast is a traditional Japanese breakfast. There is good tea and new sweets everyday in your room. You have to share the bathroom with the other guests, which totally worked out fine for me, because I never met another guest. Very great location. If you like walking, the most important places of Kyoto are in walking distance! Thanks for a nice stay!
cleanliness, and rooms did not have locks.
The futon sheets were not clean
It was an authentic Ryokan. It was old but in excellent condition. Taka who runs the inn is incredibly helpful and kind. He made our stay so much better. He always gave us fantastic food recommendations. Everyday we had a new tea and snack waiting for us. The beds were so comfortable. Best sleep of my life. We splurged a little on the deluxe room and it was so worth it. I thought it would be hard to share a bathroom but it wasn’t a big deal. I plan on always staying here when I come to Kyoto. I’m very attached to this place. Also I want to know what the shampoo, conditioner and body wash is in the bathroom. My hair has never been so soft.
This is not the property’s fault but anyone who doesn’t bother asking or paying attention. The first night someone left the water on and the hot water was gone by morning. I also wish everyone that stayed at the hotel would leave their slippers outside the bathroom door so you would know it’s occupied. The door locks from sliding the two doors closed and pushing a little metal link into a opening in the middle of the two screens but other guests don’t bother to ask questions or notice those details. Nearly walked in on a couple drying off because they didn’t bother to do the things above.
Absolutely magical! Staying at this hotel felt like we found a hidden gem. Very beautiful traditional Kyo-Machiya-type house. Everything about this hotel felt very original and romantic. Owner was nice and speaks very good English. We regret having arrived a bit late in the evening and not being able to enjoy the stay longer. Feels very private, calm and relaxing. Will definitely come back, and very excited to try out having dinner there too next time.
Due to that it is so true to its origins, a machi-ya on colder days might be a bit cold. But this is really part of the experience. However, there was an AC in the room that helped out quite a bit to stay warm :)
