Hotel El Sol - Panajachel - Building
1
9.1 Excellent (352 reviews)
C$ 37+
Overview Reviews
Located in Panajachel, Hotel El Sol is in the mountains, within a 5-minute drive of Church of Saint Francis and Panajachel Municipal Market. Featured amenities include luggage storage and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It was a great experience. It is owned and run by a Japanese landlord. The dormitory might be the most comfortable that I stayed in. It is more like a semi private room. It is very clean. The employees (the owner and the lady in the kitchen are amazing and helpful). I must say that this is not a party hostel or don’t expect to socialize with other guests. It is more for people like me who enjoy being alone. I love it. Super comfortable like a hotel
Cons: It is a little bit out of the city but it takes only 5 minutes with a tuk-tuk and it costs 5 Q (10 with the luggage).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing value. Excellent security. A lot of space.
Cons: For the money everything was outstanding!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The place is a bit outside and very quiet, free drinking water, Tee and Coffee, close to the Lake, the dormirtory is more like a privat room
Cons: Breakfast was just a bit too small ;)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The place is absolutely clean. I just spent a night here. In the morning, when I had to go early in the bus departure, there were no tuk tuk. The owner was so kind and gave me a lift with his scooter. Really appreciated!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service and spacious room & bathroom. Very nice sitting area on each floor. Nice kitchen, free tea & coffee.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a nice and quiet location and easy to get to central Pana.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host was really nice. Great service. Everything is clean & you get your own little space. Downtown is only 15 minutes walk or 5Q túk-túk ride.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms, ability to use a bicycle for free which is great since the hotel is a little bit away from shops / restaurants etc.
6.7 Good
Pros: Clean and everything you needed
Cons: Much too far out. Cost a lot to get back from Flores at night by taxi as Tuk Turks banned after 7.30.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is really friendly and made our stay and requests very easy. Will be back for sure.

8.3 Excellent
Cons: Being 6 ft, 2 inches I need a bed without a footboard. Didn't have that at this hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great views of the lake. The staff was very friendly and professional. The location couldn’t be better
Cons: Nothing
7.9 Good
Pros: The location of the hotel is excellent with easy access to restaurants and the boat dock to take day trips to the towns around the lake.
Cons: The restaurant is very expensive for what you get, especially for breakfast. For the price of the room they could include the basic ammenities like shampoo, lotion, etc they only provide soap from a dispenser. Also no tea or coffee machine in the room. We requested one of the rooms to be a king bed when doing the reservation, upon arrival they informed us it was not possible.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: comfortable beds, location, restaurant has a great view, staff are helpful
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is very nice and clean. Location is perfect, right in front of the lake and with a spectacular view. Hotel staff were very kind and always trying to help or see if we needed something.
Cons: Everything was fine.
7.9 Good
Pros: The view across Lake Atitlan can not be beaten, the hotel was well situated, allowing easy access to the lake and the interesting towns elsewhere around the shores. The rooms were comfortable and spacious and ours opened onto a narrow but well kept strip of garden. This was on a raised level overlooking the beautiful lake. The bathroom was a little small and dark but functional. The staff in reception were very good and helpful, particularly in assisting with transfers to and from hotel and arranging a tour of the small towns on the other side of the lake.
Cons: The food was quite good in the restaurant but the hotel does cater for large tour groups, something we prefer to avoid. Not sure about security, particularly in the restaurant. Panajachel is over touristy and in retrospect I would not have chosen it as a place to stay, however I would definitely recommend Lake Atitlan as a place to visit.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location. The grounds were breathtaking. It was just as I expected. Our team was there for a one night rest after our mission trip in Chichicastanengo. It was perfect for some rest and relaxation.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location, views staff and secure parking.
Cons: Room was slightly dark without view but we didn’t need that.

2.0 Mediocre
Cons: Wifi did not work, bed was like cement and bathroom was dirty
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Clean rooms. Nice garden. Quiet. Good breakfast. Very accommodating staff. A fantastic value. Will be back!!
Cons: one Of our rooms upstairs was quite warm as the sun hit it during the day and it Had only a fan. Otherwise there was nothing else wrong.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The grounds are great, lots of garden space, breakfast was good and bed was good.
Cons: I only stayed one night so not much to share. I guess it was pretty noisy as walls, floors are thin. no real curtain. Dark room.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice Hotel, nice staff, I‘d come back any time!
7.0 Good
Pros: The location is wonderful - centrally located but still quiet. Also, although breakfast was not included in the room rate, it was very convenient with lots of reasonably priced options and delicious coffee/food. The room was spacious and clean.
Cons: The Wi-Fi was abysmal. The only way to get a signal at all was either sit in the bathroom (and get a very weak signal) or sit outside in the courtyard. When we inquired at the front desk about the Wi-Fi they shrugged and said that it worked fine for them outside and at the front desk - very unhelpful. It was extremely inconvenient to have to sit outside to check on travel plans, research activities, etc. Overall, the front desk staff were not very friendly and certainly did not go out of their way to help address any issues.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed one night in the 2 bedroom/loft room and were very pleased with it. Great location just a block off the Main Street, very safe. Breakfast restaurant downstairs, and filtered water on site was nice.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The grounds were beautifully maintained. The room decor was simple but elegant and the rooms were spacious. Breakfasts were convenient, delicious, fairly priced, peaceful, and the limitless good coffee was much appreciated. We arranged for a temezcal sauna and were glad we did. Their restaurant recommendations were good. We were 1 minute off the main street yet still so quiet!
Cons: No complaints!

7.5 Good
Pros: Beautiful view of the lake
Cons: Rooms were very hot. No air conditioning and there is no good air circulation in the room to cool it down
5.0 Okay
Pros: Location and the view..
Cons: We didnt have water for 2 hours due to maintanance. We couldnt shower, use the toiler , sink etc. At least they should've let us know ahead of time...We paid $500 for 2 rooms Sat & Sun. ( Dollars) . The staff was friendly but all they could do was Smiling...The breakfast buffet was also expensive, $12 per person. I was not impressed at all.
7.1 Good
Pros: Change de roug, change de elevator, in general to old

Pros: Very clean and comfortable Double room. Staff very helpful in booking onward travel. We booked onward shuttle and FDN bus and all travel went to plan. Very nice shuttle bus and friendly driver.

Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. The hotel staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Great "vibe" all around. We did end up spending a lot of time relaxing on the terrace.
Cons: From the description, I thought there was a private balcony with a view of the lake. It is a shared terrace with tables and chairs that you can use to relax. Unfortunately there is not a good view of the lake because there are trees in the way.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The manager was very kind, friendly, and helpful in making our travel arrangements. It was a nice place
Cons: Can’t think of anything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location; great staff; very nice rooms; great food.
Cons: THE DOGS BARKING AT NIGHT COULD MAKE US GO ELSEWHERE NEXT TRIP. THEY WERE AWFUL AND VERY INTERRUPTIVE TO MY FILM CREW THAT IS SEEKING TO MAKE A FILM TO HELP PEOPLE THROUGH WORLD NEIGHBORS. I SLEPT THROUGH IT. MOST PEOPLE CAN'T. A real problem.

Pros: Had access to lake and kayak rentals. Staff was very helpful and pleasant. Views we're amazing
Cons: My only complaint was that they didn't have ice. You had to go into town to get it. But luckily the town wasn't too far.

Cons: Great value, fantastic location, gorgeous gardens, extravagant and delicious breakfast buffet! All the staff are exceptionally accommodating, gracious and at your beck and call. They bend over backwards for you. Comfortable bed, nice hot shower. Only complaint is slow internet because so many people are using it at peak times. But that is a minor quibble. I absolutely loved this hotel and will come back back for sure.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location and LOVED the facilities and the opportunity to steam and use the warm pools!
Cons: Nothing, we had such a positive experience.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The grounds are beautifully kept and secure. We liked our rooms, and the spa services and hot tubs were fabulous.
Cons: The restaurant on site is nice, although we would have liked to have coffee available a little earlier than 7:00AM. In-room coffee pots would have been great! And although our rooms were directly behind a noisy restaurant, it was quiet by midnight. WiFi was only available near the office, not in the rooms.
6.0 Good
Pros: The spa facilities are great. Free sauna and thermal baths, this is very relaxing. You can ask for towels at the staff so you dont need those of the room. Beautiful gardens! Genius breakfast is small but ok. Lots of nearby breakfast places around. Shower was large and hot.
Cons: Mattress could use some renewal! The room seemed a little outdated, could use some updating (looking at the price you pay per night). Very limited comfortable sitting areas in the beautiful garden. Such a shame! Would be great to have hammocks. Internet does not work in the rooms and connection works more or less at the reception.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location on the main street near to everything, 5 minutes to the lake. Nice garden with spaces for relax, like a oasis escape from the agitation of the town. Friendly staff, pay attention to the clients' requirements The room very spacious, very clean and nicely decorated, nice terrace in front of the room (no. 8).
7.5 Good
Pros: The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. Good location. Free filtered water was great, to save on plastic.
Cons: The WiFi didn’t work in my room, even though I was next door to the reception. In fact, I couldn’t get it to work at all. The room was a bit noisy. A room further away from the street and reception would be better. Hot and cold taps are the wrong way round, but with no notification of this. Breakfast was expensive at $12 USD per person, so I ate in a couple of the cafes close by instead, which were much better value. The bathroom was a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Good location to central of Panajachel and ferry terminal to other towns around lake Atitlan. Flexible to allow us to early check in at 10am as we transfer from another hotel to their. Help us to call the travel agency when they not yet come on time as we don’t speak Spanish. WiFi is very strong. Very strong shower head. Included with fan, even though we don’t need it at the midnight ad it getting cold at mid night. ( end of July) Like the style of the hotel in quiet and safe place..small garden with tree which feel comfortable sitting there.
Cons: The towel has some stain of yellow mark even though we understand they clean it. But it may scare customer, so it is suggest to replace any towel with some mark which cannot be clean. Pay in cash only, and not accept credit card. They should make a remark in the hotel policy.
9.2 Excellent
Cons: The mattress was not soft and comfortable
7.0 Good
Pros: Friendly staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds
Cons: Rooms and breakfast are very basic. There are hotels in Panajachel that offer the same quality for considerably less money.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD, THE LADY IN THE FRONT DESK WAS EXCELLENT, LOCATION SUPERB, SHORT WALKING DISTANCE TO FOOD AND SHOPPING WE HAS SIX KIDS, SO THE BIG BEDROOM WITH 6 BEDS WAS PERFECT, THEY HAD A BLAST
Cons: THE CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST COULD IMPROVE, ALL THEY HAD WAS FRUIT, TOAST, AND COFFEE. HOW ABOUT SOME CEREAL, SWEET ROLLS PERHAPS, ORANGE JUICE ??? HOW ABOUT A READING LAMP ON THE NIGHT TABLES ? SOME ICE ON THE FRIDGE WOULD BE HELPFUL
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Good home made breakfast. Fresh fruit. Nice people.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is on a quiet(er) side street near the center of town, and a reasonable walk from the waterfront. It has a secure courtyard for parking. The hotel is two stories and the rooms open either to the courtyard or wide second story balcony. The staff was very nice and breakfast was "basic +" and very good. Staff was willing to do laundry for us for a fair price, and there is a cloths line on the roof (no charge to use that ;-)
Cons: No complaints!
7.5 Good
Cons: The billing with booking.com. It was not clear on my bill that the taxes where extra and not included in the bill I was sent. So it was a surprise when I got there with my group of 8 to discover that the cost was actually another 1/3 more.

7.1 Good
Pros: The room had an absolutely beautiful view.
Cons: The futon outside on patio was dirty. At times there was no one who spoke English. Food at restaurant for dinner was very mediocre. Need meat on menu. Did like the ginger soup.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Size. Very few rooms. As we were staying for a full week, we were upgraded to the top room with a spectacular view. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we succeded in having the relaxing week that we intended. There were a few good , if tough, walks around.
Cons: Totally vegetarian. Our fault for not reading the small print. The set meals were of mixed quality and quite expensive. Some were very heavy. We went for the a la carte most of the time. There was a 'games lounge' with a chess set, but it would have benefitted from more games.
4.6 Okay
Pros: Great views of the lake.
Cons: They were super focused on charging us for anything we would do. They wouldn't take credit cards and were constantly sending us random paypal links. There were no yoga classes nor massages available. The jacuzzi wasn't working. They overcharged 5x for exactly the same tours you could hire in the city. The staff was not nice and was constantly trying to sell us stuff. Completely overrated.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Beautiful natural location; decent food.
Cons: Transactional approach; terrible woman at reception and terrible arrival and check in process. Also, found a dirty bandaid in my sheets that was not mine !!!! Terrible WiFi and cel service. More detail: Awful woman at reception; terrible check in process whereby one travels for hours by plane and car to get there and they won’t give you your room key until you pay via PayPal. Every time you book to do an activity, they send you a PayPal link and ask you to pay. Worse yet, bad internet so you can’t even pay via PayPal easily. Get a credit card system and a nicer friendlier check in process that doesn’t make guests feel like they are just dollar signs.

Cons: For the money everything was outstanding!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The place is a bit outside and very quiet, free drinking water, Tee and Coffee, close to the Lake, the dormirtory is more like a privat room

9.6 Excellent
Pros: There have been many changes since I last visited 3 years ago including the most comfortable bed I have had this trip. Happy to see that the most kind gentleman is still there to help with my luggage and other things.
Cons: There was a problem with the shower with water spraying everywhere. I was able to control it though.
7.9 Good
Pros: The pool is small but good enough to relax
Cons: At night it's a bit noisy due go the "bars" around the hotel. About booking it doesn't show you the real cost of the hotel it doesn't include the taxes.
