The central location was perfect. The staff were friendly and helpful, and - due to the hot weather - kindly accommodated our request to put some of our chocolate in their fridge. Being able to park in the hotel car park was terrific. Dinner was good. Breakfast was also quite reasonable, despite the background music (see below).
There was no air conditioning in the room. This was appalling, considering that we arrived on the hottest day on record in the UK. Not only that but Cambridge - at 38.7 C - was the hottest place in the UK! We had just one fan and our sash windows hardly opened, so we had an extremely uncomfortable night. Emergency air conditioning should have been provided by the hotel. At the very least, additional fans should have been provided. Intriguingly we discovered that there was air conditioning in the basement meeting room. In retrospect it would have been better if they had given us camp beds down there instead. Apart from the lack of air conditioning, we found our room was noisy. We had been placed in a room at the back of the hotel where the noise of an adjacent building site was very intrusive. My partner was unable to have an afternoon's sleep, which she desperately needed as she wasn't 100 per cent well. It wasn't just our room that was hot and sticky. We found that there was no air conditioning in the hotel restaurant or bar. There was a ceiling fan in the bar, but it wasn't operating. If that wasn't bad enough, throughout our stay the hotel's background music was wall-to-wall Sade. There was no let up from the mournful 1980s soul-jazz songstress. She was in the restaurant, the bar, the lift and even the loos. I believe we endured more than three hours of Sade - including a live album that I wasn't aware of - and to add insult to injury we heard her live album again at breakfast too. All in all our stay was a very unpleasant experience, which could have been vastly improved with emergency air conditioning, working ceiling fans and some different background music. This hotel needs to get its act together very quickly, especially considering the prices that it charges.
The location is very good, right next to the Fitzwilliam museum
The parking costs £15 per night, which is very expensive considering the room was almost £100. The hotel is very tired and requires a lot of upgrading and modernisation.
All good, but tough sledding when its 90+ degrees outside!, Great English breakfast
Older style room and bathroom, needs updating, good size though
It was hot and there is no air con but the staff had very thoughtfully placed a spare sheet and fan in my room and left the window open.
Unfortunately, 3 out of 4 times I needed reception there was no one there and I had to go and find someone elsewhere in the hotel. I understand that staff need to address other issues, but it seems that during the day at least the staff could cover reception or at least have a bell at the desk.
