KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Eugene
A rental car is the perfect way to explore not only Eugene, but also other jaw-dropping locations in Oregon that are within reach. A car will give you the advantage of navigating freely across the state without having to depend on public transportation, allowing you to either go west to the Oregonian coast with its wild beaches, or east towards the many national forests of the Cascade Range, including Willamette National Forest, which is a 30-minute drive from Eugene.
Most of the big car rental agencies, including Alamo, Avis, and Enterprise, can be found at Eugene Airport (EUG), also known as Mahlon Sweet Field, which is less than 12 miles northwest of the city center. The car rental desks are situated within the terminal – just follow the Baggage Claim signs and then take a right. The rental cars are typically parked across the street from the main entrance.
Navigating Eugene is pretty straightforward, and you’ll be able to reach most places surrounding the city with a GPS. If you’re driving in the winter, remember you will most likely need good snow tires and chains. Oregon’s highways have “Snow Zone” signs, which indicate the current chain and traction tires’ requirements, so keep an eye out for those. If you’re driving in the rain or snow, allow yourself more time to get to places and be extra alert.
Eugene is one of the least congested cities in the country, but you will still see more people on the roads during morning rush hour (between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.), when people go to work and parents drop off their kids, and then again after 5 p.m., as everyone heads home. The I-5 towards Portland can get quite crowded too, so make sure you plan your journey in advance if you’re either heading there or driving from there to Eugene.
If you are in a hurry, avoid driving Eugene car rentals using Interstate 5. Interstate 5 is the main route through Eugene that commuters use, especially during rush hour; that runs from 7 AM to 8.30 AM and 3.30 PM to 6.30 PM. An alternative route that would still work for you is the Oregon Route 99. Always check your routes before you start the journey to get alternative routes and check the traffic state on various routes.
The primary safety measures when driving in Eugene are that you should always ensure that your Eugene car rental seatbelts are fastened. Additionally, if you have children below four years, ensure they are strapped into a child seat and in the back seat. For the safety of other road users, you cannot do a U-turn when visibility is impaired on a road that doesn't have speed limits. Additionally, don't make a U-turn at intersections and traffic signals, especially in metropolitan areas. You can turn right when the traffic signal is red as long as you stop to confirm if the road is clear. Before reserving your cheap car rental in Eugene, go through the updated parking and distracted driving laws.
Parking in Eugene is quite strict. The state doesn't allow drivers to double park. You can get free parking on the streets in central business districts. However, it should not be in bike lanes, railroad crossings, or near construction work. Don't park anywhere that can cause traffic, even at a crosswalk intersection. Additionally, Eugene parking laws have strict distance marks when parking close to a traffic signal, fire hydrant, or crosswalk intersection. For example, maintain the following distances: at least 50 feet away from a traffic signal and railroad crossing, 10 feet from a fire hydrant, 15 feet from a fire station driveway on the same side of the road, and 75 feet away if you are on the opposite side of the road.

Terrible! I reserved it online then wasn’t able to pick it up because I didn’t have a credit card. It had even taken my debit card while making the reservation. I went with a different rental company and wasn’t able to use my Budget reservation.

The only thing that he had was a Ram truck. I was ok with that thinking he wouldn’t give me a huge Ram truck. I am 83 and 5’1”. I went to the truck and pulled myself in. Good exercise I told myself. First stop would be some where I could buy a step stool and some rope to attach to the stool so I could pull it into the truck. Only one othèr problem I could not solve, I could not see over the steering wheel. I had to go back in and hopefully they could find me another car.

Great experience with Budget. The only thing I could say though is that the car had a funky smell in it at first.
We were expecting a Mazda compact but were given a Chevy Malibu, but that turned out to be ok.

Upon arrival, found out my request for car pick up at the airport had been changed to another location. Hertz staff was completely unhelpful. Told me to call the other store. Coming internationally, didn’t have a phone that could call locally. Found a cab on my own to head to another location. $35 and an hour and a half later, finally arrived to the other Hertz location. (Remember I just got off a very long flight from overseas!) although the staff was very helpful, I had to pay extra to be able to drop the car at the airport upon drop off. I was offered a, “Im so sorry, when the airport is out of cars, they do this!” Very disappointing and made my trip exhausting. But most of all disappointed in the attitude and unwillingness to offer any help from the airport Hertz staff.
The staff was helpful. The drop-off was very easy.
Cons:
I wish it didn't cost so much to add other drivers to the rental agreement. That made it much more stressful to have to do all the driving for a week.

Would have preferred a more gas efficient vehicle for planned trip, pick up and drop off were different. We have rented where spouse is allowed to drive without additional expenses.

Pros:
The car pick-up at Eugene Municipal Airport (EUG) was very friendly. Especially, the young lady (Amber) at the Dollar Rent Counter at the airport was very helpful. She upgraded our car on our request with reasonable additional charge. This change made our long journey from Eugene, OR to Los Angeles, CA very comfortable.
Cons:
Ref: Rental Record # 596198282; Vehicle: 2019 Chevrolet IMPALA License: CA 8JBG642 Car has in-built GPS, which was quite handy to go to different locations. But for a number new locations it didn't work as it was not updated. For example, it could not navigate us to some new locations in Folsom, CA. So we used our cellphone to drive to those locations. (GPS needs to be updated) The car drop-off was at LAX airport. We drop the car at the shown location. But it was difficult to locate the Dollar drop-off as there was no clear sign and we were in hurry to do it because the drop-off location was not in the airport. Shuttle takes the passenger from that location to the airport. We could see the Hetz sign only. However, on advised of the present staff we park the car at a location and left the car key inside the car as told. As per agreement, before handing over the car there, we filled the tank completely with the gas. The tank was full. (We wish if we could have some kind of written receipt for it. That the staff has taken the car in the same condition as it was handed to us. Gas tank is full, and we owe nothing.)
My flight got delayed by a full day and Kayak was no help. But I was able to call the Alamo desk directly and they fixed everything! The car I rented was perfect for my needs and the price was right!

The vehicle was returned with a full tank and the company lied and added a $108 surcharge to my bill. That’s an extreme malpractice by that company.
Car was not ready upon arrival even though we booked 2 months ahead. Had to wait over an hour after a very long flight, and had a 2 1/2 hour drive ahead of us. Agent was rude & seemed unconcerned. Car itself was fine, but customer service was poor.

Very convenient to have agents and cars right at Eugene airport. No shuttle. Agents very friendly. One small but important glitch. My agent forgot to return my driver's license and credit card to me. Fortunately, I realized this about 5 min after leaving the counter and could come back and get it.

The car I originally got from my reservation had expired tags. Oregon lifted their offer to be lenient on expired tags in January 2022. Not to mention if I were to get pulled over, I would get a ticket. If I got pulled over by a State Trooper, I could get a misdemeanor. Not willing to risk it, My companion and I had to fight to get a different car with non expired tags. Even paying for the class upgrade ourselves because all of the other cars in the class I made a reservation for that they had available had expired tags.

They let you choose premium cars online, but the woman at the counter said they don't actually have any cars and won't in the future, so they always put you in a different class. I only learned this after a few rentals getting something much larger than I asked for.
The staff was ready for us. They actually physically called the day before to confirm the rental and assured me they were ready for us, and they were ready us. Pick up was easy, drop off was seamless. Overall it was a great experience. I thank Enterprise for their product and service.

Pros:
The 6th Ave staff was very helpful at pickup. When I arrived to pickup a car, several other customers were there too. The staff kept working until after 5 to adequately take care of everyone. The staffer helping me gave me good advice on a full size upgrade as I'd reserved an economy car that wouldn't perform sufficiently in the mountains where I was headed. At dropoff, I accidentally went to the 11th Ave location. The fellow there was very agreeable about checking the Dodge Charger in for me, and it was so very quick.

Told me they wouldn't do a pick-up or drop-off unless it was for an insurance claim. Ran my card for more than the agreed-upon amount causing it to be declined. Once I got that cleared up they said they can only run the card once per day. Asked if they can break a 20 so I can get change for the bus to go down to Avis, and they said they had no cash. Thanks for nothing
