Overview

A sea of golden sand rolls right up to the edge of the highway here in the West Texas oil country. The Best Western Plus Monahans Inn & Suites sits beside it just off Interstate 20 in Monahans, Texas, out in the Permian Basin. Towering wind-sculpted dunes up to seventy feet high ripple across Monahans Sandhills State Park a few miles east, cared for by Texas Parks and Wildlife, where visitors rent discs to sled the slopes and watch the desert sunsets. The landscape shifts with the wind and is never quite the same twice. A free breakfast, a pool and an easy interstate location round out the stay, with dining and the highway close by. Sandboarders carve the slopes on rented discs, the campground and picnic spots sit tucked among the dunes, and an old ranch house and museum tell the area's railroad and oil story nearby. Pumpjacks and pipelines stretch to the horizon on every side. Odessa and Midland and the Permian Basin's oil museums lie a short drive east.
