Most kompetent and friendly staff i have ever met. Great neigborhood to walk around. Excellent Restaurants and overwehlming view.
The property is gorgeous, the rooms are very large and accommodating (more like apartments with yards!).
Volpaia Winery and Hotel does not seem to get along with the other business owners in the Volpaia town. They omitted recommendations for the *very good* local bar and restaurant (they are walking distance from your rooms), preferring to recommend a place 20 minutes drive away. If you stay here, try the local spots despite Volpaia's failure to recommend them.
The owner helped me greatly even before my stay, agreeing to keep my large suitcase for a whole week when I was passing through Chianti. I expected a much smaller place, and got all to myself a huge 2-story, 2-bedroom apartment at an unbelievably reasonable price. The apartment is very bright and taken good care of. The double beds were very comfortable (well, the one I slept in was).
There is no internet, and most of the time, you cannot get a signal while inside, whether for the phone or data. Which can be considered a reasonable drawback to living in a 12th c. castle - those walls were not built with internet in mind. I can only think of two small improvements it would be good to have: 1. Window stoppers. The winds are high at the top of the hill, and if you want to sleep with a window open, you will want to invent your own way to prevent it from flapping open and shut all the time (I used a broomstick in the kitchen, and made a contraption out of 2 hangers in the bedroom but having stoppers in place would have been easier) 2. A couple more hooks in the bathroom would always be a welcome addition. Barring those minor details, everything was great. Would definitely stay again.
The location is superb. 1 minute from the bar and restaurants of Volpaia with a beautiful view. The staff were very helpful when we had issues.
The beds were terrible - not much more than a camp bed really! One of ours collapsed and when it was replaced it looked like it had been welded together before! The terrace area was very muddy/stoney - we had our little girl with us and it wasn't possible for her to play out there because of the stones. We appreciate the weather had been unseasonably bad but I can't help but think paving it over would help if there is a lot of rain. Even when it was dry we couldn't enjoy it out there. And the pool was closed - again because of the weather but a real shame - we weren't notified that it would be closed either.
