Pros: A must in Takayama. Everything was perfect, from the loveliest staff met in Japan, to the best restaurant experience we had in Japan, to a private Onsen, to being hidden in the woods with only nature surrounding, confortable beds, a very convenient shuttle service available at any time, and last but not least a sense of community with the other clients. By far one of the most memorable hotel experiences in our lives as a family, and definetly recommend it to everyone.
9.6 Excellent

They came to pick us up from the train station and prepared the dinner after the booking was done. If you are coming to Takayama do not think further it is your ryokan!
Cons: Nothing to say.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a true gem of an experience. We opted for the breakfast and dinner meals with our stay and i recommend you do the same because it is out of this world! Superb in everyway. A memorable, delicious and delightful experience. Book now!!!!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was great, staffs were amazingly friendly & helpful. Location was perfect with a great view from my room facing the river view.
Cons: Nothing. It was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's difficult to start on what was it that we enjoyed the most, because we had a wonderful stay at Yatsusankan. The staff were kind and helpful, the baths are lovely and breakfast and dinner was delicious (we only had dinner there one day as we were expecting to arrive later on the first day, but it's an experience we won't forget! Breakfast was also abundant both in flavor and quantity). We were on our honeymoon and it was, by far, the most relaxing experience we had on our journey through Japan. Wish we had had more days to stay there. Hida Furukawa is also a lovely town, and Hida Takayama is only 15 min. away by train. Couldn't recommend it enough, thank you so much for everything.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fairy tale day/night spent at this ryokan. Very friendly service & fantastic inside interior made it a very special and unforgettable experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Extraordinary service from the minute we arrived. Someone ran out in the rain and parked our car and bought us inside with an umbrella, took our shoes to clean and gave us a welcome drink in a lovely room while we checked in in comfort. Staff very friendly, onsens amazing, room gorgeous, authentic, spacious and clean. The breakfast was amazing! The best hotel we stayed in Japan!
Cons: Nothing, it was all amazing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The kaiseki meals are beautifully presented and delicious. The Onsen are beautiful, and very well provisioned. Our host took us out into the countryside at night to watch fireflies which was a great experience.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor Onsen was wonderful and pretty, with a hot tub probably 10 degrees hotter then the pool. They had shots of Sake available outside in case you got too cold??? The room was large...we had to ask for a double futon. All together the ryokan is in a sleepy little town....nothing to do there but enjoy the spa.
Cons: The dinner was perhaps too Japanese for our Western palates...portions were tiny and most of the dishes were simply not to our taste. This was not our first dining experience in Japan...so we were very disappointed especially since the ratings were so high. We had much better fare in other ryokan accommodations that were far less expensive.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so warm and friendly, even before we arrived they were in touch to ensure we had a wonderful stay. As it was our honeymoon they gave us a lovely gift and even took our photo and had it printed as a special momento of our stay. We enjoyed dinner at the property one evening and it was amazing! So many wonderful dishes! Breakfast was also spectacular!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were picked up and droppd off at the station before and after our stay The kaiseki meals were delicious Location was convenient to the sights we wanted to see They offered free sake tasting in the Onsen area
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the best hotel we visited in Japan, hands down. Staff was friendly and spoke decent English, and the meals were incredible. Hot springs were clean and nice as well!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really enjoyed the river and garden view from our ground floor room. This is a traditional home with amazing interiors and traditional decorations. We had a private toilet with sink even tough the booking said that toilet and bathroom were shared, so that was a welcome surprise. Enjoyed the large japanese style bath that you can use on your own. The elderly owners were very sweet and accommodating.
Cons: The windows could use some upgrade. As far as futon beds go, these were not the most comfortable ones.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The included dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the private onsen was great! The room was lovely and so were the staff. I think we got everything out of our stay that I could have wanted.
Cons: I really can't think of anything I disliked!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this ryokan was a most impressive experience in itself! The space in the building is very beautifully organized, the owners were extremely friendly and helpful, and the kaisekis we had were the most exquisite meals during our trip. If you want to relax for a couple of days and enjoy staying at a ryokan, this is an excellent choice!
Cons: It is not fare to complain with all the warmth we saw from the owners, but potential customers must be aware that staying at a traditional ryokan implies some rules, which you have to follow. For example, there is a curfew (from 11 p.m. onwards); the beds are made (by the staff) at the same place where the table is placed during the daytime. As a consequence, you have to sleep and stay awake according to the customary pattern of the house, not just your whim.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food is excellent. Admittedly a lot, but excellent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A wonderful warren of traditional Japanese rooms. Dinner was very good, breakfast great. The owners were friendly and helpful. Our room had a river view with a bathroom. Superb.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you are staying in Takayama and looking for a traditional ryokan experience, then this is for you. The people working there are so warm and make you feel at home. Would definitely recommend with dinner and breakfast for the full experience.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A lovely stay in a traditional ryokan. We loved it! The staff was sweet, efficient and helpful. The location was great and the food excellent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was one of the best places we stayed in Japan. The staff are amazing and make you feel at home. Definitely include japanese breakfast and dinner with your stay, you wont be disappointed (or hungry after!). Served a banquet to our rooms and everything was delicious. Onsen is fantastic, turns out we were the only guests for our 2 night stay so we could use it for as long as we needed which was great after a long hike around the area. Couldnt recommend this place more, made such a change from the city. Also very close to the morning market and the centre of Takayama
Cons: Loved everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This Ryokan was amazing. It exceeded my expectations. The room, the location, the staff, it was a quintessential Japanese inn experience and was a highlight of my family's trip. The garden view room was plenty of room for a family of four. The breakfast was delicious and the family Onsen was so much fun to experience.
Cons: I can't think of anything we would change.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese hospitality. The staff is extremely friendly and so dedicated to serving their guests and explaining Japanese traditions and cuisine. Very well located next to the river, within a 10 min walk radius to Takayama’s top attractions.
Cons: N/A

Pros: The food was amazing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great food Excellent service Luxurios yet authentic room/suite
Cons: A bit long bus drive
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The wholehearted service from its staff and the food is perfect, I had a great time there with my hubby. I want to stay for one more night but it’s a bit too expensive comparing with the other hotels with onsen in the nearby area. However, we have our own private onsen in our room which is super convenient and we had great baths there.
Cons: Maybe the location (in 福地溫泉)although it’s fine for us as we have a car but I guess it’s a little bit not very convenient for the people or travellers without any cars
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Tatami bed very comfortable Open air bath very peaceful
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese onsen ryokan. Quiet, comfortable, clean. Excellent Japanese cuisine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is one of the most stunning places I have ever stayed in. The breakfast and dinner were superb. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We loved everything about this place.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most exception dinner, delectable dishes made with local ingredients. One of the best onsen ryokan dinners and breakfast I have had! The public onsen has a beautiful open view of the serene mountain surroundings, we never had to share with anyone and the ryokan was quiet and peaceful. The best service by the hotel staff.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent and high quality.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very great location and services
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable.
Cons: It’s a pity we didn’t have the chance to enjoy the dinner or breakfast in the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are very friendly and attentive. Beautifully decorated. Only a few minutes from train/bus station. Close to everything you'd need. We used the private bath twice- although you have to pay for the private bath it was worthwhile. Would recommend.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this Ryokan is certainly different from staying in a western hotel. It is more of an experience rather than just a place to stay for the night. You get to dress up, walk around, and read some books in living area/lobby while in your yukata. Private bath is nice for couples too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are very friendly and welcoming, the rooms are very stylish the pictures on booking don't quite make the place justice. The location is great next to the train station and yet close to the town center. Traditional breakfast is as good as the other reviews say
Cons: The walls are quite thin however it is part of the traditional characteristics of the building
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff who were always friendly and helpful.
Cons: The washing machine takes 4 hours! Too long.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The welcoming staff and the service in general was overall very good. The inside of the ryokan is pretty, the room big and comfortable.
Cons: 2 details but rooms for improvement :) The air conditioning in the room goes straight to the bed which forced us to turn it off at night and then it was very warm. The last schedule for breakfast is 8 am, a bit too early for our jet lagged baby...
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Strategically located to almost everything, Cosmetics were great
Cons: Price a bit high
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing stay, you get a return on what you pay for.
Cons: Western breakfast consisted of one egg only, Standard throughout europe and the western countries is 2 eggs plus there was no bread just croissants. Japanese style breakfast was AWESOME :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Onsen (hot spring), breakfast Japanese style, standard Japanese (clean, nice staff etc)
Cons: Value for money not completely in balance. Most Riokans are expensive but this one feels a little bit to big (more a hotel with riokan as their concept) compared to previous smaller riokans we have stayed.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. A short walk from the station. Accommodation is lovely. The onsen is special. We will be back there again.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The rooms are great, breakfast is awesome. Although small there is an onsen in the facility. It was idealy located within Takayama and city center as well as the station could be reached easily within minutes.
Cons: There are tons of rules that are explained to you at the second you arrive, and beside the fact that you'll have to read an entire book to know them all, the overall effect of this presentation is that you don't feel welcome... at all ! Plus, if you already paid your breakfast and planned to sleep late in the morning be warned : last call for eating is 8:00, and in case you still don't care, know that you won't be refunded.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This ryokan was beyond our expectations. We loved the staff who were attentive without being obtrusive. The breakfasts were wonderful, the baths were private and never crowded. Everything was just perfect. Very close to the train station AND Takayama is the perfect town for four days to relax and enjoy. The mere civility and graciousness was a vacation in itself.
Cons: Nothing could have been better. My husband needs to go light on soy products and had the choice of a Western breakfast each day. We also had the choice of breakfast time. They had umbrellas and bikes as well as much information about any local interest.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was OK and owners were kind.
Cons: As I said before everything was OK.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Delicious food, every friendly staff and owner
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's a lovely place, beautiful spacious rooms and very good breakfast and dinner. It's very well managed and the personnel is very friendly and helpful. We had to leave one day earlier and without asking they refunded the last night to us. That was so friendly and I did not expect that at all, it was our loss to have to leave earlier but they gave this amazing service, thank you for that!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is very confortable, also the futon. We were lucky because We enjoyed the onsen experience with few person (one time also alone). But if there are many people then it Can be not so good and relaxing. The staff is very kind.
Cons: The view from our room was like a garbage deposit or something close to. We had to stay with the window closed and imagine to have mountains behind it. If you pay 400€ for one night I think you want something different also in the background. We suggest to have the kaiseki dinner and the traditional Japanese breakfast only to those who feel ready to try it. I liked the dinner, less the breakfast (fish, soup, vegetables and so on while we are used to have brioches and cappuccino). My girlfriend none of them. Even if all was good at the end, I think 400€ is still too much for what you have back.
5.8 Okay
Cons: Expensive for the value. Tourist place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place, uniqe and special, authentic japanic atmosphere, the team are lovly, every thing is just clean and neat. Great ecperience
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast Loved the free bikes offered by hotel It helped a lot for the visit of the town

Pros: Hotel people were very helpful Hotel is clear, new, with a small kitchen which could be useful for a family. Very good location
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location is the first thing I loved about this property! It’s close to literally anything, and the station is just down the road! It was well-equipped, especially the kitchen. The living area was lovely and felt really social and homey. They even had extra pillows in case anyone wanted one
Cons: It doesn’t have a lift, but it’s just two flights of stairs!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location between the old town and the train station, enclosed sleeping space, plenty of showers, open and inviting feel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was nice and helpful. Walking distance from most interesting areas in the city, and good possibility for food
Cons: Very complicated to park around the area and parking spaces were very expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very close to Takayama Station (less than 5min walk). There are many lovely cafes nearby! The staff were lovely and the rules that were in place were for courtesy to the other travelers. For instance, if packing after 10pm we were asked to do so in the lobby (which is on the same floor) which was not any additional hassle for me and just generally lended for a quieter sleeping experience. Mini light and locker in each capsule. Provided with towel. The showers and toilet were lovely. The common area had really lovely natural light coming in from the windows and was lovely for journaling.
Cons: Nothing in particular! There’s no elevator to the 3rd floor where the reception is which may be relevant to some
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff and everything clean and in good shape. We enjoyed our stay.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff in particular were very wonderful and welcoming, and made some excellent recommendations for restaurants that wouldn’t be busy but provided great food
Cons: The hostel was a bit stuffy and hot but it’s also summer so I can’t complain too much
10.0 Excellent
Cons: Staff was extrrmely helpfull, roof top pretty nice, clean, small but for a day or two in the area this was perfect for my needs and it was well located.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The set-up is cozy & well planned. Though a small kitchen but you could use practically that's needed. Friendly and v helpful staff. It would be perfect if only they have a lift. Highly recommended for visit to Hida Takayama. I would like to stay again.
Cons: No lift
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely spotless, with a good location between the train station and the old town. Staff is very kind and, knowing the area well, can give good information about places to visit.

Pros: Location (right in the old town center), onsen facilities, shuttle service, service

Pros: They provided us with a choice of cute tabi socks and welcome treats upon our arrival They had three different Onsen areas to choose from, including a special woman’s Onsen with tea lounge The kaiseki meals were delicious There was a wonderful girls day doll display while we were there Location was convenient to the morning market, shopping and restaurants They offered shuttle service to the train station We booked a room with a private bath which was amazing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location and good breakfast
Cons: One of the dinner we chose was a steak dinner which was served by The Alice, not a proper restaurant in town. The meal was just average and we were not impressed as Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is an excellent ryokan. We were expecting a real onsen experience but unfortunately we were given a jacuzzi intsead.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location for exploring Takayama. Staff couldn’t do enough to help us during our stay. Expertly cooked food served in our private dinning room. Bikes available for sightseeing.
Cons: Having to leave

Cons: Quite expensive but worth it.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: their service and kaiseki meals are excellent, they go extra mile to make your stay worthwhile, very detailed and very clean hotel indeed
Cons: nothing, everything was wonderful
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ambiance along with the care shown to us in setting the scene for our Japanese experience. Nothing, every detail was included from the welcome, the introduction to education re dressing in a kimono. The food was exquisitely prepared & even the futon was comfortable - it had to be after relaxing in the outdoor onsen - a unique experience.
Cons: Breakfast could have been a little more European although that would be carping.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A perfect Ryokan experience, leaving my family, especially my son with an unforgettable memory. Thanks everyone at the Honjin hiranoya Kachoan, especially my room attendant Manami(麻奈美)!My boy likes this pretty sister very much. I am looking forward to the next trip to Japan and hope that my family will come back here again.
Cons: It would be better if hotel could inform the guests in advance more detailed introductions about the Ryokan.

Pros: Kei met us when the shuttle bus arrived at the ryokan. He checked us in and showed us the room and then served us two dinners and two breakfasts in our private dining room. He was great. The atmosphere of the ryokan was pleasant and seemed very authentic. The food was fantastic. We had no trouble communicating with anyone. The TV had only Japanese channels, so we got a break from TV.
Cons: It’s not within walking distance of the sights, but the shuttle bus is very efficient and we did not need to use a taxi.

Pros: The private Onsen was delightful. The staff were exceptional.
Cons: The location was a bit out of the way, so we were unable to walk anywhere. However, a free shuttle bus to the station and nearby morning market was useful.
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Fantastic experience to do once (and more!) in a life. Relaxing place and wonderful hospitality. Madame Ochiai was all the time at our side and disposal. She has been so kind and gentle (moreover, she speeks a very good English). We slept in a futon bed and a japanese room. I will recommend this place to all my friends. GREAT STAFF.

They have a small foot bath near the entrance of the Ryokan, public onsens for guests and you can also book a private onsen. The staff were very friendly and are there to help you in any way. Overall, we were very happy with our stay!

Pros: Staff were very friendly and nice tho they don't speak a lot of English, they tried their best to help us. The environment was very pretty with traditional Japanese design. Breakfast and dinner had a big variety of food which let us tried different things, we were amazed with all the little utensil that they provided. Onsen was nice and comfortable with public and private one, a very relaxing place indeed.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great
Cons: Beds were slightly uncomfortable as not used to sleeping on the mat
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hot springs were fabulous.
Cons: Bedding was a bit uncomfortable compared to other Ryokans we stayed at.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We chose this onsen ryokan in Fukuchi Onsen area because we wanted a more quiet natural setting -- and we were not disappointed! The rotenburo (outside) onsens (both public and private ones) were all beautifully integrated with nature and landscape outside which included rushing creeks, the inside onsens were also nice. The ryokan (inn) itself had a lot of architectural character, our room for two was very spacious with a separate sitting and sleeping area, both the dinner and breakfast was fantastic. They made mochi every morning and let the guest participate in the pounding.
Cons: NA
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An amazing old building incorporated into bigger facilities. Onsen baths were great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is located in a peacfull part of the forest, which adds to the great and relaxing atmosphere. The staff is attentive and welcoming, and it seems as if their only wish is to make you comfortable. The facilities are great, including the onsens, the food and the room itself, which is spacious and traditional. Overall, we had a unieque experience and we would recommed a visit to anyone who whishes to get some break from touring.
Cons: A sign in english outside would make it easier to find
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property. Mix of traditional with modern touches. Pristinely clean. The baths are beautiful, especially the public one and the smaller ones by the river. Dinner was really an experience.
Cons: Nothing. Was lovely.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a beautiful mountain compound with three awesome bath areas. It was so serene to be there and the food was delicious. Our stay here was the highlight of our trip to japan.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Soene was the highlight of our trip to Japan and the best accommodation experience we have ever had. The natural setting and architecture is stunning, and left us in awe. Surrounded by mountains, lush forest, fishing streams and small gardens of the surrounding village, it exudes serenity. During our stay in July, the hydrangeas were blooming, which we could enjoy from the lovely garden view in our room and from the hallways. The onsen were wonderful - private onsen with both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as an undercover but outdoor public onsen with a leafy forest view, and two public rotenburo overlooking the river. Our room was large, elegant and comfortable, and we loved wearing the soft samue that were provided. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, and carefully explained by the attentive staff (who made us feel really welcome despite our lack of Japanese). Watching the fireflies was magical - a truly memorable experience.
Cons: Nothing - it was incredible. Thank you Soene!

Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff who speaks good English. I had booked a single room and found a personal, handwritten note and an origami crane in my room upon arrival. A very nice gesture which makes you feel welcome straight away. A very well equipped kitchen with free coffee and tea, upon arrival I also received a 50¥-discount-coupon for the little coffee shop next to the reception. Unfortunetaly, i didn't manage to get some coffee there but it looked to me like high quality coffee.
Cons: The guesthouse is a little bit off the main station but within walking distance of restaurants and the area with the traditional houses.

Pros: 1. The staff (two ladies) is so friendly and extremely helpful! They are both eager to have a chat with the guests. I've felt very welcome. 2. The location is perfect: right next to the bus/train station. 3. The guest house is very old. It looks traditional Japanese and has a cute atmosphere. It's also very clean. 4. The accommodation provides you with a lot of info on what to do in the area. 5. Good value for money. Thank you for having me! :)
Cons: Nothing to dislike about this place. The only thing I can imagine, is that some (western) guests with serious back problems find the beds a bit hard, as they are traditional japanese. For me, this wasn't a problem though.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly boss and staff. They made this trip more valuable. Cozy blanket and you could experience inside of Japanese old house.
Cons: Nothing but shower room was only one. You need to wait.

This is the first time I have spoken to so many people and made new friends by staying at a guesthouse! Lots of great recommendations for food, sightseeing and activities by the staff.
Cons: The toilets had no washlet system. Also the toilet om the second floor has slightly bad ventilation as compared to the one on the first floor.

Pros: Lovely hosts at this pretty accommodation. We enjoyed our stay immensely! We had the evening meal one night which was delicious. Picked up and dropped off to Takayama sites and train station whenever needed. Overall highly recommended.
Cons: The rooms are simple and could do with an update.

7.1 Good
Pros: Really nice quiet location, trees view from the window. Really nice hida beef dinner, good and big meals (breakfast and dinner), even though not thoroughly japanese in style. Really friendly and helpful staff. Clean toilet and bathroom.
Cons: Room way too hot and dry! And couldn't regulate the temperature by ourselves. Was stupid of me not to ask about it, but the first night we had temperature of 20 degrees C, the second night was 22 degrees!!! Had to open the window to cool off a bit, but there were no mosquito net so we were afraid of insects coming in.. I hope that upon request they can lower the temperature.. because we were really in an oven! Really nice stay but felt a bit overpriced overall, probably due to the Takayama spring festival that was going on during our stay.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: + Friendly and helpful host family + Pension with a lot charm + Always a shuttle Service available (if required) + located little outside of the center
Cons: not really to complain, you need to keep in mind that it is 4 km from the train station, but the shuttle service works perfectly
7.9 Good
Pros: Hotel was far away from town. Owner was very friendly and gracious and picked us up at the train station and returned us to the station the next day. House is full of items from Spain where his parents lived many years ago. Area was very quiet and beds were comfy.

Featured amenities include luggage storage, a water dispenser, and a vending machine. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The facilites are beautifully design, the staff is very attentive and the food -specially the dinner- is really good. Although the location is a bit far away from the station (30-35min walk), they have shuttle buses that take you to the city center back and forth every 30 min. but you have to reserve it. For me the highlight of this hotel was the dinner.
Cons: Most of the staff don't speak english so it's hard to communicate. There was a technical problem with the private 'onsen' and the water was cold, so I had to wait a couple of hours to use it. The staff apologised many times and did everything possible to fix this situation, so at the end it only caused a temporary discomfort.
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Excellent ryokan. Take the ground floor room with the private hot spring bath for pure opulence and privacy.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in a room with a private onsen. The room was very comfortable and the food was outstanding.
Cons: It’s a bit far from the historic district. Probably too far for most to walk, although there is a shuttle.
7.1 Good
Pros: Something different from the large hotels in the big cities! Friendly staff!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food there (dinner and breakfast which was included) is amazing! That in itself was worth the price. We also had a massage chair in the room which we sat in for hours and they provided beautiful kimonos for us to lounge around in.
Cons: The shower needs to be higher, it only has a waist-high attachment which means we have to sit down to shower, not sure if its because its the traditional way to shower but the option of a higher attachment would be good.
6.3 Good
Pros: Room is large
Cons: Food is not too good
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was good and varied. We tried things we never had before. Beds were very comfortable.
Cons: Dinner was a bit rushed considering it’s a degustation menu. A bit far from the town center
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional ryokan, nicest experience ever. The private Onsen was just amazing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect! A bit expensive but worth it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely beautiful traditional Japanese ryokan. Once you have taken off your shoes at the entrance, you are in a tranquil Japanese oasis. I have never slept so well on a floor (futon on tatami mats to be precise). And having sliding screens to our own patio and private Onsen was such a treat. We also made use of the public Onsen baths (single sex) - so relaxing. As for the food, the first night we had a fabulous traditional kaiseki dinner of multiple Japanese courses, while the second night we again had a number of courses but the headline act was shabu shabu to cook ourselves over individual burners. Fantastic experience and when you factor in that it’s half board and Onsen is free to use, well worth it.
Cons: It was all lovely.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location, the facilities and the friendly staff.
Cons: Everything was good!!
7.5 Good
Pros: Location is very convenient. Staff are friendly. This type of accommodation makes easy to enter in contact with other travellers. Organization in the kitchen was very good, while in similar places you could probably expect some chaos
Cons: If you look for a hostel is perfect. It will not meet your expectations if that you are looking for is a hotel (it is not). Otherwise, the property is expensive compared to what it offers (it is true that it was at the peak of the season). Anyway for the price you could get a far better room in a European capital
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location, 5mins from Station and easy walk to centre of town. Lots of eating places nearby. Staff friendly and helpful. Spotless well equipped kitchen and area to eat.
Cons: Nothing
7.9 Good
Pros: The location is great, near bus/train station. Staff is nice. There's a kitchen and dining area. It was good overall.
Cons: The internet is slow during peak times. Room size is small but we got the small double room so understandable. The bathroom is small too, no toilet bidet.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, cheapest offer in the city at the time of booking, helpful staff and quite confortable room for a hostel (we had a two bed room with private bathroom).
Cons: Nothing to complain about.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was VERY traditional Japanese. This is a ryokan so it should be expected but it was hard to look forward to every morning!
Cons: The rooms and even lobby are very dated. Old lady wall paper and furnishings!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The lady who brought us to our rooms and later hosted our dinner was very pleasant and made us feel at home. Dinner was quite a lux experience for us - delicious, visually pleasing, interesting and memorable. Room was spacious- there was a separate sitting area and closet space to hang our clothes. Coffee and water/flavoured water available at the lobby.
Cons: Wish the toilet/bathroom was bigger.
7.9 Good
Pros: I did like there location.
Cons: I did not like breakfast and small room.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location was fantastic, and staff were very kind and professional! The dinner served in the room was delicious! The onsen at the hotel and the sister hotel in town are a great treat, but worth noting for couples that they are always separated for men and women, which means you end up having to go alone. It's still very relaxing, but we had hoped to enjoy it together.
Cons: I found the price very high for the quality of the rooms. The room itself was quite basic and a bit run down. The bathroom was smaller than the smallest we had seen in Japan, making it hard to use. We wanted to treat ourselves to the ryokan experience after sleeping in cheaper hostels in our trip, and it was the least enjoyable nights unfortunately. The futons on the floor were very thin, pillows quite hard, and even my husband who can sleep standing found it very hard to sleep.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great dinner, fabulous breakfast and wonderful staff
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location, great stuff, great food Made our Japanese experience perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff was exceptionally attentive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was our first stay in a Ryokan ever and we took a small Japanese room with the halfboard plan. The food was very delicious and the dinner service in our room was perfect! The Ryokan has a small hot spring in the ground floor and offers you the complimentary the use the bigger hot spring in the partner hotel Alpina (just a 5 minutes walk). The staff was always very kind and helpful and we felt welcome and home from the first minute on. We can definitely recommend it!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A classic ryokan-style inn. Clean and in a good location, easy walking distance to all sights and the train/bus station. The staff were friendly.
Cons: The onsen (hot bath) is very small. It's possible to use the sister hotel, which has a rooftop onsen, but that means walking a few blocks.

7.5 Good
Pros: I love the traditional environment
5.8 Okay
Pros: Great position. The new carpet that was being fitted whilst were were staying.
Cons: If you are looking for a dip into Japanese culture by staying in Ryokan style accommodation, then this hotel will disappoint. It has the 'shabby' but the 'chic' is a bit thin on the ground. The room decor was careworn. The bed was a frame of wooden laths, topped with three small western mattress panels, topped with a futon mattress. Which of these components contributed the lumpiness is open to conjecture. The rack rate is mid to upper mid rate. There were a lot of younger travellers there that may have enjoyed the quasi-Japanese 'vibe', but if you are old enough to need a chair to put your socks on, then it is just uncomfortable.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Location is good, close to the station and close to the city main attractions.
Cons: Room is dark and narrow and the hotel in general is dirty (onsen included). Bad quality for money (room rates are very high for what is offered).
6.7 Good
Pros: well located, close to the main street and to the train station.
Cons: beds were pretty uncomfortable, second night was bad for our back and were willing to leave.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great traditional style inn and onsen, well located for station and sights. Room was very comfortable and slightly larger than other rooms we’ve had in Japan with a small sitting area.
Cons: My partner is a bigger guy and felt the joins in the 3 smaller mattresses that made up the bed but not a big deal.
7.5 Good
Pros: It was spacious, quiet and had a view of the river.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Typical place Onsen Size of room
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: location
Cons: We were really excited about having a relaxing experience at a Ryokan. But it turned out to be quite the opposite. Upon arrival we were told that there were no food services at all (no dinner, no breakfast) so our chance of having dinner in our yukatas in the building after a long day of walking was gone. Same for next morning. The only option given to us was a sad-looking croissant in a plastic bag. They should remove the pictures of nice meals on the booking site if they are not offering them, since we decided based on them. Beds: not real futons. They are 3 little pieces of matress hold together on a piece of wood (we hit the wood several times with our toes!) and when you sleep you can feel the joints. Real futons would be much better!! Tiny , hard pillows too. Sound: I was awaken at 1am by loud laughing from next door’s room. I could even see light coming from the room thru the wardrope joins. No elevator. Building carpet old and worn. Ofuro (bath) smelled like kerosene. We felt rushed during checkin, pressured to pay and go upstairs. Not friendly at all. I would never stay there again & would not recommend it at all. For us it felt like a bed & breakfast (but without breakfast) !!! And very expensive. No value for money at all! :(
7.9 Good
Pros: Close to rail station, only takes 5 mins walk. Nice staff, provide free luggage storage.
Cons: No elevator to second floor.

Pros: Excellent location and speedy check in and out.
7.1 Good
Pros: Excellent location, near takayama station.
4.6 Okay
Pros: The location was good, near the railway station. Front staff could be friendlier.
Cons: The beds and pillows were rock hard. The room was tiny.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was delicious and enough. Very friendly staff.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Across the street from the station. Near to the main shopping streets.
Cons: There building next door was under renovations. It was a bit noisy and dusty at times.
7.9 Good
Pros: The location is right across from Takayama station which makes it easy to access. Also right above the Toyota car rental shop.
Cons: Small size of the room but that is standard Japan hotel room size. So it was expected to be crampy.
6.5 Good
Pros: The location is outstanding -- directly across the street from the train station. If you are staying just one night, this is ideal.
Cons: Made the mistake of reserving a "twin" room which has two very, very narrow beds. If you are a couple, be sure to reserve a queen or something like that. My mistake. Even for Japan, this is a very small room, so tight for a couple with luggage.
6.3 Good
Pros: The location of the hotel is excellent! It is across the train station so it is very convenient.
Cons: Hotel did not meet my expectations in terms of value for money. The room is too small; not enough space to move around, to put luggage etc.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Good location near station
Cons: Wildly overpriced, tiny room even by Japanese standards, small hard bed with rock-like pillows, unfriendly staff, breakfast expensive and no variety. No bath in room or onsen in hotel
8.3 Excellent
Pros: near the JR eki and the nohi basu center
7.5 Good
Pros: Location is perfect.
Cons: The room gave me some allergy. I think they rarely open the windows to renew the air.
