If you are renting during the winter months, the recommended vehicle is an intermediate SUV with all-wheel drive. This will give you more control during winter driving but still allow you the maneuverability to navigate busy city streets during heavy traffic. All-wheel drive is easier to use for inexperienced winter drivers than four-wheel drive, as the rotation rate of the tires adjusts to your turns and makes the drive smoother.

The freeways surrounding Springfield have a speed limit of 55mph due to their proximity to urban regions. Within the city, most streets in residential and business districts have a speed limit of 25mph. Major roads, such as Liberty Street, have higher limits of 35mph to 45mph.

The Springfield Parking Authority operates eight parking garages and lots throughout the city, with rates of about $2 per hour and slightly higher or lower rates depending on proximity to the city center and the Union Street Train Depot. If you are parking on the street, meters have similar rates, but check that you are not parking on a snowplow route in the winter if you are planning to park overnight. You do not want to be stuck shoveling your car out of the snow.

Though the Westover Airport is just to the north of Springfield, there are no car rentals in the airport itself. However, there is an Enterprise Rent A Car and an All-Star Car And Truck Rental right outside the airport.
