Great experience at a Ryokan
We loved our room, it was a traditional tatami room with a great robotic toilet and sink. The indoor onsens was a little hot, but the outdoor ones were perfect! The meal was really a great spread--however the amount was overwhelming. We thought the kaiseki food was really delicious, but after about 10 dishes, they brought our steak which was a bit fatty. Unfortunately we left food because it was just so much (and we're from Texas!). We partook in the geisha experience, which was great fun. We were told the price would decrease based on how many people participated--but apparently it was counting only the adults, so the calculation changed at the end from what I was expecting. We were driven back to the station which was great, and we had transportation from the station as well. The orientation to the area by Tyler was great too.
We didn't feel comfortable when being guilted about our meal. After being asked several times about removing the dishes despite food remaining, it just was awkward--but then the owner (the American) came to us to pull out our futons, but also I think to see why we left food. We said everything was absolutely delicious, but we just simply cannot eat that amount of food--and he commented that the chef doesn't really do the tempura type meals insinuating that we would have eaten it if it had been 'elementary' Japanese food. At the end, we offered to leave an umbrella that we no longer needed for other guests who find themselves in the rain, and he made an awkward comment about taking umbrellas become like unwanted rabbits multiplying--again, just another awkward conversation that took away from the traditional experience.
