10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hostel was really nice! The host was very friendly and gave some advice for seightseeing. The hostel was clean, calm and had a kitchen and also a romantic roof top!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most comfy hostel in my Kyushu trip and very big area for you to put luggage and walk around. Love all the details of the hostel! Everything is so cute ! And also love the heater in the shoes cabins! I wet my shoes because it was raining the day before, the host ask me to put my shoes in the cabinet. And the next day, they are dry! And I can wear them out again ! The bed is super comfy for me and I am find with the pillow too.
Cons: Need to bring your own shampoo and bath gel, they don’t provide free one but you do can buy with them if you didn’t bring it. Is not a big issue for me.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was so beautiful, the room, shower, toilet, the whole hostel was really nice!! And the people were so nice and kind. Love it there. When I will go to Kumamoto again I will definitely choose this hostel!
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The decoration, the design and the hostess of the house are really excellent.
Cons: The one who stayed in the same room snored really loud XD
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Thank you for a lovely stay. The most comfortable beds on my trip so far, lovely living room and decor and great advice and service. Really enjoyed my time here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The personel was wonderful, they helped us plan our trip, were always there for whatever we needed. And the hostel was just magical. Love the place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was one of my favorite hostels to stay at! Staff was very friendly and spoke english very well. The kitchen was small but efficient, I very much appreciated the free coffee and tea. The shampoo, body soap, and laundry soap were cleverly stored in gatchapon machines and reasonably priced. The location is very convenient and close to downtown, Kumamoto castle, and transit. I especially LOVED the dyeing activity; my t-shirt turned out very lovely and I appreciate the personalized souvenir to take home.
Cons: No major complaints. Sometimes the motion sensor lights would turn off before I was done in the room, but this was a minor inconvenience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a special and thoughtful hostel. I absolutely loved the decor and tatami style rooms. The terrace was beautiful both during the day and also when lit up with the fairy lights at night. I loved the dyeing workshop they had available for the guests! It was lots of fun to experience this style of wax dyeing and to be able to bring home something to remember Kumamoto by! My stay was ever so relaxing and I loved every part of it!! Such good air con in the sweltering Kumamoto summer heat.
Cons: Nothing! However it isn’t the most social hostel, but more of a relaxing hotel with shared spaces.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely beautifully furnished, they thought of everything and have great kitchen facilities, a place to relax, beautiful bathrooms, and lovely bedrooms. Doing the indigo dying is so much fun and creates a unique and incredible souvenir. The staff are so friendly and helpful and really work hard to make sure you enjoy your stay. This place was a joy to stay in and great value for being a hostel.
Cons: It was great, free towels provided would make it perfect, but understandable that it’s a way for them to save costs. It’s a fabulous place to stay regardless.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything.

Pros: Good location clean and comfortable
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were exceptionally polite and professional. When I asked the way to the nearby park, they even gave me the free entrance cards. Also for us (2 ADULT AND 1 2YO KID),we added a futon. Because the tatami area is connect with the bed area. So adding a futon simply give us huge space to sleep and I didn't need to worry my son falling down from the bed. They even have free spring (both public ones and family one).

Pros: The beds and the bathroom facilities were excellent. The warm welcome and help with our taxi.
Cons: There was no restaurant in the hotel so even getting breakfast was a real problem. It is located right under the Kumamoto airport flight path so we had planes going over all the time.

Pros: It is a very convenient ryokan. Really nothing to complain about, ultra clean, very nice hosts always available. And the japanese breakfast was really good.
Cons: Climbing the steep stairs with a heavy luggage was quite tough. It is also a little bit far from the city center by walking
9.6 Excellent
Pros: breakfast is really worth the 700 yen, if I could’ve added dinner I would do that too. Owner is very welcoming, speaks English well and everything is clean. It is accessable by car but harder if you are taking public transit. There’s not many stores around either as its in a local residencial area.
Cons: no shower cap and comb

Cons: Nothing to dislike!

Pros: We were allocated a larger room than originally booked as the large room was free so we appreciated the additional space. The en-suite facilities were accessed off our entry corridor. The Japanese breakfast was exceptionally tasty and beautifully presented.
Cons: The location is a little way out of the central town area but easily reached by the efficient tram system.

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Guesthouse Asobi-Gokoro Kumamoto-City - Hostel in Kumamoto, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Kumamoto Castle and Kumamoto Station Tourist Information Center.
7.9 Good
Pros: Nice host that can help you out with bookings and recommendations for restaurants. Close to the main station (10-15 minutes walk or 800 yen with taxi). Bathrooms and showers where nice and clean, also a big kitchen with good equipment.
Cons: A bit far from the city center, but not a problem if you’re in Kumamoto to see the surroundings as we did (Mount Aso). There are still many restaurants to choose from and a large super market close by. The Japanese sleeping mattresses was a little bit thin compared to other places we’ve been to, I thought it was a bit uncomfortable but my boyfriend had no trouble sleeping so it depends on how picky you are :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were great and had great recommendations For local restaurants
Cons: It was a little hard to find
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice and helpful staff !
9.2 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is lovely House is so Japanese
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The attention to detail of the owner, who gave us lots of local information we could use for eating, travel, places to visit
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owner of the property made sure to sit down with every guest when they arrived and explained the area around the hostel. This level of service was truly fantastic. The living experience is also very traditional, yet without the normal price tag of similar traditional lodgings.
Cons: There was nothing I wasn't pleased with. This is a great property
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Friendly stuff, native japanese interior. Free drinks, 3 WC.
Cons: Thin walls, so you can hear all your neighbours. This house is traditional japanese house without central heating. So it is rather cold in winter.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Friendliest and most helpful check-in I've ever received!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Communication was excellent as my plans changed and I needed to make special requests. I had previously stayed at Asobigokoro in Dazaifu and the Kumamoto location was recommended to me. I had such a wonderful experience here, too. From the free coffee bar to the hand-designed map, I love this place and its amenities.

7.9 Good
Pros: Convenient location with shops and restaurants around the area.
Cons: Not accessible by car. Parking is 200m across the road.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great location and it is really near Kumamoto's Kototsu Center (where main Kyushu express bus drops you off). So if you are taking these buses, it is 3-5 minute walk to the hotel. Tons of shops and eateries nearby. It is near the famous Ichiran Ramen noodle shop. As the hotel is located in a Shotengai (Shopping Arcade), you can walk through tons of shops without getting wet. Rooms are slightly larger and toiletries are excellent. Front staff are very helpful and I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Kumamoto. It is really near a lot of sight seeing places and really accessible by tram (street car)
Cons: Price is slightly higher than most places but does not take away the value of the hotel
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It is very convenient.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Excellent hospitality. Helpful staff. Clean and quiet room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is very good, near for shopping, having food......
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very good location with a lot of F&B outlets and close to the tram stop and long distance bus stop. The staff was fantastic, especially the lady staff on duty on the 3 Jul morning who helped me to cancel my stay at Richmond Kagoshima due to bad weather and train disruption although I was not supposed to have checked into Richmond Kumamoto yet.
Cons: Twin bed was a little small for 2 adults, even though we are Asians and not big in size.
K2 Hotel Shimotori - Kumamoto - Building

8.4 Excellent (1,152 reviews)
C$ 38+
Overview Reviews
Located in Shimotori Shopping Arcade near the intersection of Shimo and Ginza streets, this hotel features spacious guest rooms emphasizing rest.
6.7 Good
Pros: The dressing room in the woman's dorminity is nice. Sitting in and blow hair with strong wind hair dryer, mirror, sink, soap and even moisturiser for facial is provided. (Anyway I had tried once using the small towel inside the dressing room for drying my hands after washed my hand, and It had bad smell on my hand after, and I found is the small towel smell. I not sure is the long chill lemongrass smell or bad insect smell, but I just don't like it) Location is great, just in the middle of two main shopping arcade in kumamoto. And surrounding walking distance with few attraction.
Cons: Found hair fall on my bed when first day check in. Seems the cleaning not so good. The lobby are too small space, and it's only few table with chairs. There is no tap for filling water, washing dish and maybe make some small drinks. But anyway can ask the staff to help for filling water and ask for small plate for taking out food at lobby.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was really nice. Situated literally in the middle of the shopping street. The staffs were friendly and I love the room!
Cons: None
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The front desk were very friendly and helpful. The capsules were well laid out and private. It was very clean and comfortable. It’s in a very busy area but there was very little noise in the room.
Cons: Someone set their cell phone alarm for 6:00 and then let it ring for almost 30 minutes. That’s not the hotel’s fault, they actually have it in their rule sheet not to do that, but it’s just the risk you take sleeping in a dorm that large.
6.7 Good
Pros: Good location.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff. Quiet guests. The best capsule experience we had in Japan!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything is good. The bed is spacious. Shower is great. Staff are amazing.

Pros: Typical capsules hostel. Everything is standard.
Cons: Hope there is a larger place to take a rest.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very kind, even allowed me to check in half an hour earlier than I’m supposed to. Great location. Right in the center of the shopping streets.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Perfect place to enjoy Kumamoto. The dormitory is well secured, the capsule in itself is big enough to put some personal stuff. 2 lockers: one for the shoes and one for small valuable items. It was clean, cosy and the staff was really helpful and kind
9.6 Excellent
Pros: facilities like bathroom and bedroom are clean. location is ver convenient.
Cons: rooms are narrow.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location. The park is within walking distance from hotel. Hotel has ample parking space for self drive and it's free of charge.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the room’s cozy design and the inclusion of an air purifier. Pity that there wasn’t anymore non-smoking rooms when I booked so I had to make do with a smoking one which I must say wasn’t too bad. They are a Michelin recommended hotel by the way.
Cons: Pillow was a bit too flat so maybe you can request for another if you wish. The cigarette smell along the corridor was bad! Maybe they should change it into a non-smoking hotel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s a very classy Japanese hotel, yet it only costs around $7000 yen per night.
Cons: It’s a bit far from tram station, the staff actually expect their guests to have a car as most of the guests would leave their car keys at the front desk.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Location easy access
Cons: The room is too small and expensive for family room even though location is not near city centre.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Vert nice Japanese style (tatami room). Large bathroom. Isakaya in the hotel, great for a late snack.
Cons: Could do with a larger bottle of water in the room, no reading light
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location near Suizenji Garden, fine breakfast, comfy bed and Japanese style room
Cons: On my check out day, every-time I contacted reception such as asked for my car’s key, asked direction to Suizenji, they always started with the issue of check out! It was a bit irritated that made me felt unwelcome and they were rushing me to check-out!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: a kind of new/modern hotel decor in the way of old traditional hotel, new and comfortable. wonderful Japanese bathing room
Cons: a bit out of downtown Kumamoto, but nearby the Suizenji (traditional Japanese garden), better come with car
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Close to one of the sightseeing point and just 5 mins walk from the tram

Pros: staff pleasant very good breakfast good location
Cons: the staff not fully conversant in english, therefore not of much help in getting aroung
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We love the furnishing of the hotel. It look really really new. They have staff that speaks English and their service was excellent too! The room is not big, but it smells good, quite clean and the bed is comfortable. Every bed has a back pillow which is really good when you want to sit on your bed to watch TV. Price for the stay is pretty alright.
Cons: No free bottle drinks, a little surprised for a hotel that look this posh. Tram stop is about 3 mins walk. There isn't much amenities like 24 hours family mart, so if you want some night snack... there is no where to go.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, great breakfast and the shuttle service to the station is super convenient! We would stay there again
7.0 Good
Pros: Rooms and good secure wi fi
Cons: Hotel restaurant very expensive and other restaurants were 20 minutes away by foot (very hot days). Location was not near anything, including 15 minute walk to the train or 660 yen taxi ride.
7.5 Good
Pros: Front desk staff were surprisingly professional for a hotel in the "middle of nowhere". Room was decently large, with decent pillows and a strong air conditioning.
Cons: Location is decent, but a bit of a walk from the main sites. Hotel is dated, and the lack of food options near the hotel is apparent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There are Russian staff speak very good English which help us a lot. Efficient assistance with very professional manner
Cons: The shower curtain has bad smell ... but it resolved in 10 mins when I raised my concern to front line staff
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The room is spacious and the bed is superb comfy, especially the pillows with beans. And all the staffs are friendly and helpful.
Cons: The neighbourhood has nothing, neither a convenience store. Although there is a souvenir shop on the group floor, the variety is very limited. It’s a bit far from the city centre, if shuttle service provided will be better.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nil

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Large room with extremely comfortable bed. Very friendly staff. Extremely clean room. Breakfast was excellent and parking right outside the hotel door. Perfect central location for exploring Kumamoto. We booked at short notice as the hotel we had booked was awful and then stayed an extra night due to a Typhoon coming in but theres was no trouble checking in or extending another night at all. Staff were brilliant.
Cons: Whats not to like?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It is a historical hotel and it maintains in quite good condition. Good location with walking distance to shop area. Breakfast waitress is very considerate; when she found we could not speak Japanese and hardly to explain in English, she immediately ask her colleague who could speak Chinese to assist. Air con in the room is very quiet and it does not disturb your sleep.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great stay with access to JR Kumamoto via tram and the airport via bus. Nice beds and room view of the castle. Breakfast was good as well. As a fan of older hotels I personally liked the style of the rooms. Staff was always friendly, however おもてなし towards foreigners could be improved as I felt that it was a bit more challenging for them and that the staff was nervous, although we simply greeted the staff once we entered (no need to panic). My biggest thank you goes to the elderly lady who was cleaning the smoking area outside of the hotel. ˙ᵕ˙ And I loved the magazine in the room with good information about Kumamoto !
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The property is in an excellent location, opposite the castle (which is currently under renovation). The room was extremely spacious and beautiful - with great views of the castle The staff were extremely helpful, especially the gentleman on the cloak room who helped us book an excursion to the Takachiho gorge.
Cons: Nothing - we would highly recommend.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location in downtown Kumamoto, short walk to the castle, nightlife and restaurants. It’s a big hotel so you expect a good standard of service and cleanliness and it has all that. Parking in the basement. Friendly and welcoming staff. Provided a cot for baby.
Cons: Rooms were very tight with 3 single beds and a baby cot but it’s what we booked and was fine for one night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean hotel and Super rich breakfast! Very nice and helpful staff who made us check-in early. Right in front of the Airport bus stop. Close to everything.

Pros: This hotel is in a great location, across the street from Tsuruya, the largest department store in Kumamoto. We had a rental car and the hotel has a very large underground garage. The concierge was very helpful getting us dinner reservations for Kumamoto's famous basashi and karashi renkon. Also, close to many fine Kumamoto ramen shops.

Cons: Rooms are quite small.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location. Not too far or too close to the crowd. You know what i mean. Offer free ramen from 2130-2300. The quality is good. Free beer(1 per guest) as well Free coffee and tea at the ground floor.
Cons: The lift could be smoky as some of the floors are non-smoke free. However, you do not smell any cigarette smoke on non-smoking floor. This is good
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Free shuttle to Kumamoto train station. Free unlimited supply of noodle 21:30-23:00 and welcome drink 19:00-21:00. Nice onsen at top floor. Warm reception.

Cons: A bit expensive in August
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Free shuttle to JR station, great outdoor/indoor onsen
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Outstanding value if you can get a room for under 8000 yen. Impeccable taste, design, supremely quiet, all modern amenities, great onsen bath area, even free ramen on the first floor.
Cons: Absolutely no complaints.
6.3 Good
Cons: Should have mentioned on all posters that the guests need to get the key of the washing machine. Or else the guests would have to move up and down between the room floor and the laundry floor, given that there are 13 floors altogether and the lifts are small, it’s not fun to do so.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location is great, near shopping center
Cons: Nothing, everthing was good

7.5 Good
Pros: situated near to the tram station and bed was comfortable
Cons: room was too cramp for us (2pax) to open up our luggage, else overall is fine
7.9 Good
Pros: The king size double bed room is a bit too small, don’t have enough space to open the suitcase. But the Kumamon room is much bigger and really cute. The buffet breakfast is yummy.
Cons: I am driving a Toyota Wish to the hotel and they say it’s too high for the hotel parking. So we have no choice to park opposite the road with pubic parking area which make the unloading of the luggage become not convenient.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Spacious room and clean

Cons: Check-in staff works slowly. Took us over 15mims.

7.5 Good
Pros: Staff were excellent. Breakfast was good value for money. We had a triple room which was quite spacious.
Cons: Room had a stale cigarette smell even though we booked a non smoking room and bathroom toilet ran at random times. Bathroom very small even by Japan standards.
6.7 Good
Cons: Small room with old facilities, esapecially the bathroom.
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff were very friendly. Bed was very comfy. The location was very good.
Cons: The worst pillow I have ever slept on although the bed was very comfy. And the breakfast and breakfast room were awful. It is a shame that this let down what otherwise is a nice hotel.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Clean, modern, at bargain price.
Cons: All signs are in Japanese, except for street level “APA”. I was looking for Hotel Kumamoto Koutsu Centre. In my tired state, I walked past it twice, went plodding in circles for an extra 50 minutes. Maybe emphasise “APA” in the ads for Japanese-language deficient baka tourists.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Room was significantly bigger than expected and almost double the size of most twin rooms we had on the trip. The location - while not directly next to a station - actually is a reasonable walk that shows you a brief look of the city as well.
Cons: It's APA - a comfortable and affordable stay but nothing out of the blue.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location . Excellent facilities . Definitely recommend
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Near shopping, good location
6.3 Good
Pros: Location.
Cons: The staff is rather not flexible with check in time. Even 15mins earlier is too much to ask for. That's not very nice being that most self driving tourist needs rest as soon as they reach the hotel. Not nice to keep them waiting at the lobby, don't you think so? And my word, I had to park my car at a public parking facility about 7mins away... And it was a rainy day.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We used a 3beds rooms. All beds were big and comfortable. The hotel was clean and there was also a Japanese style onsen available to use. Yutaka were also provided. Location was good not too far away from Kumamoto castle and the centre. Only 4 stops by tram from the train station. Very good value for money!
Cons: All great! There could have been more channels on the TV.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the back entrance location was right near the tram line. It was super easy to take the tram line from the station and then a short walk to the back entrance location. While the hotel was a bit old, they were still a great hotel. It was in a good location for where I was going and was easy to get to.
