Cons: nothing much except that the facility is a bit old, but everyting is still clean and organized
9.6 Excellent
Pros: traditional ryokan quietly located 5 mins from the main street, the staff was very welcoming and helpful
9.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked everything about the hotel. It was spotless, staff was great and the breakfast was delicious. They had a very nice onsen area, although the side with the outdoor bath was considerably nicer than the one without, so it is a good idea to make sure you try both. The hotel is right next to Sainokawara park which is especially spectacular after sundown.
6.0 Good

Cons: Expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great onsen, Good English-speaking Staff. Fine Room.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptionally huge room.Very good location, just right in front of “YUBATAKE”.And really a very picturesque view from our room!I highly recommend this “Superior Twin Room w/Tatami area w/View” room, the best experience ever. Will probably come back
Cons: It’s just that housekeeping attendants are not that polite.Greeting guests w/a big smile &a bow will make a big difference!!
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Onsen water quality
Cons: As we checked in late we were given 8.45pm as dinner time. But by 9.00pm food was gone without any warning. Windows don’t close fully. Wind was blowing through it whole night and it is end of December weather.
4.0 Okay
Pros: Location was good. We had nightly futon turn down service. It would be good to have a larger space so that the dining table did not need to be shifted to near the toilet, as we often were still having dinner when the turn down service arrived.
Cons: Toilet was terribly small, and had dust on the tops of the basin area. Needs a refresh, as everything looked outdated. Even the sliding window and netting. Not many facilities in the hotel.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Big room
Cons: The balcony bath tube is not a real onsen.
4.5 Okay
Pros: new roomfacility
Cons: A two class society hotel (main building "3 stars" / maybe tower building "5 stars") Room: 1) the bathroom got no new facility "make-up" 2) the room comfort was bad (no carpet, no bedside table, no clock) 3) hairdryer and cosmetics are outside from bathroom, sometimes no refill 4) only coffee mugs, no drinking glass Hotel: 1) no multi language hotel, informations are not written in english 2) Buffet was sufficient but not very tasty and every day the same one 3) Pool is only open at "holiday season" also closed when outside 30°C
9.0 Excellent
Pros: We had an amazing time at this hotel. They gave us a nice Japanese style room with a nice view of the mountains. The room was huge for Japan's standards. The Onsen is big and has these amazing medicinal vulcanic waters. Food was very good and plenty of it - although the same menu every day. It is well located - super close to the bus station, the city center and walking distance from the ski park.
Cons: This is a hotel that perhaps you can say is "too big". I also mentioned before that the dinner and breakfast menu was the same every day. But other than that I have no complaints. The price was super expensive - but still, that's your option to book and not the hotel's fault.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Very spacious, we ended up in a room big enough for possibly 8 people. (we had two toilets between the two of us) - Older bathroom style, however with the hotspring, we never used the bathroom. Toilets were clean. - Great little town to explore, short walk from the centre of the town. - Buffet dinner and breakfast were great, lots of choice. - Hotsprings were spacious and never overly crowded. - There was a drum performance every night. - We were very comfortable. - Great staff.

7.1 Good
Pros: The staff is very friendly and really tries to make you feel at home as much as possible and the public bath is very nice.
Cons: You can’t ignore the fact that the hotel is very old (not in a charming way), the atmosphere is quite sad (the dinner buffet is quite a letdown), and in general the hotel is definitely overpriced for what it is.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: In city centre and convenient to go every where, buffet dinner is very good
Cons: Hot spring is too hot to stay
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location wise it’s superb and it has a nice shopping plaza downstairs of hotel, fantastic !!
Cons: The included dinner was a disaster!!
6.3 Good

Cons: Onsen is small . Buffet breakfast and dinner are below expectation.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything else is perfect! THEY SPEAK ENGLISH! Location of hotel, very friendly staff, clean, nice onsen,....
Cons: Location of the room: if you're not in the main building, be ready to remember the way to your room. They explain it very good, but I had to take 3 different elevators and use access ways...

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole complex itself is really worth going to. We stayed at one of the cottages, which was amazing. I totally recommend this to families and big groups. It is close to Kusatsu’s main tourist spots, and there’s always someone willing to take you to the town center.
Cons: Everything was perfect.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Hot spring , the hot spring is so great!! I felt so relax when I took hot spring. And employee are very kind and sweet ! I thought I’ll visit there again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staffs were friendly and helpful, they provid free shuttle bus to Yubatake. We were very satisfied with the fresh sashimi the dinner buffet provided. Last, to have free onsen in winter time is a plus!
Cons: I had a very hard time finding the hotel's email to ask some questions before made up my mind to book.
7.5 Good
Pros: well staffs are nice
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It looks a bit dated but it is well maintained. Limited English spoken but staff will make an effort to make themselves understood. The food was excellent. Very big buffets for breakfast and dinner and there is a lot to choose from (mainly Japanese food). The room was not super big but reasonable size. I am sure there are bigger options for more but it was big compared to what you can get in Tokyo for the same price. Good size and comfortable beds (western style). 2 onsen to choose from. The main one with an outdoor pool/bath. Overall very nice stay.
Cons: It's a bit outside of town but there are frequent shuttles that will take you to the bus terminal, in the centre of town (4-5 minute rides only) or it is an easy 15-20 minutes on foot.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service & restaurant
Cons: Nothin
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Thank you very much to drive us to bus terminal with another car as the shuttle bus is insufficient seats for us. All staffs are very nice to answer my questions. The rooms with tatami area are spacious and the onsen are wonderful especially the outdoor one. The location is little far away from Yubatake but the hotel provides shuttle bus service to Yubatake which around 5 minutes.
Cons: Nil
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved everything - from great breakfast, to choice of onsens, walks and activities, shuttle to town, smiley faces of staff, beautiful surroundings, quiet restful nights. Can’t wait to come back.
Cons: A small uplift would be good
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good Onsen, Staffs is very kind, House also nice.
Cons: No wifi at House.

Pros: We were happy to stay here.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location and the private Onsen. We had a small problem with are room but the manager a woman who’s name I can’t remember went above and beyond to fix it. She cared for us like we were her own family. Things like that are far and few between in this world. I would like to thank her and her staff for the professionalism.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: good breakfast and dinner
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Helpful and efficient staff, nice place to stay.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location is good as it is about a 7-8 minutes walk to Yubatake, the main attraction in the centre of town. Staff are always polite and helpful providing good customer service. Breakfast and especially dinner is a must in the hotel. Dinner was the standard kaiseki set, abundance in variety with quality fresh food where without doubt, most of the guests look forward to each day. Love the in-house onsen as they are spacious with a few pools, not crowded and not too hot and always available.
Cons: There is only cold water from the tap in the room. Wi-Fi in the room need to be upgraded as it is always disconnected.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole experience was truly memorable... The Hotel, People who work there, Food (esp the Japanese Dinner!) the location and the Private Onsen! We traveled from Tokyo going to Kusatsu and this took us 5 changes of Trains, Shinkansen, Bus and Hotel Shuttle to get here but let me tell you, it was worth it! The food was delicious! My personal favourite was the dinner. If you are thinking if getting dinner was worth the hype, it is. Everything was laid out so meticiously and tastes so authentic! Everyone was helpful, but there's this one lady (I forgot to ask for her name) at the Reception area, she's lovely. She's so pleasant and so happy to have us over. We are the only non locals who were Guests (I think). We booked the Private Onsen and it was so good! I understand why Japanese loves this. I can do this everyday. The Hotel is just a few meters away from the Yubatake. I will definitely come back here and be brave enough to do the Public Onsen on my next trip!
Cons: Very minimal things.... Since our room is a living room (We booked for the Traditional Japanese Room) in the morning and some fairy angel converts it to a bed at night, if you need to rest during the afternoon, be prepared to sleep on the chairs or set up the bed for yourself. The set up is not so bad, but with my horrible migraine (wind so cold, yet the sun is shining so brightly), I need to make an effort to make bed. There's an additional charge for Ice :(
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is near the onsen town, & the hotel onsen is very good.
Cons: Nil.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Traditional style room was a great experience and they give you robes to wear around town. They set your bed up while you are at dinner. Staff were friendly and helpful. Massage chairs outside the Onsen on the 4th floor was a great way to relax even further! Japanese dinner was fantastic! Breakfast buffet also had heaps of options from scrambled eggs to sashimi. Short walk to all major onsens in town
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The in-house onsen made our decision. The location is a short walking distance from the Kusatsu Bus Terminal. No worries if you have luggages as the hotel does provide free shuttle bus services to/from the bus station. Attentive, friendly and diligent English speaking staffs. Both the breakfast buffet spread & dinner (pre-booked) are excellent & satisfactory.
Cons: Nothing.

8.6 Excellent (500 reviews)

Overview Reviews
Kusatsu KOTODAMA is a Japanese-style guest house that is located just a 4-minute walk away from Kustatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. The property is also a 10-minute walk from Yubatake hot springs field. Free WiFi is provided throughout the property. Shampoo and hairdryers are available at the shared shower room. Several hot springs baths are located within a walking distance from the property. The on-site kitchenette has a microwave, electric kettle, kitchenware and some cookware that guests are free to use. There is a supermarket within a minute's walking distance from the property. Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort is 1.2 km away.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It is clean and bed are confortable for a cheap price
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice Guest House, a little bit from the center but it's a small town so that doesn't mean much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed at the 2nd floor’s private room and it was really cozy, comfortable and with enough space for futons and luggage. The room also had a sofa and lockers. Even though it is a ryōkan, everything was really well maintained and seemed to be recently reformed. There is a supermarket right in front, very convenient. It takes around 15 minutes walking to Yubatake, but you can stop at a foot fountain in the way to relax, right next the bus station.
Cons: For those who have problems with brightness, there aren’t curtains in the room.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location, comfort of beds.
Cons: Unfortunately one bathroom only and not control of time spent by other guests who abused of it. Noise isolation is very poor, could hear downstairs room talking who was not respecting after 11pm silence.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location! Nice place! ROOM: The room I stayed in Standard Double Room that was near the entrance. It was a very spacious room. It was definitely big enough for three or maybe even four people. The room has a very Japanese vibe with the tatami mats and minimalist decor. There is a small sound table, some cushions. There is also a cabinet with key where you can keep your valuables. The room has a heater as well. Please note it's a kerosene heater so there is a bit of a smell of kerosene. The room has about three power sockets so you can charge your phone and other gadgets while you sleep. MATTRESS: Since it's a traditional Japanese room, guests sleep on a futon. It was very comfortable for me. FACILITIES: The house is what one would expect of a Japanese house: neat and tidy. Very organized. There is a kitchen that house guests can use. The bathroom is a very standard Japanese bathroom: shower and tub. It's spacious than most There were enough shower rooms. They also provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste. I was also able to borrow a bath towel, an onsen towel, and a yukata. There are several home slippers for use. STAFF: The staff I met was friendly. She explained things really well. Check-in and check-out were a breeze. LOCATION: It's about 5 minutes away from the bus terminal. There is a big supermarket nearby. There are also some food places: tonkatsu shop, bagel shop, and a bar nearby. PRICE: For the price I paid it was really good value for money.
Cons: KINDLY NOTE: As stated in the website, the room is near the entrance so there may be some noise from the opening/closing of doors. Also, the room door is a sliding type door so it also creates some noise. Finally, when I stayed at the place, another guest was talking loudly on the phone at 3AM and I imagine the whole house heard the person's really loud voice. If you're a light sleeper, please take note. Aside from that one guest, my stay at Kotodama was really great.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I like Everything
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Rooms were clean and view from room was good
Cons: Breakfast was not that great
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very good view over look the skiing field. We were there on 2nd March and had a first class view of the fireworks. Love it
Cons: There's no non-smoking room. So the room will have cigarettes smell
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice onsen with a view included!
Cons: Dinner was mediocre, rather eat in the city center. Breakfast was ok.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: nothing
Cons: poor facilities and cleanliness doesnt deserve the cost and stay
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I didn’t expect both dinner and lunch to be included in the price, so that was a great surprise! The quality and spread of the food were great as well. Great view from outside my bedroom window.
Cons: Distance was a little far from the bus terminal (expect uphill and downhill slopes) but for the price, it is acceptable.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: the room was spacious and has a nice view from the veranda. I also like the breakfast buffet. The rate was affordable .
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We stayed here for one night on 3 Jan but booked early enough to enjoy a very good rate. It’s half board and thus included breakfast and dinner in buffet. Variety of food was plenty and quality average. Unlike some reviews, there were hot food as well as hotpot during dinner and staff quickly refilled popular items. It’s good value in light of the reasonable rate. Room was of good size. It was old and tired but as a practical hotel it was all that I have expected.
Cons: Timing for meal was quite limited with one hour for dinner and 50 minutes for breakfast. Exact time for meal may change and you better check it out if you plan to arrive after 17:30. The onsen both indoor and outdoor were giant but a bit too hot.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Loved the view and quietness
Cons: The food was ok
7.9 Good
Pros: Fair price, spacious and comfortable room, good public bath
Cons: Dinner/breakfast buffet offered plenty of food but the quality was so-so. Can’t complain for the rate I got, though.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: You should definitely book a plan with both breakfast and dinner since the food in Kanemidori was extremely good and the restaurant they are served in is very atmospheric. The staff was very welcoming and hospitable, and there were no problems even without a common language. The hotel interior was very beautiful, the rooms were spacious and the whole place spotless. The onsen of the hotel was very good. You can choose your own yukata for the stay from a small selection of different patterns and colors. Since Kusatsu is a small town everything is within walking distance but the hotel offers a free shuttle bus service to the bus terminal regardless.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great and the facilities are just perfect, magical and lovely. The staff is really charming too and the breakfast was excellent. It was a really good experience and we enjoyed a lot. I recommend this ryokan to everyone, my favourite so far. Thank you!!
Cons: Everything was just perfect!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Hotel staff are very friendly and coped well with my lack of Japanese. The japanese breakfast is as good as everyone else has commented. I didnt have dinner but Im sure it is just as excellent. The onsen is key. I've read that they accept foreign tattoos which is a plus. The outdoor bath is superb but the private bath is better for ¥3000 if you can stretch your budget. Theirs a choice of stone or wood bath and we used both. I loved the smooth feel of stone and hot spring water. Try it. The massive plus for this hotel on top of everything else is where its situated just 3 minute walk from the spring field and within walking distance of the bus station but absolutely quiet and peaceful. Best of all worlds. I highly recommend it.
Cons: Nothing to not like about this hotel. It's a typical Ryokan , the deluxe room we stayed at was compact and there was no beautiful window view but the ambience was authentic and the room clean and tidy.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast, Onsen, location very close to Yubatake, Very friendly staff, Spacious room, Really nice Yukata
Cons: Not many staff speaks English, but we can get by. It was hard to find the place at the beginning
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Heptful and very good stuff
Cons: None

7.1 Good
Pros: The staff is very friendly and really tries to make you feel at home as much as possible and the public bath is very nice.

Pros: Location in the middle of town, very nice. Very great staff, clean and beautiful facilities. The bathes are small, but nice. There is a private bath for family.
Cons: Breakfast and dinner was okay. But with so many places to eat just outside, it wouldn't hurt to pass on the meals here.
