Cons: The outdoor onsens could've been a little more "outdoor"
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stairs etc as expected. But the meals were unexpectedly good and very good value for money.
Cons: Just too bad we checked in too late and got no time to visit other onsens.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Onsen is great and staff is very friendly. The tea scent in room make us feel a warm welcome. Staff did drive us from and to the bus station.
10.0 Excellent

The location is really close to the center, yet tranquil. Staff speaks good english and are very welcoming and warm kind of person. I love their amount of food, very optimum in amount and delicious.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was really good. The dinner was one of the better kaiseki dinner's we've eaten. The baths were nice (but very hot!) and the property was very cute.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location, beautiful setting, and amazing onsens! Great traditional Ryoken experience!
Cons: The meals did not change from day to day, if you are staying more than one night you will end up eating the same meals for dinner and breakfast.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The bed is comfortable and clean.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Only 11 guest rooms with 2 indor and 2 outdoor shared onsen and 3 family onsen. Fantastic Kaiseki full course dinner and Japanese breakfast. Quite good location to enjoy small Kurokawa onsen town. Attentive staffs are keen to provide best services.
Cons: A family with kids are not welcome. They charge 2160 yen for a kid even though the family share a room and a meal.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service, beautiful traditional Japanese garden, great meal menus, and super clean and spacious tatami room
Cons: Yukata was very pretty but not for sale. Payment is cash only (unreasonable to expect people to carry around such large amount of cash)
7.1 Good
Pros: very pleasant people.. lots of charm.. not so easy to get to... they made a birthday cake for my husband as I had requested
Cons: expensive overall; not option for different breakfast... a little out if the way but this was also partof the charm
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything. I was 3 months pregnant during my visit, so I requested to have meals without the raw ingredients. I didn't expect them to comply due to the difficult request, and I didn't double check with them when I checked in, but they followed through with my request and the meals we had there were amazing! The bath was great. I loved how the baths are all scattered in a moss garden, so we could take a walk to the onsens while enjoying the garden and the ryokan complex is very lovely. The room is very spacious and their service and explanation is very thorough. We really enjoyed our stay!
Cons: Nothing!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Extremely professional staff. Outstanding kaiseki meal. Beautiful grounds. Exclusive location.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was my best onsen and ryokan experience in Japan! We were met at the bus stop and treated like royalty. A special thanks to Mr. Iwano for taking such good care of us. The resort had two outdoor onsens to use and it was spectacular to sit looking out on the river and the woods while soaking in the mineral bath. The silence and mountains were special after city visits. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious and our desire for coffee before starting breakfast was met with a smile and fantastic service. We checked out and enjoyed the village the next day and they met us at the bus stop to catch our bus to Beppu.
Cons: That we didn’t stay two nights!!
7.5 Good
Pros: The riverside private onsen in our room was fantastic. It's a beautiful grounds, the type c room is quite pretty. Staff were nice and gave us a tour that we liked.
Cons: The indoor onsen was dirty. No yukatas provided, they provide a shirt and pants and shoes that are made for tiny people, so anyone over 5'8 will be too big to wear them. It's not a typical ryokan experience in my opinion. The two separate single beds is weird.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kurokawa is one of Japan’s prettiest hot spring resort towns, and Miyama Sansou is probably one of the best places to stay: it is a bit out of the village in a beautiful setting with the villas situated along a river. Lots of trees were om blossom. The villa is huge, we liked the western bedding, and the private onsen was wonderful. It is quiet and peaceful, and we understood later that many hot spring places can we overcrowded with tourists. We used the very nice outdoor onsen at the Yamamizuki (next door), with a spectacular view of the river and surrounding woods. The Kaiseki diner in the evening was excellent, and liked the special sake deal (3 sake wines out of the list to try for only 1,000 Yen). There is lots to see and do in this beautiful region on Kyushu, Aso mountain is only 50 minutes away. highly recommended!
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Brilliant place to rest for a couple of days! Everything was perfect, from the staff’s politeness and helpfulness to the magnificent rooms and onsen :)

Pros: Location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s one of the kind, best services, foods great.
Cons: Hard to booked.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is so beautifully arranged and furnished. The amenity and toiletries are also convenient. We live close to the resort's bath house. Both the indoor and outdoor onsen are amazing.
Cons: The food is a bit on the average side. Dead insect bodies on the wall.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast, dinner and staff service was excellent. They provided us with free drinks, free towels (to keep) and clothing amenities in the rooms. It snowed while we there there and they provided coats for us to wear to dinner. We booked a room which had a private onsen and had access to three other onsens, including yamamizuki (wth a gorgeous view of the river). It was located at the edge of the township so driving here is recommended.
Cons: I’m not sure if they had free WIFI at the restaurant. Free wifi was good but limited mainly to the rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very helpfull Ms Hashimoto arrange transportation for us

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice Ryokan with outdoor Onsen and you can use it with tattoos. The Dinner and breakfast was good. We had a very nice waiter with good English acknowledgment. Very good service.
Cons: The price of 320 Euro/ Night :-)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast, the room, the hot bath, everything! The staff were particularly friendly and helpful.
Cons: Nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff were great, it was a wonderful experience of Japanese Ryokan culture. We loved the outdoor baths and the dinners were very good.
Cons: It was very tired and somewhat run down. The sleeping arrangements of futon on the floor is not to our liking (or our backs!). Unfortunately there was a pipe that made intermittent loud noises throughout the night waking us up, really detracting from the serenity of the stream running next to us. We went during a peak time, but even still for the cost we would have expected a little more.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The situation is nearby the bus station, about 5-8 mins walk. You can walk yourself or be picked up by the staff. Their dinner are excellent and fresh. Roasted beef or raw horse meat could be chosen. The quality of hot spring is amazing good, which makes the skin better immediately. I cannot point anything bad about this accommodation!
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the perfect place to experience a typical japanes Ryokan! The staff was doing everything and surpassed themselves. There are plenty of Ryokans in the little town to chose from. We were very happy with out choice, cause it's compared to some of the other options a rather small one. There are pretty big ones too, with busses and tourgroups staying there. Not this one. We had a very lovely room. We went for the mix out of a tatami area and regular beds. If you wanna sleep on the typical futons, they have those rooms too. Big onsen area! I would like to single out the dinner though! The dinner was just awesome! Regarding quality of the food, variety and presentation. You could literally stay there just for the dinner alone.
Cons: In general Ryokans in Japan are seriously expensive. This one is no exception.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: great Ryokan experience, excellent room with private onsen where you could listen to the sound of the river close by, cute little town, the outdoor onsen was the best! dinner was nice, breakfest aswell...staff was helpfull and really friendly
Cons: actually i expected to get food in our private space (not really bad though, it could just be mentioned in the description)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect!
Cons: Only two private onsen but it's not a big problem because you can make a reservation ones you check in.

Yamamizuki - Minamioguni - Restaurant

9.1 Excellent (817 reviews)
C$ 454+
Overview Reviews
The Yamamizuki is an ideal choice for travelers who want to take in the sights and sounds of Minamioguni. In their spare time, guests can explore the hotel's surroundings. A pickup service can be arranged for guests upon request. Our guests consider this hotel to have excellent service. This is one of the most popular hotels in Minamioguni, you can be assured of a great stay.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, superb meal, graceful decorating style, cozy room. Everything is wonderful. The only one thing we can complain a little is you can see the small bugs easily somewhere
Cons: A little far from the main street (30mins walk) but there's a shuttle bus works every day.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The onsen are very pretty and relaxing, especially after dark. It would have been nice to share an onsen with my wife if we had hired out the private unit, but apparently that was against the rules (even if you'd paid for sole use of the onsen)
Cons: Yamamizuki is very poor at meeting customer needs, if the customer wants anything that even slightly alters their way of doing things. So I was told "No" in response to every request I made, all of which were quite reasonable: Could we have a simple Western breakfast? - "No". I requested this on my booking form but they didn't answer before we arrived. They eventually on Day 3 started serving a piece of fruit and one piece of bread per person (this was a $1000 per night booking....), which was inferior to what was available at the local convenience store. We might be back late, can we dine at 8.30? - "No" The teenage children are slow to get up, can we have breakfast at 9? - "No" Today we will definitely not be back before you stop serving dinner, so can we miss it? (Request made at 8.30 am) - "No" (or rather, we will charge you for dinner for 5 anyway) Can we have standard breakfast tea not green tea? "No" (not a hard request....) By the end my whole family felt uncomfortable about asking for anything and in constant danger of breaking unwritten 'rules'. The desire by staff to do anything to meet guests' wishes is completely lacking: - I have a bad foot and walk with a limp. The nearest town is 2km+ away. I walked down there 3 times during my stay. Not once did any of the reception staff offer to use the Yamamizuki car to give me a lift. Other Asian hotels would be ashamed to let a guest walk off as Yamamizuki did. It may also be of interest to know that a Yamamizuki stay is designed to isolate you from other people. All meals are served in private rooms and there are no public areas whatsoever - reception rooms, gardens etc. For some people, this may be a positive but for anyone wanting to ask other guests about onsen or the surrounding area, you will learn nothing at Yamamizuki.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Truly amazing experience. Incredible hot springs and unforgettable meals.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was more than I had envisioned. The staff were beyond attentive, friendly, and extremely helpful. The facilities were amazing, including the onsen. We were stuffed every meal here as the food selection was so fresh and delicious!!! We will come back. Thank you again!
Cons: Absolutely nothing!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The rotenburo was amazing, positioned along side the river. I do not think it gets better than this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: From the attentive care of its staff shown in emails inquiring about our arrival and their making bus reservations for us to the views of flowing creeks and cascade waterfalls by the indoor and outdoor baths, Yamamizuki has exceeded our expectation and we are very happy to have stayed there.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast - We are foreigners and all were new to us. It was interesting and all the items served was delicious. The staff were all very positive, helpful, friendly at all times. I was down with a bad cough and upon my request, they gave me some local medication that helped tremendously. Dinner - the first night was a wow experience but the second night with fish as the main theme not so much. All the same, it was sumptuous and good. The onsen experience was new to my wife and I. We tried all the family baths as well as the communal ones. I dare say we liked it so much that we shall be trying out more.
Cons: Nothing really. Occupancy was full on both nights that we stayed but this did not hinder our movements or space at the onsens made available.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff are nice and very helpful. They got three type of hot spring bath: public bath for hotel guests, bath for hotel guests and walk-ins and private bath available for reservations. Public bath for hotel guests is clean and big with nice garden view.

Pros: The Ryokan was perfect with the room, Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. They provided free shuttle to and from bus stop and center of the town. I could actually walked from the town center back to Ryokan which took me about 15 minutes. The Onsen experiences were great with indoor and outdoor options. Staffs were so polite and very nice.
Cons: A little bit out of town.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Feel so overwhelmed when the staff is waiting and welcoming us in the parking bay once our car is arrived in the entrance. Like the quiet ryokan with no much noises. Enjoy my onsens with nice sceneries. The dinner and breakfast are good and filling. Love the yukata and sandal colours. The room is spacious enough and very comfortable. You can listen the water flowing outside the window and it’s double the joy for my trip .
Cons: It’s perfect if have more choices of different onsens. overall it’s wonderful stay

Cons: Quite pricey! We could’ve had a much more modest room for the 4 of us
7.1 Good
Pros: Good location and a variety of dish for breakfast
Cons: Facilities are old and dated, carpets not very clean. Check out is too early (10am), onsen is not so impressive for the price paid
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good view in the village and resort, Respect staffs, Excellent room and breakfast, Good hotspring inside the resort.
Cons: Some member of my family didn't accept with public bath. Because they feel shy to be naked. If the resort have second choice for those people such as just a normal bathroom. These people may feel better.

Pros: A very calm, comfortable place. We had a small terrace with a view on the pond. There were some cute frogs too. We could use the private onsen with reservation, pretty nice, just beware of the spiders on the way haha.
Cons: Overall I expected a little bit more, because it's a 4*, and I was not as amazed as by other 4* I did in my life (like in Morocco) but I'm probably picky.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing ryokan onsen experience, contender for best ryokan I've ever been to. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic, and the open air onsen was very nice. Great wifi for remote resort town. Very centrally located in Kurokawa near the best shops. They were very helpful handling car parking and provided valet for the car, it was ready and waiting for us at checkout. I was travelling with Japanese speakers which made everything easier, if you only speak English you might find communication more challenging but it will be worth it.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property right in the middle of Kurokawa Onsen. The river right outside the room was very pleasant, providing a nice view and ambient sound. Delicious traditional-style breakfast and dinner. A daily private reservation for the outdoor bath was provided which was fantastic, and we also enjoyed a dip in the mixed cave bath which was very cool. Staff was very helpful and kind, although their english was not perfect they always tried their best to make us happy.
Cons: The property is a bit labyrinthian, so better english guidance would have been helpful.

Pros: Great dinner course and breakfast. Wonderful scene from outdoor bath.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The property is located on an absolutely beautiful mountain stream, as scenic as any postcard. Breakfast and dinner are both included, and are both fabulous. The perfect ryokan experience.
Cons: It's remote, so it's a little hard to find. Google Maps will get you close, but at the last minute it will send you to the wrong side of the stream.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Remote location in the woods next to a cascading river feels very secluded and in nature. Clean tatami cabin rooms with private onsen-fed cypress baths are peaceful and unique. Friendly and welcoming staff were very helpful. Amazing Kaiseki dinner never seemed to end and delicious breakfast. Wonderful (but not large) rotemburo bath outside next to the river - you may have it to yourself. And bizarrely, this was the only place we found orange Fanta in 2.5 weeks travelling around japan.
Cons: For an inn of this overall quality and price range they should really have more comfortable futons The traditional buckwheat ones were pretty hard and uncomfortable. We marked it down a lot for this deeming it a fundamental thing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Food, good service staff, cleaning room, Everything. Coming back next time.
Cons: Nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: This hotel very clean and comfort. Like the onsen much

Cons: nothing in particular
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were really helpful and friendly especially satou san who has helped us out with a lot of things I.e arranging transport to and fro the onsen town. Other staff generally would try their best to help when you ask even if their English isn't perfect. I would recommend this place but I think it would be best to drive there as it is a little further out. The dinner provided was fantastic! The bath onsen is fantastic!
Cons: As it was during the transition to summer there were some bugs that gathered at the door but not a big problem as they are pretty harmless.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. The food was amazing, the hosts were amazing, the rooms were ascetic but enjoyable. One of the most relaxing stays at a hotel I've ever had.
Cons: It's a bit secluded, so either car or a relaxed attitude is necessary

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Our hosts were gracious and helpful, and ever aware of what they could do to make out stay even more pleasany. The food was AMAZING: overstuffed myself throughout our two-day stay, and everything was presented beautifully as well. Kudos to the chef!! Very nice to have our personal hot spring tub. Interiors of the property were well designed. Our room was huge, and also had a balcony (which unfortunately looked out at a back hoe fixing up the river). The extra heaters in the room came in handy with cold nights (and for drying our shoes which got tremendously muddy after a spring hike in the local mountains).
Cons: The hot springs (both in our room and the public/outdoors one) could have been hotter at times, particularly when the cool winds was blowing outside. Nice to have our own hot spring tub, so even when it was cooler than it should have been, we could just hop out, wait for a few minutes while the cold water cycled off, and then hop back in. It was very very difficult getting to the ryokan for the first time--even the English GPS had problems with the address. That view off our balcony was particularly unfortunate.
4.6 Okay
Cons: Only reason i picked this place is large space(60sq ft) as described. Its not even 30 imo
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Dinner exceptional. Hosts very nice and accommodating. Transfers organised to all the locations we wanted. Room spacious and comfortable.
Cons: Slow Internet connection in the room.
7.9 Good
Pros: The hot spring bath was lovely
Cons: Unfortunately building work was being completed on the other side of our balcony. The lighting in the room wasn't great so the room was quite dimly lit.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We loved everything about this Ryokan. It is a full-on experience that you will never forget. The service and the food were perfect !

Pros: One of the best onsen hotels I have ever stayed in.

Pros: The room/cottage that we booked came with a private indoor and a private outdoor onsen which were superb. The public onsen is located adjacent to a waterfall. It was a pity that we went there by night time and couldn't enjoy the scenery except hearing the pouring sound.
Cons: It would be perfect if the toilet inside our room/cottage could be equipped with heater as we had to wear a coat whenever we wish to attend to nature's call. XD
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This property is back a bit from the tourist area of minamioguni, which gives it a very private feel. It's very quiet and serene. There was snow in early December when we visited! There's nothing like sitting outside in the snow in a natural hot spring :) The staff were all very friendly, one young woman spoke fluent English (very helpful since my husband and I know very few Japanese words). When we arrived they had hot tea and a small treat waiting for us (fresh mochi with dried honey I think). Our room was clean and the heaters worked great! (I'm a wuss when it comes to the cold.) Our room had both an indoor and outdoor tub. The indoor tub area also had a shower. In addition to the tubs in our room there were two private bathing areas we could visit (with tattoos) that were right along the river. We didn't have any issues having to wait for either area. Meals were served in a dinning area with private rooms for each table. The staff did great at preparing meals for my husband who does not eat any seafood. We wrote a note about this in our reservation and they made sure to bring him all non-seafood dishes. The food was very good and beautifully presented. It was fun trying things I would have never ordered, like jellyfish! But there was plenty of "normal" things too, so I didn't go hungry. Both dinner and breakfast were very filling. When it was time for us to leave they sent us on our way with two delicious buttery croissants for the road! Even though it was much more than we would normally spend for a hotel, it was worth the price for the experience. Everyone visiting Japan should spend at least one night at a ryokan like this one!
Cons: Since both my husband and I have tattoos so we were unable to visit the waterfall roten-buro :(
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this place was an amazing experience. The facilities are great − both the shared ones and private ones. We stayed there two nights. Perfect place to relax! The room was great − not only for the aforementioned private onsen: we loved the kotatsu! The food was absolutely amazing as well. It’s not a cheap place to stay, but for us it was totally worth it.
Cons: Not a minus in itself, but the whole area is hard to reach by public transport. We could not make it to the daily Kurokawa bus in time, so had to rely on a string of trains, buses and taxi − stressful, but everything worked out though! And the onsen itself is a fair walk to Kurokawa town. We wanted to drop by there for post-office, and it was a solid 20m walk − a nice one, but not with sidewalks all the way − quite stressful with cars coming up :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Had no problem communicating with staffs, which rarely applies to other ryokans
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My husband and I stayed at this ryokan for a few days. It was our first time traveling to Minamioguni and we did not know what to expect. Oyado Kafugetsu exceeds our expectations in many ways. Our room was a lot bigger and newer than expected. We even had a private indoor and outdoor bath which were free to use at any time. My husband and I are big fan of traditional Japanese home and this ryokan is just perfect! There were a female and a male (separated) baths with breathtaking view to a waterfall, and also a couple of other shared baths near the waterfall. The whole experience is just amazing! Breakfast and dinner were inclusive in the hotel fee. The food there was definitely the best we have had during our entire trip in Japan this year. The staff were all very courteous, professional and friendly. Despite our limited knowledge and proficiency in Japanese language, we were able to communicate and had fun conversations with them. It was definitely the place to be if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life to uninterrupted tranquility. We felt really spoilt during our entire stay there and will definitely stay at Oyado Kafugetsu again. We highly recommend it to anyone traveling in Minamioguni/Kumamoto.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Knowing that we are visitors from Hong Kong, the hotel arrange a Taiwanese staff who is proficient in Taiwan language and English to serve us. It is very thoughtful arrangement. The room is spacious with private onsen. You can enjoy the waterfall view in one of the public onsen. The hotel is so nicely decorated with traditional Japanese garden style that it becomes one of our "site seeing spots".
3.8 Mediocre
Cons: It must be good hotel if in a good condition.Very old and not clean at all around area,it look like spooky hotel. The food not like that show in booking.com

Pros: Fantastic location, wonderful hotel with very friendly and helpful staff! The room was spacious, the onsen just outstanding. Great breakfast, delicious and fabulous dinner. Highly recommended!

Pros: The rotenburo was amazing, positioned along side the river. I do not think it gets better than this.

Pros: From the attentive care of its staff shown in emails inquiring about our arrival and their making bus reservations for us to the views of flowing creeks and cascade waterfalls by the indoor and outdoor baths, Yamamizuki has exceeded our expectation and we are very happy to have stayed there.

Pros: Excellent service, beautiful traditional Japanese garden, great meal menus, and super clean and spacious tatami room
Cons: Yukata was very pretty but not for sale. Payment is cash only (unreasonable to expect people to carry around such large amount of cash)
