Small in size, but powerful in character, Sheffield is often overlooked in favour of neighbouring Manchester and Leeds. But this green city offers something the others can’t: With one-third of the city located inside the Peak District National Park, there are more trees per person than in any other European city. Originally arriving as a university student, I’ve spent the last 10 years living in and around Sheffield. From Broomhill and Crookes to Kelham Island and Ecclesfield, when I’m not travelling the world, my roots are firmly planted in Sheffield. I can’t have a pie without Henderson’s Relish and I’ll put gravy on just about everything. I’m very much an adopted Yorkshireman. Want to see what all the fuss is about? Come visit the city’s boutique inns, charming pubs and former military guardhouses. Here are my recommendations for the best hotels in Sheffield.

1.

Brocco On The Park Boutique Hotel

Address:

92 Brocco Bank

Price:

C$ 235-C$ 321/night

My favourite of the boutique hotels in Sheffield, Brocco On The Park offers luxury rooms in one of the city's finest locations. Situated at the meeting point of Ecclesall and Sharrow Vale Road, it’s one of the best hotels in Sheffield for foodie travellers.

Chef Tom Wells Lomas and his team have earned a reputation in these parts for creating a unique dining experience that’s worth travelling for. Come to try the hotel’s award-winning brunch, indulgent afternoon tea and phenomenal evening menu.

Alternatively, spend your morning visiting nearby Made by Jonty for one of Sheffield’s best breakfasts and Corner Store for delicious baked goods. Finish off with a walk around Endcliffe Park, stopping to see the famous "Mi Amigo" Memorial.

2.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Sheffield

Address:

30 Pinstone Street 30

Price:

C$ 129-C$ 425/night

One of the best hotels in Sheffield, as well as the newest, the Radisson Blu takes centre stage in the Heart of the City regeneration project. This multi-million-pound development is making use of almost 140,000 sqm to transform the historic city centre.

Stay in one of the 154 contemporary guestrooms, with standard, superior, triples, junior suites and family rooms all available. Head to the rooftop and sip on a signature cocktail at Governor Gupta, the in-house restaurant and bar. There you can taste the distinct flavours of Tandoor cooking and look out over the Peace Gardens—Sheffield’s spiritual centre—through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Head out (and down) to Public, just a two-minute walk away, for quality cocktails in a former underground public convenience.

Other local hotspots include Marmadukes for coffee and Cambridge Street Collective, Europe’s biggest purpose-built food hall.

3.

Halifax Hall

Address:

Endcliffe Vale Road

Price:

C$ 96-C$ 269/night

Halifax Hall is located just outside Endcliffe Student Village, the main accommodation for Sheffield University first-year students. But this boutique hotel offers so much more than your average student digs.

Here you’ll find 38 luxurious rooms, a team of talented chefs and wonderful staff dedicated to making each visit special. Be sure to stop by the on-site restaurant for a taste of some of the finest food in the area.

Alongside typical stays, the hotel caters to private functions, weddings and other celebrations. It’s also a short walk from the fabulous Botanical Gardens, with 18 different areas of planting and several listed buildings to explore. This is hands down one of the best hotels in Sheffield and—despite its proximity to student "halls"—offers a delightfully tranquil experience.

4.

Leopold Hotel

Address:

2 Leopold Street, Leopold Square

Price:

C$ 93-C$ 359/night

Originally a 19th-century grammar school, Leopold Hotel seamlessly blends modern design with rich history. The hotel boasts 89 uniquely furnished rooms, all restored with a keen eye for detail, making this one of the top luxury hotels in Sheffield.

The hotel has a fitness suite, a lounge bar and a terrace, all of which are free for guests to use. Check out the bar (or order room service) to sample dishes from the carefully curated menu—their pizzas are my favourite. After a busy day exploring the city, there’s nothing better than relaxing in one of the double, king or twin rooms. In Leopold Square, you’ll find no shortage of upmarket bars and eateries, located just a stone's throw from your room.

Check out Cubana Tapas Bar or The Botanist for cocktails. Alternatively, The Sheffield Plate is a wonderful food court.

5.

The Florentine

Address:

1 Tapton Park Road

Price:

C$ 96-C$ 303/night
