When driving in Armenia you will find that the majority of the roads, whether steep or flat, are tarred and in fairly decent condition. You will on occasion have challenges like most countries, especially when you venture off the beaten track into more remote or rural areas. It is not uncommon to see herd of farm animals causing traffic jams. Snow during November and March is common, particularly in mountainous regions. With congestion not too much of an issue even in the urban areas, driving in Armenia should be a breeze.
While Armenians are free to drive from 18 years old, as a tourist renting a car you will need to be at least 21. Despite this, there may still be a young driver’s charge until you are 25. You may also be limited to what cars you can rent until you are 25. This usually applies to premium and luxury vehicles. If you are 75 or older, ensure your car rental agency do not have an upper limit on rental age. Sometimes they cap rental at 75 years old.
Gas prices in Armenia are measured in liters as opposed to gallons like in the US. They average 510 AMD (1.30 USD) per liter. The prices are not too much higher than the States and shouldn't make too much of a dent in your travel budget.
You will find that the speed limits in Armenia will be different, depending on what part of the country you visit. Limits are measured in kilometers and generally start as low as 20 km/h (12 mph) in residential areas. The city speed limit is pushed to 60 km/h (37 mph) and when you venture beyond the main urban areas they go up to 90 km/h (56 mph). On highways, you can drive up to 110 km/h (68 mph).
