Mexico City car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Mexico City

Although pricey, I would recommend to purchase additional insurance- driving through Mexico City potholes, is very easy to damage a car. Also, rocks on the road nearly cracked our windshield. These things are unavoidable.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Make sure that you ask if car will have local plates and that insurance is covered.

Take a Uber, cheaper, faster ( traffic is horrible everywhere in the city everyday) you would regret having a rental. No where to park ect.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Mexico City

  • Mexico City has a lot to offer -- and what better way to explore it all than with a rental car? Discover the beauty of nature many of the surrounding nature parks have on display, or venture out into adjoining areas without worrying about train timetables or delayed public transport. As rental cars are also pretty affordable, it is, in most cases, cheaper to drive around than to take public buses and trains.
  • Benefit from the many car rental agencies located at Mexico International Airport such as Avis, Europcar, or Hertz. The car rental desks can be found at Terminal 1, even though Terminal 2 also has some service desks available and a shuttle bus operates between the two terminals.
  • Driving in Mexico City can be overwhelming at first, but if taking their time and driving carefully and attentively, drivers will get used to it quickly. Adhering to the lane lines is not as clear as in many US cities and cars may cut into your lane suddenly and without a turn signal, so driving defensively and slowly is important.
  • Avoid Mexico City’s rush hour, as traffic here is among the worst in the country during peak times. Morning rush hour is between 6 and 9 PM and in the evening from 6 to 9 PM, so try driving to your destination outside these times. Driving at night is also not advisable in the city because it can be dangerous, especially in specific areas like Tepito or Doctores. Keep to the main roads when driving, during the day and at night, especially when you are alone in the car.
  • When driving cheap car rentals in Mexico City, look out for speed bumps. These are not your regular speed bumps. They come in unusual sizes and can destroy your muffler. So, be careful and maintain the designated road speed. Moreover, plan your stops since the exits and gas stations are not close. Carry coins that will be useful for buying things along the way or tipping at restaurants and gas stations. When driving car rentals in Mexico City, you will notice that they use kilometres, not miles. Therefore, take note of the speed limit o various roads. Maintain a speed limit of 40km/h in urban areas, 80km/h on open roads, and 100-110km/h on highways.
  • Step away from the metropolitan area and tour the rural regions such as Chiapas, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo with Mexico City cheap car rentals. With a luxury Mexico car rental, you can travel in style to visit natural sites, beaches, and the Mayan ruins. Alternatively, take a road trip around Mexico City. Make your stay easier by learning basic Spanish to help you communicate in restaurants and gas stations. Stopping at checkpoints is common in Mexico City. Several military checkpoints within Mexico City require you to stop and open your car rental for inspection.
  • Mexico City has driving restrictions knowns as the “Hoy no Circula,” which restrict when people can drive according to their license plate number. Therefore, you can ask the car rental company which days your license plate is allowed to operate on the road. Additionally, it would be best if you asked them to explain the specific times you are allowed to drive. This information will prevent you from getting in trouble with the local authorities.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Mexico City for C$ 17 or less
  • Book your rental car in Mexico City at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Mini rental cars in Mexico City are around 70% cheaper than other car types, on average

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Mexico City?

There are no special requirements for driving in Mexico, but a compact car is always a sensible choice in a big city. Always check the posted speed limit and adhere to it, as police are specifically looking out for tourists breaking the road regulations.

When I arrived at the pickup location, they didn't have a car for me and told me they didn't have a reservation for me. So, I had to move all my plans and assume all the additional costs that the inconvenience caused to me. Renting a car in Mexico is a complete mess. The cars are so basic. Police are waiting for you at the exit of the rental car location to fine you for a random reason they will make up. The insurance is extremely expensive. There are so many reason more I don't recommend to rent a car in Mexico.

The rental price was very low, but insurance is quite high. The car was old a bit. Could be more cleaner.
