KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Liberia

  • Renting a car in Liberia, Costa Rica, will help you prioritize flexibility and adventure. The Ponderosa Adventure Park, for instance, is one of the best places to visit in Liberia. Although the park is a couple of miles from the city’s center, you can get there in about 10 minutes to the park with affordable Liberia car rentals. A car rental gives you the freedom to tour as many destinations in Liberia as you want. If you wish to tour La Leona Waterfall or the historic cultural museum, Museo de Guanacaste, cheap car rentals in Liberia will help you travel to various destinations without relying entirely on shuttle buses and other modes of public transportation.
  • Many Liberia car rentals operate in LIR (Liberia Costa Rica Airport). Some of this airport’s reputable car rental agencies include Avis, SIXT, Europcar, and Budget. Therefore, you won’t have to rely on limited public transportation to get to your favorite car rental agency to book your car. At LIR, you will find several rental desks with rental vehicles in the parking lot as you exit the terminal on the far left side of the airport’s main building. You will find cheap car rentals in Liberia that meet your travel needs at the airport.
  • Liberia has unpredictable terrain, and you need to choose the right rental car to navigate the city and its environs. If you are exploring the far-flung, mountainous areas of the area, the best rental car should be a compact vehicle such as 4WD. The city has also sandy coastal areas and you can explore the pristine beaches with an SUV. While traveling with your family, the right choice of a rental car should be a full-size SUV because it can comfortably accommodate five passengers and two bags.
  • While there are shuttle and bus services that bring visitors into the city from the airport or other locations, public transportation within Liberia is limited, making taxis one of the most viable modes of transport. By securing a Liberia car rental, travelers can have the autonomy and flexibility to travel throughout the city without being restricted by ride availability and without having to waste time waiting for a ride to arrive. What’s more, independent vehicles will put off-the-beaten-path locations within reach and will allow travelers to determine arrival and departure times for outings. Coupled with the affordability of rental vehicles in Liberia, the option is also cost-effective.
  • The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport, otherwise referred to as the Liberia Costa Rica Airport (LIR), hosts several car rental kiosks for rental companies, including Enterprise, Budget, Avis, National, Sixt, and Europcar, among others. There are representatives for the companies at the airport, so whether you have a reservation or not, you can usually grab a car rental in Liberia from here. As you’re exiting the terminal, you’ll find rental desks to the far left of the building, with vehicles in the adjacent parking lot.
  • The road systems throughout Costa Rica were updated to include stoplights at several intersections where previously there had only been stop signs, however, in many of these updated locations, the original stop signs were not removed, so the intersection includes both forms of traffic instruction. If you come across such an intersection while driving your car rental in Liberia, you will want to take heed of the traffic light—if the light indicates green, proceed through the intersection without stopping.
  • The months of January through early May tend to be peak tourist season in Liberia since these are the driest months of the year. Travelers can expect roadways to be more congested during these periods, especially given the fact that limited public transportation options encourage visitors to rent personal vehicles. Drivers in rental cars should stay alert on these more crowded roadways, particularly when it comes to buses and 18-wheelers, as they often do not yield to passenger cars—it is recommended to let these types of vehicles pass. Also stay alert for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Liberia for C$ 23 or less
  • Book your rental car in Liberia at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate rental cars in Liberia are around 31% cheaper than other car types, on average

I started with a Corolla auto and ended up with a Toyota Cross. Both are great cars but I prefer the Cross

We drove the Country. Definitely a great experience.

It is best to rent an SUV or 4x4 for getting around the area. Do your research on car rental in Costa Rica as the fees differ from most countries.
julius andreiDec. 2023
Very useful for those who are willing to drive around and explore. If you’re planning to just stay at a hotel or all-Inclusive resort, and occasionally do excursions outside your lodging then it may not be worth renting a vehicle. Transportation to and from the hotels/ resorts are expensive but still cheaper than having to rent a vehicle.
Verified travelerJan. 2024
Driving is always an adventure in Liberia or anywhere in Costa Rica. Parking is very limited at times and road signs/directions are non-existent. Drive carefully and walk as much as possible and your stress level will be lowered tremendously.

Driving in Costa Rica is pretty easy. Just watch out for speed bumps (reductor), and make sure you grab the gas station receipts and look up the charges in your credit card statement later
Verified travelerJan. 2024
Driving in the country was great. Do the research and make sure to have a credit card printout to avoid the price gauging insurance fees. They will not accept American car insurance.
Verified travelerFeb. 2024
We would warn of many roads being incredibly rough and very winding roads with minimal lighting, resulting in the need to travel carefully.

Get Waze to get you around. Most of the time you’re in the middle of no where so get gas when you can

Locals all have coups so you dont need a 4 wheel like the staff suggested. We went with a nissan versa and it was fine on dirt and gravel roads.
MalcolmAug. 2023
Be aware of the speed limit, school zones and “reductors” everywhere. We didn’t see any but police check stops are quite common.
DanielAug. 2023

I would suggest asking how much the insurance and deposit will be. Apparently it is not standard, and ranges GREATLY from place to place

Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

No problem being picked up from Liberia Airport to off-site pickup location . . . It was either a pay an extra $419 for " a 'mandatory' 3rd person collision insurance" or no rental!!!! This was $419 payment for a $147 7-day rental!! The personnel at Payless were were helpful to secure a taxi to Playa del Coco for $60.

It took them 45-60 minutes to check out each guest, were understaffed, and were not communicative about the situation. They were oversold and did not have the car we reserved. After waiting in line for 2 hours we left, went to another agency and had a better car, at the same price, in no more than 15 minutes. Zero stars avoid this place

Borderline scam, and I place about 60% blame on Expedia/carrentals.com/kayak. When I came to pick up the car, the price suddenly doubled due to the “mandatory” liability insurance that was not at all disclosed in any of the previous communications from CarRentals.com or Avis. Moreover, I had to reach out to the (superb) Amex support team to get a letter of coverage (at night in a foreign country) to avoid having to buy optional CDW insurance from Avis as well. Again, this was in no way disclosed at any time between the booking and the pickup. A terrible way to start a great vacation! I recommend looking up an independent car rental company and skipping both Avis and these middlemen.

Used a credit card that has full coverage insurance for 30 days. However once we arrived the agent wanted a letter with our name and card number stating the coverage. Credit card company could not provide the letter in a day therefore we were charged an extra $40 per day for Avis insurance coverage. We witnessed serval people with same problem. We did not have the same problem last year when we booked with another car rental company.

I have rented a car previously in Costa Rica. You have to understand that the price you are going to pay will be more them what you see here. They have a national insurance that is required no matter whether you have coverage on your credit card or your personal insurance. It typically adds $12-$13 additional per day. They also have other insurances that are OPTIONAL. You have to be careful because many unscrupulous rental agencies will try to tack these on additionally. If your credit card or insurance will cover you for renting the car then you need to bring documentation of such and show them to the rental agency. At National, as soon as I showed them this documentation I was able to decline the other VERY EXPENSIVE optional coverages. At some other agencies, this was not quite as easy and I did end up having to pay for some of the additional coverages despite the documentation. Make sure you do your research before you rent a car in Costa Rica. It definitely is different than renting it in the States.

Pros:

The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.

Cons:

We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.

The car was not in amazing shape. But for us, that was totally fine. It got us up some steep hills and winding, rocky Costa Rican roads. Totally had enough power, got us everywhere but not much of a looker :) Certainly not a Toyota Land Cruiser. But completely funcional.

Pros:

The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.

Cons:

Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.

My prepaid insurance through your website was not honored. I had to spend $250 extra just on the insurance. The car was 5 years old and beat up. It had 110000 kilometers on the odometer. 1) My reservation amount was completely different than what they ended up charging me: I had a reservation for 359 usd and they ended up charging me 544. My boyfriend got them down to the right amount. I knew to expect them to add all the extras and I successfully denied insurance by bringing my CC insurance certificate. I have to say that after we went back to complain she was able to reduce the amount to what it was supposed to be. 2) Car flooded: The rental car clearly had a faulty seal near the windshield because when it rained in Costa Rica, water was pouring in at our feet. It continued to drip for a whole week which made driving quite annoying and wet when it shouldn’t have. 3) car made some freaky noises: The car made questionable sounds intermittently. Usually when turning and breaking. Good things: -return was super easy -I liked that they had a sheet to review and sign off on current damage and suggested we video the car. -they did eventually return the extra charges when we ended up catching them. But this delayed our trip but 1.5 h and we ended up driving after sunset

Our connecting flight got delayed and we missed our flight to Costa Rica by a day. Tried calling them directly to let them know that we would be coming in later than expected. No one answered their phones. Upon arrival the next day they had to offer us a new contract because of the date change. This was fine but they were going to charge us more money for less days due to this (150$ USD). We ended up going with another company. Pretty disappointing.

The car was dirty when we picked it up, and had faulty windshield wipers. Also, contrary to what we were told by Europcar when we made the online booking, the Europcar agency in Costa Rica did not honour the insurance we have via our Visa card, even though we provided a letter from the insurance company (Manulife, one of the biggest in Canada). Also, when we made the online booking, Europcar informed us that we needed to purchase an international driver's licence for Costa Rica. That information turned out to be incorrect. Not a good experience with Europcar.

Cost was supposed to be $224.97 for a week, plus I paid about $88 for Allianz insurance when I booked stateside. On arrival at the rental place in Costa Rica I was told the Allianz insurance only covers collision, and I also need liability insurance. Not sure if this is true or a scam, but ended up paying $495 for the week (rental plus cheapest liability insurance option). The car had 74,000 miles. Low pressure light came on on the last day, so i had to have the gas station pump up the tires, though fortunately did not go flat.

Price is incredibly misleading. What I reserved was a week long rental for a SUV. Worse car rental experience ever! After deciding to drop off the car sooner than originally planned, I have visited the office to discuss my refund options and was given a refund breakdown by the front desk person. However, on the day of the return, they gave me a completely different refund amount (HALF of what i was told originally), tried to threaten me, and challenged me to submit a claim with my CC company! After multiple emails back and forth with their "customer service team", they were still unable to provide me with the refund breakdown calculation, and then just ignored my emails all together. I am working through a CC claim at this point. STAY CLEAR, they are obviously struggling, and will rip you off without a second thought.

We booked for $238, when we arrived we were driven to a remote area. We were then shown a beat up van, told it would be another $383 for MANDATORY insurance and ANOTHER $1600 for a refundable deposit! I was told if I wanted to cancel I could, but they couldn’t guarantee I would get my prepaid 2 $238 back. The van had a horrible sound underneath in the axle and could barely drive up the hills on the main highways. The only positive experience, was when I texted the actual owner, he had them bring 2 nice Suzukis to replace it. I was happily surprised with how well the change out went. The first part was VERY stressful, but it all worked out okay. I would say 80% of their fleet is pretty busted though. Just know what you are getting into.

The pick up was not good - very hard to find van, took 30-40 minutes just to get picked up (while many other car rental agency vans came and went). Car itself was not good - over 175k miles, ancient features, no audio, could barely make it up large hills, could not accelerate at all (which is a problem on Costa Rica roads). The best part was the drop off process - that was very quick and easy.

If comfort and safety are of no interest to you then this is your car! Still have a big binder of CDs laying around the house from your teens? Hate back up cameras and automatic transmissions? Think those pesky key fobs are just and inconvenience? This is the car for you! If you would like to double the price for the “mandatory insurance” and get a hold put on your credit card for the entire value of the vehicle, this is the car for you! One positive is that even if you forget something in the car no one is breaking in, because you have the worst car in the lot no matter where you go! Honestly, it’s a shame that kayak recommends places like this. I thought that maybe other rental companies didn’t operate in Costa Rica so this was a good option… turns out all the major car rental companies are there and it doesn’t cost any more than this place. The staff was nice enough, just doing their job… but you can get that most places.

New Chinese car was a piece of junk. The radio would not pickup one single station, phone charging jack didn’t work, car was underpowered for its size, gas economy was approximately 10-12 MPG because you had to give it full throttle most of the time ie: passing, hills .But worst of all price quoted $400 for two weeks but when we picked it up there was an additional $400 in hidden fees. The agent said it was all due to government regulations (who knows as at that point there was no way to check) so it cost us more than a three week rental last year. To say I am dissatisfied would be an understatement!

The vehicle was compact and conducive to very questionable roads throughout our stay in Costa Rica. We were disappointed to find out upon arriving to the area where we were staying that the USB port in the SUV did not work. Since most individuals renting are relying upon their phones for GPS in a foreign country (as was the case for us), we could not have made do without having the ability to charge our phone. As such, it resulted in us buying a power bank that cost us over $80 USD. A functional USB port in any rental is of high priority. In our minds, this should have resulted in a discount after the fact, especially in light of the additional expenditure that resulted for us.

Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745

Cons:

Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. Kindly awaiting your response and the reimbursement of the insurance costs. Best regards

When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!!
