Great experiencePros:The staff are so kind and helpful. We have only had great experiences with Alamo and this was no different. Easy pickup and drop off.Cons:The vehicle was on the older side and had an after market radio which didn't work all that well. Not a big deal thoughReviewed 22 Feb. 2018

Read the fine printPros:Relatively cheap Staff was helpful Upgraded for minimum ($5 a day) chargeCons:I wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).Reviewed 2 Aug. 2017

Rate quoted online is not correct!Pros:The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons:The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.Reviewed 27 Jul. 2017

Don't buy insurance from Kayak!Pros:Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport.Cons:The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.Reviewed 11 May 2017

Pros:Overall experience was good, got the car we requested, all equipment worked wellCons:Pick-up time at the airport going to off-site rental was delayed for quite some time. Also, although price on Kayak was very low, once fees and insurance were added, price was significantly higher.Reviewed 10 Apr. 2017

Pros:Car worked fine and handled the rough roads well.Cons:The pickup took about an hour even though there was no line. Just really slow. The agent told me that I had to buy insurance coverage for liability, which nearly doubled the total price. If he is right that this is required, there should be a clearer warning when the booking is made online. Even with this insurance, the price was good by U.S. standards, but it was an unpleasant surprise upon arrival.Reviewed 13 Feb. 2017

Costa Rica car rentalCons:We reserved a car with Alamo through the Kayak website for our trip to Costa Rica. We flew into Liberia, CR, and we chose Alamo because it stated that the rental was "on site". This was not exactly true. There was an "agent" who directed us to the transportation which took us to the off site rental area. It was only about a 5minute drive, but it was 10pm and we were anxious to get on our way to the resort. We then discovered that the insurance policy that Kayak suggested we purchase (since our US policy does not cover rentals outside the US/Canada) was essentially worthless. We were told, with that policy, if anything happened to the car that we would have to pay up front and then attempt to get the money back from Allianz. We then were convinced to purchase Alamo's policy for considerably more money. They did "upgrade" our vehicle. We will know better on our next trip --- probably cheaper in the long run to pay for transportation rather than rent.Reviewed 29 Jan. 2017

$300 add onPros:Very nice staff and quick shuttle.Cons:There was a mandatory insurance that was not anywhere in the information when I reserved the car. It was $300 extra plus a $2,500 holds on my credit card.Reviewed 29 Jan. 2017
