Surprisingly, right hand driving rules are a bit of a mental exercise for North American drivers but still logical. Take your time and local drivers are very courteous and appear patient.
JessicaApr 2025
It’s an island … sometimes rough roads but Provo TCI is about 15mi across … won’t use a lot of gas and really don’t need much more than the traditional small vehicles available on the Island.
BarbaraMar 2025
Make sure the rental place is very close to airport
Verified travelerDec 2024
The pick up is right at the airport as you walk out and drop off easy when you leave.
steveFeb 2025
Just drive speed of others around, and keep left, just remember to keep left when turning right…useful to have someone in charge of navigation and reminding you to stay on left side of road.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Fuel is expensive but you don't use much as it's a small island. Main roads are paved but the majority aren't so be careful on the bumpy roads

Be aware that the lowest base rate is for a two passenger vehicle. If you have any luggage, you will never be able to carry four passengers, which will require an upgrade and additional costs. Also, the offsite vehicle lot for Thrifty and Hertz requires more time than similar companies functioning primarily at the airport.
TashaDec 2023
Staying to the left, you will be driving on the opposite side of the street. There are no traffic lights, just “round bouts”/traffic circles where you must “give way”/ yield. Gas is expensive but you will get great gas mileage and the island isn’t that big. There are lots of dogs so make sure you keep an eye out, especially at night.
SteveJan 2024
Plan for extra time when dropping off the car. Car gauges where in metric and Japanese while posted speeds are in miles per hour so go with the flow of traffic.
Verified travelerJan 2024
They drive on the left so must be careful with Right turns crossing traffic and no stop light just roundabouts that are good at keeping traffic moving.
Verified travelerDec 2023
Driving was fine. Had to get used to driving on the left side. It was quite busy given high season is just beginning.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Providenciales

  • Whether traveling alone or as a group, Providenciales car rentals have a suitable model for nearly everyone, allowing you to take in different attractions in the town, including the Northwest Point National Park, with bird watching and snorkeling activities. Providenciales also offers beautiful beach experiences, such as Grace Bay Beach, located around 8 miles from the town. Rent a van and take your companions on a relaxing ride along the long and winding Venetian Road with scenic surroundings. The small-sized Providenciales town does not have public transportation, making navigation with a car rental convenient and saves some expenses that you otherwise would spend on costly taxis.
  • When traveling to Providenciales, you can easily find various car rentals at the Providenciales International Airport terminal, including Avis, Payless, Sixt, and Europcar. Their counters are located in the baggage claim area. Other Providenciales car rentals offer complimentary shuttle services to their offices, such as Budget, Hertz, and Thrifty, transporting you from the terminal to the pickup station. You can find this shuttle service just outside the terminal building.
  • Providenciales’ Leeward Highway is its main expressway, featuring two travel lanes in both directions. With no public transport, locals and tourists travel around the city via taxis and rented vehicles along this carriageway that spans about 5.5 miles from downtown to the Long Bay area, making it one of the busiest road systems in the area. Be alert because the road doesn’t have many traffic circles, which can consistently regulate speeds. It’s essential to note that the city follows the UK Highway Code by driving on the left, but has the speed limit signs posted in miles per hour. Be mindful that some car models come from the Japanese market and feature speedometers marked in kilometers per hour. The city also imports most vehicles from Florida, which come with left-hand drive systems, so pick your vehicle according to your comfort when driving.
  • Generally, traffic is manageable in the city, with the evening rush hour at approximately 5pm. Stay away from the Leeward Highway at this time and wait to start your journey at around 8pm. This city has a convenient climate that makes it an ideal destination when you want to get away from the frosty winter conditions at home. The average Providenciales weather ranges from around 73°F to 90°F, making the conditions great for driving at nearly any time of the year.
  • The streets in Providenciales lack traffic lights, which isn’t common for many cities. However, there are lots of roundabouts and left first priority for drivers. Therefore, remember that cars move clockwise on the roundabouts when driving your rental car. This means you'll find many vehicles with roundabout priority before you. Thus, you need patience when driving on Providenciales streets because of the oncoming traffic in roundabouts. Again, it's tricky when entering two-lane roads because roads seem straight through the intersections. Thus, research these streets before renting from cheap car rentals in Providenciales.
  • Driving a rental gives you the freedom to visit iconic places in the city, following your fixed schedule. One of the best places to visit is Taylor Bay Beach, located 5 miles (8km) and a 10-minutedrive from the city center. As you navigate the city, you can explore other beaches, including Malcom's Road Beach, located 10.9 miles (17.5)km from the city. It takes you about 20min when driving via Millennium Hwy. Anna’s Art Gallery is 8.3 miles (13.3)km and a 15-minute drive from the city center via Leeward Hwy. However, a public bus takes about 30min to cover this distance.
  • Drunk driving is illegal in Providenciales. When driving within the city, you’ll notice several local law enforcers with breathalyzers beside the road. Your alcohol blood concentration should be less than 0.08. DUI state laws in the city state that if you're guilty of drunk driving, you pay a fine of $5000 or face a 12 months imprisonment or both. Again, you may be disqualified from holding your driver's license for not less than a year. Thus, research new DUI laws of the city before booking cheap car rentals in Providenciales to avoid penalties, hefty fines and imprisonment. You can also ask about DUI laws when booking with Providenciales car rentals.

I recently rented a car from Thrifty/Hertz, and unfortunately, the experience was far from what I expected. The vehicle I was given was at least 12 years old, underpowered, and felt like it was on the verge of falling apart. It drove poorly and didn't give any sense of reliability or comfort—definitely not the quality I expected from a rental. The check-in and return process were frustratingly slow. You had to be very proactive just to get someone's attention, and it felt like they weren't very organised or attentive to customers' needs (perhaps understaffed for the # clients?). To top it off, I had to take a shuttle ride to the airport, which added more time and inconvenience to the process. On top of the issues with the car and service, there were multiple deposit charges placed on my credit card at the time of rental. These were for a vehicle that might be worth around $1,500, which felt excessive considering the condition of the car. I won't be returning to this rental company in the future and will definitely try a different option next time. It was an overall disappointing experience and I would rather pay 50-100 more to have that better experience.

extremely poor. will never use this company again. Reserved midsize vehicle to accommodate 5 people and 2 luggage’s, they brought me this vehicle that can hardly fit 2 people for the midsize vehicle. Had to upgrade to a larger vehicle which in the web description would qualify for midsize vehicle for substantial more money. The pick up and drop off is a nightmare. Small office for a lot a people. I had to leave my family outside in a 100 degree heat.

The only negative would be the pick up/ drop off system they have. Its all manually done, lots of paperwork. Not a problem when there are not many customers, but really a pain when the there is a line out the door of people waiting to pick up or return. Automation would be awesome! Otherwise the folks were friendly and helpful.

This was the worst rental experience we have ever had. The vehicle we were given was not large enough for 6 adults, a child and numerous pieces of luggage. Child car seats were sub-standard. Quite frankly, it was a rip off. We will never use Payless again as a result, and will be sure to share our experience on social media to warn others.

The vans were perfect and affordable for our large party. They accommodated both our people and our luggage., and the drove. The rentals were a little worn but we were on island where everything is imported , so they don’t just have new shipments of cars hanging around. The rental was affordable , however the credit car hold cost more than the car. They did disclose this information so it wasn’t a surprise. The staff was patient, pleasant and weren’t pushy. The rental location was right down the street from the airport so it was ideal for returning. When returning, give yourself a little extra time for them to process your paperwork and get you back to the airport. Remember you’re on a relaxing island, no one is in a rush.

Absolutely appalling. Several emails from budget saying we will be met at the airport when we landed at 5:30 p.m. In fact we arrived early, but by 6:30 p.m. nobody was there to meet us. A local kindly telephone the budget emergency to be told the office is closed and even if it was an emergency nothing could be done until the following day. Called a taxi to our destination and the following day went into the office to be told it closes at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday and the closing time and the emails we received were all wrong. Very surly, totally disinterested member of staff who obviously thought it was unreasonable of me to complain. The car they gave me was very old, rundown and I would say registered in the 1990s. It broke down on the second day and I had to wait several hours for a replacement. I am a RapidRes member, and if they treat me like this, how on earth do they treat a normal member of the public? I recommend booking with a different company
