Detroit Foundation Hotel

Detroit has been experiencing a renaissance in recent times, and this particular hotel has played an important role in helping to get the city back on its feet. Placing great emphasis on the local community, the hotel functions as a space where people can get together – either literally, through special events and podcast recordings, or metaphorically, through the many local partnerships it has created. From candles and chocolates in the room to the hotel’s architecture and staff uniforms, the Detroit Foundation Hotel is a coming together of the city’s most exciting artisans and craftspeople.

As a hotbed of culture in the city, there’s always something going on at the Detroit Foundation Hotel. Guests can book to take part in a wide range of events such as the regularly scheduled jazz brunches or pop-up dining events catered by celebrity chef Thomas Lents. There are also one-off occasions such as e-bike scavenger hunts around the city, wellness workshops and cocktail masterclasses.

The main restaurant at the hotel is The Apparatus Room, which is open daily from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm (9:00 pm on Sundays). Traditional American breakfasts are joined by an extensive weekend brunch menu, a range of salads, sandwiches and desserts at lunchtime, and an evening menu that features locally sourced ingredients accompanied by a range of fine wines and beers. It’s also possible to enjoy creative cocktails and light snacks here during the afternoon and evening. For something a little more up-market, try the unique Chef’s Table venue: an intimate, multi-course dining experience held at a communal table.

The hotel is always looking to give its guests the best possible experience of Detroit, which is why it arranges several add-on experiences. While these vary according to the season, examples include a bespoke denim jeans or suit fitting at one of their local partner tailors – enjoy private transport to and from your fitting, plus a glass of complimentary whiskey – or a tour and tasting at the city distillery. Another option that can be arranged to suit your needs is a private dining event in one of the hotel’s dinner rooms – chef Thomas Lents will whip up a delicious feast to surprise you and your guests’ taste buds.

If you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion at the hotel, you can choose from a range of carefully curated in-room amenities to help surprise a loved one. Options include a chilled bottle of bubbly, chef’s dessert delivered to your room, a fresh juice in the morning or two house cocktails in the bar.

Depending on the traffic, the journey from the airport to the hotel will take around 20 to 25m by car. Rental cars, rideshare services and prearranged shuttles are all available, as well as standard metered taxicabs – expect to pay around $50 for the trip. It’s also possible to get to downtown Detroit by SMART bus, with an estimated journey time of 1h: route 261 stops around a block away from the hotel.(Prices checked 17/05/19).
