The San Remo Hotel is an ideal choice for the traveler eager to experience the authentic San Francisco atmosphere. Just a short distance from Fisherman’s Wharf, it is part of the North Beach neighborhood known for old-world buildings and Victorian architecture. It is also where some of the country’s most famous and oldest Italian restaurants remain, and so it is a good accommodation for the foodies of the world in addition to business or leisure travelers.

Not far from Ghirardelli Square, with its premium boutiques and chocolate shops, and steps from a cable car stop, it is a good place to begin an exploration of the city. Union Square is just one block from the hotel’s front door! However, that is not to say that the hotel is without an array of luxuries and comforts of its own. Decorated with lots of historic items and antiques, it offers concierge services, free Wi-Fi, coin-op laundry, parking (for a fee), tour and ticket help, and a cozy bar and lounge in the lobby area.

The rooms are like stepping back in time as most are beautifully decorated in the Old West style of early San Francisco. The hotel was built in 1906 and retains much of that historic charm and esthetic. The rooms are available as double, triple, single or family-sized. Where they differ from other properties is in their classic “pensione” design. This means that the rooms are well-appointed but share a bath with others on the floor. Most feature a sink in the bedroom area. There is also the coveted penthouse with its rooftop views of some of the city’s most famous sights.

With a perfect location and old world charms, the San Remo Hotel is a good choice for visitors to San Francisco.

10.0 Wonderful
Pros:Walking distance from every thing
Cons:not much
A
8.8 Very good
Pros:The San Remo is a charming little place that offers all a single traveler needs. (Though two people could stay in a room, depending on how well they like one another). They offered more amenities than I expected, including mouthwash, earplugs, and bath salts (did not use those, though).
Cons:It was a little strange to have a window in my room that looked out on the hallway, though it was useful since the room got a bit stuffy with it closed. The mornings were a little loud with everyone waking up and using the bathrooms and showers, even with that window closed (hence the earplugs, I suppose).

10.0 Wonderful
Pros:A little bit of Europe in San Francisco. Very historic and nostalgic. It's not for everyone but it's perfect for people who like to meet strangers on their travels.
Cons:The lack of air conditioning...but that's what you expect for such an old building.
D
7.7 Good
Pros:The price and what you get for it.
Cons:The rooms were too cramped
A
8.0 Very good
Pros:Good location near Fisherman's Warf. Low price. Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. 100 year old hotel. Per other reviews I requested a room with a sink. This allowed me to brush my teeth, shave, and have drinking water without leaving the room. Others had to do so in the hallway shared sink. Imagine what a low rent hotel was like 100 years ago, and you will be fine.
Cons:Thin walls, older mattress and bedding and furnishings. Small, but to be expected. Shared bathrooms and showers were not ideal, but not a big deal for a quick one night stay.
A
4.0 Mediocre
Cons:We could barely fit in our room because it was so small. We were the first room across from the bathroom and could hear every time someone went pee. Like literally hear them pee. The lightbulb flickered and a curtain blind fell off. The bed was uncomfortable and room was so tiny.
A
8.5 Very good
Pros:Was a little worried about the bathrooms being down the hall. However, this was no problem at all. Had to wait a time or two for a shower, but was extremely pleased with how clean the shared areas were maintained.
Cons:Of course, would have preferred our own bathroom.
S
8.2 Very good
Pros:The vintage and historic feel of the hotel. there's an almost communal hostel-like atmosphere to the hotel due to the nature of amenities such as shared bathrooms and washroom. Interior is incredibly beautiful.
Cons:Parking was a pain but that's an issue you'll encounter with many places in SF. gotta be careful with noise levels since you can hear things and sound can easily penetrate through walls and windows.

8.8 Very good
Pros:Clean and very quaint. Friendly staff. The location was great, near the wharf and cruise terminal. Had coffee and tea available near the front desk. Was excellent for the price we paid!
Cons:The rooms were very small. Had to put the chair on top of the wardrobe so we could both put our suitcases on the floor.

9.1 Wonderful
Pros:I liked the atmosphere, and the fact that for a shared-bathroom facility there were multiple baths and toilets available. I also LOVED the location and the general 'feel' of the place.
Cons:the room was just so incredibly TINY! barely had room to move around the bed, which would not have been so bad if there were at least some sort of desk or table to sit at, or a lounge area in the hotel that had a table and chairs (there were several couch-type areas but nothing that could double as a desk). I was travelling for work, and could not really do much at all at the hotel. also this was listed as a double room... I cannot imagine sharing this room with someone else.
